Default CA 31 %/34 % Build

Well...

Started on the kit today. Fuse went together pretty well. This is going to be a nice plane.

Pictures will follow.

Pugs, You really going to build this thing? I have ordered the 34% and should have it the first of next week. I needed something to do over the winter! Anyway what motor are you planning on running? And get the pics! I think the 31, and 34 build exactly the same. So maybe we can bounce questions off each other?

SLOW DOWN Cap he doesn't have it finished yet. As for your 34% going to be a winter project. That will last about a month then what you going to do with the rest of your winter. I know the cold lasts longer than a month over there.

Enjoy the CA's you will not be disappointed

Cap,

Yeah. I have to finish it. Now that I am unemployed, well sort of, I have to make due with what I have. Can't go buying all of Wayne's planes.

So far this thing is a POC to build. My son stopped by the shop and asked when I got the "3D puzzle" to build. The laser cutting is very nice in the kit. And Chris is right, other than covering, this thing will build quick. You may need another project to last all winter.

I plan on using a ZDZ 80 with a header and RCS can. If I can keep it around 19-20 lbs, which from the looks of other builds on RCU is very do-able, then it should be really killer. The ZDZ 80 will live first in my new Wild Hare Giles that I ordered last night.

So far the only things I need to replace from the Extra kit are, the landing gear (midgets must have designed them), wheel pants (what a joke! These things are crap), and I'd love a new cowl. One a bit more heavy duty.

Okay all you CA builders, now is the time to chime in and tell me what you would have done different during your builds!

Thanks,

Let me tell you what I did different then you. I finished mine. LOL. No really I added counter balances to my elevators and used bolts in the fuse for the wing, changed the hatch to my own liking. Other than that there is nothing needed to changed.

How do the stabs mount. Do they have the bolts that go through the stab into the tube? If so I think I will make lit ply end plates with tabs for two 4-40 bolts into the fuse. Is this possible, or is there something I can't see that would hinder this method?

Oh and I have 5 bucks that says he won't finish, and fly this! Any takers?

Oh and how big should the counter balances be? Is there any advantages to having the "half" counter balances like on the GP 1/3 extra?

Mine came in tonight! Yeah!!!!! I have already about framed the fuse, but I haven't glued anything yet. Anyone have any construction pics, of the 34%?

I had the 27% kit, but never finished it. When it arrived it had severe "handling" damage, but this one is in great shape. I will get some pics sometime soon.

cap

Check out the other 31% thread here in the giant scale forum for pics of how I mounted my stabs, new plywood root rib and 2 10-24 nylon bolts into fuse.

Hey Pug's, You still in Indy? Yes i still have the Edge 540 and Jeff is keeping it here since i have more room!!!!! HE HE HE HE. Just might finish it!!!!
Hey Brian, When you going to be up this way again? Se ya soon.
As to the kit, I added balance tabs to the elevators and changed the cockpit hatch a little.
The stabs ARE held on with 2 4-40 screws like your idea! Works great!
What i would do differnet is the root rib for the wings would be solid and a anchor block added for a bolt retaining method.
I differed from the kit on the control surface facing also. Its double beveled and its with 1/2" on wings then the supplied wood for elevators. A 1/8" ply fin post was added then the balsa for beveling for the fin. I figured this would help and also do away with any need for wires or question it.
I just recovered from a hard drive crash and i will post a link for pictures within a week if your interested. My wings are ready to cover and the fuse is ready for radio install then covering. Just haven't hit on that one of kind eye catching scheme yet. I do know it will have cub yellow, purple metallic, then red and gray as an accent.

Sam, sent you an email. I have questions about the doublers, that are only on the 34, and the 38. They are not shown in the instructions. The instructions I have must be building the 31%.

19-20 lbs won't happen, especially using a can....21 is more realistic....19 lbs is doable for a few hundred$ extra,,,CF tubes, gear, etc....

Here is a pic of the doublers that I think go here. The instructions don't say anything about them but I can't see where else they would fit. Its the one the clamp is holding.

Here is the fuse after about two hours work. No glue yet! I will have to get it all aligned before I glue anything. So far so good.

That is what mine looks like....

Not a big fan of the splice in the fuse sides....

Cap, any thoughts on this?

I think the fuse splice is fine. I don't see any problems with it. If your concerned a small peice of 1/8 lite ply over the splice would make it stronger for hardly any weight gain. I am just going to leve mine as is.

You have those doublers, in the engine box, that my clamp is holding as well?

OK, Brain, Looks like you have it right on the money. Those doublers weren't in my early kit. Dates to year ago sept. As you might have noticed, the tabs on the gussets (27) are for a 1/4" thickness. Then they form a little lip for the top of the motor box.
Why they added these i would like to hear. Its still not to late too ad them to mine.
One important thing i forgot to mention, THE GEAR!!!! If the kit still comes with the "grass cutting" low stance, order a set from TNT for more prop cleareance. I feel that they are a must. More scale looking also!!!!
Hey Pugs!!! I wish i was farther south and staying warmer, aka more flying!!!!!!!!!
I should be posting some pics of mine thursday here, so subscribe to this thread and keep updated.
Later
Sam
