Does anyone have a construction guide and materials list for the Ultra Hots? I have a set of plans and a brief extremely poor copy of the original review in MAN magazine. Thanks for any help....Johnny

I built a BIG HOTS from plans.
I have a good copy of the MAN article on it and can make it available if you want.

I built this last year. Same article you have. I used a foam core wing to save time. Go to <dbalsa.com> they have a list of foam core wings that they sell.

I love the way this airplane flies. I use a Saito 180 for power.

Have fun with yours.

Big Hots was featured on MAN November 1986, page 16-20.

Thanks for the information. I may also go with the foam wing instead of the built up version. I always wanted to build one since it came out......just never got around to it....Thanks Johnny

Hey Sigflyer, I have a new fiberglass cowl for the Ultra Hotts I want to sell. You can have it for $30.00 mailed to your door. Paypal OK. Let me know if you are interested.

Hi, tonyc.
How does your lady fly with the 180? The reason for asking is that I get a US 41, and a G- 62. Is the 41 strong enough?

Is a 40 mm alu tube strong enough for joining a Big Hots wing?
I wanna build the wing in two pieces for easier transport.

Default Saito 180 switched for Moki 2.10

I set mine up with split ailerons, and 4 servos in the wing. I followed the Hanger 9 program guide for their Ultra Stick. With the Saito 180 and an APC 18/6 wide prop the vertical was unlimited and the Hots had very stable 3D ability. This is a perfect combination for the Ultra Hots.

As a side note. I traded the Saito 180 for a Moki 2.10. Not because the Saito wasn’t a great motor, it is, but because I like to build scale and my next project needed a little more motor.

So I added a little more weight and more horsepower. So what is the difference? Well I like the Saito better. With the Saito my take off was about 6 feet and straight up from there. The Moki will give me unlimited vertical but I need a take off roll that is much longer. To be fair, I do not have the Moki broken in yet. I don’t think the prop is correct. I think when it is broken in it will be a wild combination.

The only point I was trying to make is that the Hots flew great with the added weight. The Moki is off about 1000 rpm from where it should be so the motor seams a little weak. But the Hots can take a heavier motor without a problem. Landing is still as slow as you dare to go.

This is one fine airplane.

The Ultra Hots does need the heaver motors for balance. I have a Super Tiger 2500 in mine and it balances out well. A Super Tiger 3250 would be a great motor also. I had one with a G-45 on board and one with a G-38 also. The one that had the G-38 crashed due to radio problems. The Ultra Hots with the G-45 is still flying with unlimited verticle. A friend has that one now. I plan on building another one and putting my Super Tiger 3000 in it.

Default Ultra Hots.

Mine is the Ultra hots. I used the foam wing from dbalsa.com. I did cut the wings down to 80 inches. Works fine.

I now have a Moki 210 on this Hots.

Have the Ultra and the Big Hots the same wing profile, and is the body almost the same, exept for the size?
I`m building the Big one, but I have a US 41, and why not put it in a Ultra. I haven`t the plans for the Ultra, but I guess it`s aviable somewhere.

All the Hots have the same profile, and if you are cutting your own wing ribs then you can shrink or enlarge as you want and the Hots will fly GREAT. They all do.

I made my fuse just a tad longer for balance and made the wing just a tad wider but a little shorter. Small changes to the plans will not have much effect on this airplane, its a classic design and you will like the way it flies.

enjoy

I have moved main wing 1 1/2 inch aft on my Big one. This because of some worry about the balance of the Lady. If she`s gonna be nose heavy, i will bolt rudder/ aileron servos in her tail.(Don`t tell this to Russman) If my calculations is right, she will come up with 14-16 pounds with a G-62. What`s the weight of your Ultra? ( Forgive me if some words come up wrong. I`m more comfortable with norwegian)

Cbastian,

Just got back home. Will mail you the plans with the modification to make it with two wing panels.

Don't move the wing, you don't need it to use the G-62.
Mine balanced right on the CG.

One thing you may want to do is add a few sheer webs to the built up wing. My plans and instructions for the Ultra Hots never ask for them. I don't know if they are "realy important", but I added them on my last two and the wing flex was almost non existent compared to not using them. If you use a glow motor you can get by with a 1/4 inch firewall instead of 1/2 inch and save a little weight. I also put some lightening holes in the fuse doubler and floor. I also put the elevator servos in the tail.

What is the wing area for this airplane? (Ultra Hots)
Does it have a two-piece wing?

Looking for a low wing loading areobat / fun fly project. [sm=cool.gif]
Abell web page quotes a 11-14lb flying weight. This could be the one.

I ordered the "Ultra Hots" short kit from Abell RC, as well as the landing Gear, Cowl, and Tail Wheel. I will let everyone know how the kit looks when I get it.

Also, I plan to use a G62 up front and build the wing in 2 sections for easier transport. If anyone has any info on using a wing tube to connnect the 2 halves, I would surely appreciate it.

Mike.
I am building an Ultra Hots with Two wing halves, using a alu- tube Ø 40 X 620 mm. You don`t need more than Ø 32 mm, but I would get one that is some longer than mine, just in case.
I have done some modifications on my Ultra. She has been a little wider, and some lower in front deck. This because that I want the engine to get inside of cowling sides ( US engines 41 ) I have done some other small modifications. Mostly for fun ( and more job ). She will come out with a weight about 5,5 - 6 kg. I guess she will be airborn in a month from now.
