The first Katana I had I got used from a guy who built it with a ZDZ 50. He said it was tail heavy with that engine & didn't seem to hava enough power for good 3D. I had a ZDZ 50 & a ZDZ 60 so I decided to go with the larger engine. Believe me, the 60 is perfect with this plane. I can't comment on the 50 as I never flew that combination.
I was torn about the 1 or 2 servos in the wings deal (my last one had two) but after giving it some thought I am going to stick with 2. The old plane was very VERY precise when flying sequences so I figured why change what works. I know the second set of servos add about 6 oz. total weight to the plane but I would need to either buy new servos or go with slower servos if I were to use what I have in the shop if I were to go with just one. I have a Wild Hare composite Sukhoi to build before spring & I have to buy servos for that so I gotta draw the line somewhere.

Naaw, My ZDZ'z are all older models, before the Blue heads came out. I bought the 40 in 2003 & liked it well enough that I wound up with the 50 & the 60 too.
I have 3 Brisons as well, two 2.4's & a 3.2. They are really good engines. If I had a Brison 4.2 sitting around & I had a Katana, they would be a couple as fast as I could bolt 'em together, but thats just me. If you need a plane to put that 50 on & you have a few dollars after taxes, take a look at the new Wild Hare Cap 232. Thats gonna be a great plane for a 50.

My 40 is strong enough to hover a Hanger 9 260 at about 1/3 throttle but I wouldn't want to try & fly the Kat with it. I don't think it is as strong as my 3.2. The biggest prop my 40 is comfortable with is a 21X8 Mezlyck. The 3.2 swings a 22X10 real well.

Never bothered to tach it. All I knew was it pulled real well. Should do great in that Ultimate. I wanted one of those but I have to many planes already.

By the way. If you are going with an incowl muffler in the Kat, with the 50 you will want rudder on pull-pull, batteries up front & I would wait to install the elevator servos until the rest of the plane is built. My buddy balanced his with 11 oz. of lead in the cowl until he moved the elevator servos up under the hatch. With the ZDZ 50 in the nose & all three tail servos set up for pull-pull, the plane balanced perfect. Another solution might be CF or Fiberglass spinner. Bisson mufflers sell fiberglass spinners which is what I have on my WH 260 & they are light and cheaper then Carbon. Just a thought. (Or a warning about weight )

Depends on the muffler. I had a side mount muffler on my 60 in a previous plane. When I switched to the can it was like a new engine. Compared to a pitts style, I don't know. Sure do quiet 'em down though.

cstevec thats where mine are with ZDZ ignition or DA or 3W or any with shielded ignition .But I have had problems with Zen G38 my RX switch and Batt 8 inches from the engine I just measured it and thats about the only place to put the switches he should have 10 to 12 inches for A g62 if thats what he is going to use.

Problem with the Katana is that big fat wing root. Takes up most of the fuse & don't leave much room for a switch. If ignition noise is an issue he could get creative & mount internally then use a pushrod to turn it on & off. Sometimes you have to think outside the box.

RE: 29% Katana-S ARF---Aeroworks!!!
Hi,
I am using a 3W-48 twin on my Katana. I have it ready to go except for mounting the rx switches (dual rxs). I like to separate as far as possible from the engine/ignition but there is no place obvious to mount the switch except behind the wing trailing edge on the fuse. I was just curious what others had done.
Thanks Elson

Thankfully, the newer ignition systems are very well shielded & most don't cause interference any more. I think 3W set the standard for that. You always want to take precautions & do a good range check with the engine running but I don't think you will have any problems.

my hatch is warped pretty bad on the top piece of my katana, will canopy glue be rugged enough to hold it in place? any ideas?

To be honest, I dunno. I don't have a scale to weigh it with. No lightweight though I can tell you that. If I get some scales I'll let you know. The last one I built was a 3D monster though with the Exact same setup so if thats any indication, she should fly well.
