New Aeroworks 27% Ultimate!
Look what I got!!
It's a pre-production unit from Aeroworks.
For those of you attending the Toledo show in April, look for it, along with the Katana's, at the Aeroworks booth.
I've only spent enough time with it to unbox it and take pictures....but from what I've seen so far, very impressive!

RE: New Aeroworks 27% Ultimate!
Looks fabulous, but I wonder at that wing loading, as well. Since they mention airfolied tail surfaces, I wonder it they include those with the 1420 sq in. listing. At 63" span, with about 11.5" chord, is gives me 1449 sq. in., so that's ok, though a bit 'fat' at a 5/1 aspect ratio. That's ignoring the tail volume. The scale Ultimate is around 6/1, but this model still looks great. At 14 lbs, that gives me a wing loading right at 22 oz/sq ft., which again is pretty good. Not feather light, but ok. Of course, a 50cc will pull it all over the place with no problem. It should land with little issue too, if the right airfoil has been used.
Looks like a winner to me. Looks really great. This must be the year of the 50cc aerobatic planes....

RE: New Aeroworks 27% Ultimate!
Yes, the red biplane is the 42%...one of a few at our field. Awesome planes!!
I'm not sure about the BME 44 in this....it would fly it, but it probably wouldn't 3D. Aeroworks recommends a 50-60cc engine for this.
I plan on using a DA-50. The first prototype had a Brison 3.2. A lighter motor is obviously better here.
As far as wing-loading is concerned, at a target weight of 14lbs and 1420 sq's of wing area.... wing loading will be 22.72oz/sqft. Though I prefer to let the performance of the plane speak louder than the math. After seeing Aeroworks ultimates fly and speaking with those who have flown them, I have no doubts this one will be awesome in the air while being a total *****-cat on take-off and landing.
Look for more photos and details as I get into it more. Watch for photos and info on the 33% version very soon as well.

RE: New Aeroworks 27% Ultimate!
Got to spend a little more time going through this ARF tonight.
We dry-fitted all the major pieces into a good resemblance of an airplane.
The fit and finish is typical Aeroworks quality -- excellent.
I've also spent some time going through the manual. This will be a very easy build. The wings are two-piece, with aluminum tube. The horizontal stabs are also removable, with an aluminum tube -- just like the wings.
Most everything just bolts on to the fuse. Only the vertical stab and motor box need glued together. The vert. stab fits perfectly.
The incidence on all flying surfaces is already set. Alignment pins are already installed (brass sleeves over these, with brass liners in the holes...nice touch).
Elevator servos are mounted in the tail (one for each half). A single servo (120oz +) for rudder is mounted under the canopy hatch (pull-pull). Each aileron has one servo. Pretty standard servo install.
No hardware is included, but most people have their own preferences here anyway...so not too big of a deal.
We plan on starting assembly next week (after a couple other projects are finished). I'll post some more info at that time....but after reviewing the manual, I'm really not expecting anything difficult. Just typical hinging, mounting the motor, and installing the radio gear. Simple.
Here's a couple pictures of everything pieced together.

Their website doesn't load. (It's being improved or something like that). I was thinking of getting a DV, but it's BIG. I'm looking for something smaller. This looks like just what the doctor ordered.

RE: New Aeroworks 27% Ultimate!
Hey guys,
Both the 27% here and the 33% Scott will be receiving are still prototypes. They are, however, the final protos before production begins.
Basically, these are the planes Aeroworks wants displayed at the Toledo show the beginning of April so people can see what to expect when the first production units arrive the end of April/beginning of May.
If you've ordered a Katana or one of the new Ultimates, you shouldn't expect them until early May most likely.
Scott and I are both lucky and have found a good contact with Aeroworks...so we both managed to snag the prototypes. We're both like a couple kids in a candy store right now. The plan right now is to have all 4 assembled and ready for display at Toledo, then hauling them all to Joe Nall. Both Ultimates and the 33% Katana will be flight-ready by then.
The 33% Katana is in as well, and we've been drooling over thatl. It is typical Aeroworks quality as well. It's built light, but strong. The wing fillets were the most interesting part to me. They are actually built-up from balsa, rather than add-on fiberglass parts like other Katana's. Aeroworks compared built-up fillets to fiberglass, and found that the built-ups were significantly lighter....and I would think they look better as well....they don't look "stuck-on"...they're built in and nicely flow from the wing.
Aeroworks has some real winners on it's hands with the new Katana's and Ultimates this spring. If you're thinking of buying any of these, I would suggest pre-ordering soon, because they will go fast!
