Mr. Gary Wright flew this Extra at his club's E-Fly in in Melborne, FLA.

I started the plane back in July and finished the conversion in December.

It is powered by two Hacker Brushless motors and swings a 30 x 18 prop at 4070 rpms.

It's weight is very comparable to it's Gas counterpart and seems to be in the same thrust range as well.

Flight times are a variable, but range between 15 and 20 minutes, depending on who is flying it...

April's Quiet Flyer Magazine will have a extensive article on the conversion.

~notice the air condition vent in the bottom of the fuse for airflow!

Gear box would have to be commercially available. Finding large props in this pitch range is next to impossible. These are the two main problems I see for anyone wanting to do this. I do like it!!

Rob,
Looks awsome. What's the deal on the batteries? What is the weight comparison between the motors, gearbox and batt's vs a DA-100? I imagine a prop at 4000rpm would require a different profile rather then one for a gasser. Good luck!

Rick,

thanks for all your help during the project...

the plane takes off out of your arms when we try a verticle test.. it probably has a 1.5 :1 thrust ratio

speed wise, the plane's prop speed is around 75 mph..

the power plant weighs 10 pounds ready to go..

compare this to a da? not sure about total all up weights of a gas motor.. be sure to add the gas weight to the DA numbers.. and then take a pound of receiver batteries out of the electric version's all up weight..

overall weight wise, this plane came out heavy due to lots of paint, I think it would be close to the same, maybe even a little lighter, than it's gas counterpart.

here is a video of one of the first flights. Gary is flying the plane SEDATE since it is one of the first flights.

Very cool! I can't wait untill we start seeing the newer generation Li Poly's and some new brushless motors come out with more power[8D]

We missed Gary at Deland's Winter Festival of Giants this year. Wish he would have brought it over!

The new Li Poly technology coming out at the end of this month from Thunderpower should blow away previous Li Poly packs of all sorts. They have 200,4000,6000, and 8000 mah packs capable of continuos 10C discharge and up to 20c bursts! That being test and from thunderpower says a lot. I cant wait to try a new pack in my little foamy

Well a standard 2.6M Composite ARF weighs 25-26lbs so I would say that plane would be real tipsy at low speed.

I think your exagerating a little. I know he said the plane came out on the heavy side, but I also don't belive the paint added 5 lbs. I'm sure the batteries had something to do with it

the paint weighs between 4-1/2 and 5 pounds. It is certainly nothing to exaggerate about..I certainly did not know this was going to be the case before having it done.. As a measure, if someone can weigh their wing without paint, mine weights right over 4 pounds.. (each wing).. before painting and before servos it weighed 2 1/4 pounds.

so almost a pound and a half of paint on each wing!

Otherwise, this plane could easily come out the same weight as the gas version.. and it has 47 pounds of thrust.

batteries are 6 pounds, motor is 5 pounds no receiver battery or throttle servo

It doesn't fly heavy at all. In fact, it flies awesome. it stalls straight, and slows down amazingly for slow landings. Gary said it was faster than the gas versions he has flown.

and the weights of 26 pounds + 3 pounds of fuel + any smoke system is not far off anyways

Rick,

books a million should have it..
