RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
I am glad to see the covering started. I am not that far yet, but since Christmas Eve, I have 4 planes ready to fly which weren't ready to fly beforehand. Looks nice man!

RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
To those who have been following this thread, got some more work done it. Engine box is finally all finished up, engine ready to be mounted for hopefully the last time, I've managed to find a canopy for a reasonable price, but not sure how if I can make it work or not. I may end up returning it yet.
Anyways, here's a link to my new website, I've got all the picutesd on there from the rebuild as well as some other stuff. Mind you it is under construction yet, so give it time and the rest of the website will get populated.

RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
Well,
Just got back to work on the wings. Over the years and I'm guessing that after a few mishaps, some of the sheet has seperated from the cores. If they sit in my shop for a few days, where the moisture is higher than normal this time of year, the sheeting swells just enough that it bubbles up. To try to fix this without stripping the sheeting, I'm injecting glue under the sheeting trying to get it between it and the foam. Let me tell you that this is not near as fun as it sounds [8D] I've quite a bit to fix, I'll upload some pics soon and give you a staus report so that those of you who are following the thread can see how well it did or didn't work.
Neo.

RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
got the installation of the engine done. Here's a few quick pics of where I stand. Had to put the servo on the firewall becasue of the layout inside the fuse. I need to put a heat shield over the servo to protect it, but other than that....all is good. Work has now resumed on the wings to get those repaired.

Here's one more pic of the removeable plate that has the throttle servo on it. Following are the pics from my repair on the wings. I've never come across a post on repairing foam core wings, and since this is my first attempt, I figured that I would share it. After cutting the break nice and square, I used Probond to glue in a block of foam. After that I just started cutting away at the block with a hack saw blade. I just kept making passes to get to the point that it's at now. After a few more it should be even with the sheeting.....then I'll go in with a sanding block to finish that last little bit off. To be truthful I was always a little afraid of working with foam, but it's proven to be easier than I thought. Enough yakkin, here's the pics.

I'll agree with that. I'm fortunate enough to live 5 minutes from work. So, I go home, grab a quick bite and work on the plane at times. we'll, lets just say work clothes + static charge = vaccum sweeper in order to go back to work. I literally had to sweep myself off to get rid of all the foam.

ummmmmmmm......................at least I'm the happy one!!!!!!!!! lol
On with the wing repair..................As you can see I have all the foam shaped in the wingtip...........I love how easy this stuff is to work with. Of course when I go to find some wood for the leading edge.............I'm out. Grrrrrrrrrr..................off to the hobby shop tomorrow.

RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
Neo,
I was wondering if you happened to have any info on the 3w 160 b4 I read somewhere that it had less power than the 150 twin. Do you know if there is any truth to that? In addition sounds like you are installing it on a plane that was originally suited for a 150 twin any comments. I am planning a 40% carden project in the near future and was unable to come across any info on the B4. By the way the plane looks great keep the pics coming!!

RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
Thanks for the compliment. Even though I haven't run mine, here is what I've been able to put together. The power is the same. It'll swing the same size prop that any 150 will. Not sure on the RPM's, but a lot if that is how well you can dial in the dual carbs. The one gain you have over a 150 is the torque. It should also spool up faster because you no longer fire every 360 degrees, your now firing every 180. So, in all the power is about the same, you take a major weight penalty though. I'm not to worried about it, I'm shooting to come in at 35 lbs anyway. My 160 weighs in at 12 lbs bare compared to 7.5 lbs bare for a new 150. But the giles has a short nose on it and the weight is needed, so why not put it in the engine....lol..........it's unique anyway. But imagine, I could bring this bird in at just over 30lbs if I went with a new 150.......hmmmmm...........I've got some newer pics, I'll post them soon. I've got one wing done, the other should be done soon, then to cover them. Soon as that is done time to test run that engine. Them I'll actually have some RPM readings and such. I've got one of the new Airwild NX Pro props just waiting to be put on. Gerhard recommended I start with a 32x10 and make any adjustments from there if needed. I'm excited, can't wait to get it fired up.

RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
Ok, the wing repair went well, I now have that one finished sanded and ready to cover, I'm currently working on the second one. I've also been messing with my busted up cowl a bit. I got it all glued back together, and have hit it with the first round of sanding and bondo. It's nearly as smooth as a baby's bottom. In the pictures that show the pink, those were the low spots that were in need of filling. There is a lot of work left in it though. I need to hit it with 400 grit, prime it again, lightly sand to get ultra smooth, then start applying the final paint. Here's a few pics of what I've been doing.

RE: 46% Giles Rebuild progress
After examining the wings a little bit more, I come to find there are no rails installed into the cores to mount the servo's to. Just a small 1"x1/8" block of wood glued under the sheeting to hold the servo's. Needless to say I did a little bit of surgery. I cut slots into the cores for rails and now it's time to re-sheet. Just another good reason to go through a plane throughly when you weren't the original builder. The pics below spell it out.
