its a big bird with 2 wings and some extra bulk and drag, 100 to 120cc twin makes it shine

I beg to differ! the 85 flies this plane with authority! (maybe NOT DA 120 authority ) . I've seen them fly side-by-side, one with a DA 100 and one with a DA 85 and the performance was very similar.

Unless you are competing at a high level in Freestyle, you will not be disappointed with the 85.

I've got a DA 120 on mine, and I am thinking of replacing it with a DA 100 I have lying around, as I would rather have the extra power of the 120 in a mono-wing 3D monster like the NEW PAU Edge 540T!

Have you seen one with an 85 fly the Advanced or Unlimited sequences? Lots of upline rolling elements that are power hungry. 26 to 29 lbs of draggy biplane on an 85 is alot to ask.

You may be right on the upper classes of IMAC....

Have you seen one fly? On an 85? in the upper classes of IMAC? Or are you just generalizing?

Doesn't look like it is hurting for power on this video! Check the pull out of the hover/torque roll!

Astro, this is based on 13+ years of flying IMAC. I have flown and seen lots of airplanes at the same weight and power. The Upper classes are power hungry and are only getting more so. This is why engines are getting bigger. The 35% guys are now going to 120cc, the 40% guys are now going to 170cc and bigger. The airplanes are pretty much the same size. I've seen 43 lb 150 powered airplanes 3D well but are inconsistant on an upline containing multiple snap elements. The airplane looses too much speed after the first element and the second is a slower rotation because of lack of airspeed. End result is a loss of points. Don't get me wrong, I think for most people it would be a great combo, just not one that would shine in situations that require lots of power.

So you were just generalizing......

It's great that you have 13+ years of IMAC experience! You are in a 3D forum.......

OP never mentioned flying it in IMAC.......

Astro

Astro, the top of my page says 3D and aerobatics. Last I checked IMAC was aerobatics. 13 years of IMAC and 35 years of R/C flying is more then a generalization. Sorry if my experienced opinion ruffles your feathers but I will keep it just the same.

I'm not ruffled at all. It's all good. I just was hoping that you would qualify if you had first-hand knowledge with the actual airplane in question or if you're statements were about biplanes in general.

rcpete347: I hope the video answered all your questions!

Regards,

Astro

That is a realy good video of an older design for sure. It has obviously been recovered from stock, and am willing to bet $$ that some lighting methods were used at the same time. There is room for a diet on it.
For most, building stock and porking it up with too many electronics like most people do, the 85cc is likely marginal.

just went on PAU site, this is the new covered version, its really nice, my comments were based on the old version that has been around for many years.
The new one may just do fine on the 85cc, the old one was 650$ [X(] the new one is 1100$

Yes, those were the days!!! The PAU 100cc Ultimate at $650.00 was one of the best deals ever!!

The NEW PAU Ultimate is lighter and has included some design features not found on the blue/silver/red version of years ago.

I just went and did some checking and it seems that the PAU Ultimate is $100 cheaper than Aeroworks' and $150.00 cheaper than H9's 100cc biplane offering! There are not many top-shelf ARF manufacturers that even offer a 3D-capable Ultimate, so it was hard to find too many comparisons!

All I know, is that I LOVE mine, and I wish gasoline cost $1.00/gal. again! [X(]

Astro
