The Katana arrived at the house today, and as I expected there were three foamies from 3dfoamy.com and an Extreme Flight RC Profile Edge that accompanied it. My apologies to Levi at 3dfoamy and Chris at Extreme Flight R/C for your airplanes taking a back seat to this absolutely GORGEOUS airplane.

Arrived in three boxes-
1. Fuselage, horizontal, vertical, elevator halves, rudder, wing and stab tubes and landing gear
2. Wings, instruction manual
3. Cowl, Canopy, Hardware package that I purchased for it.

Everything arrived in PERFECT shape. Some initial thoughts.....

Aeroworks outdid themselves designing an airplane that was extremely light for its size. Everything has lightening holes in it, all the way to the back of the hatch. In the following pictures you'll see what I'm talking about.

Throw away the CA hinges. If you bought the hardware kit, you got the 1/4 scale dubro pinned hinges. These might be interesting to work with, but I'm still considering them or the robarts. We'll see. Robarts will be easier to install, but with a hinge slotter and a bigger blade I can go into the existing holes.

The manual looks good. I thumbed through it but needed to get everything out of its bag and onto the plane for the pictures.

Overall, an awesome looking airplane, as you'll see from the following. (Ignore the mess). Oh, and prepare yourself for boxes everywhere since the shipping boxes are double-boxed.

I got mine yesterday and I agree it is a very nice airplane! I was going to space all the parts out over a few months, but I couldn't stand it so I order EVERYTHING I need to build it... I'd estimate I spent $1500.00 in the matter of a few hours! I think I am addicted...

Does anyone know the number to RCAA?

Ok Brian I will be up this weekend to fly it. You might want to hide this one from Karl I hear he likes to play chicken with farm equipment.

If a DA 50 isn't enough, Aeroworks will have to rewrite the manual. They reference the DA about ten times as being the best engine for this aircraft. My guess is that they are expecting you to use one servo per aileron (there are two servo bays, but with the right equipment the second servo per aileron is optional) and the pull-pull setup for the rudder when a DA is installed. That's what I'm using, so we'll know in a couple of days whether that's the right arrangement.

RCAVI8TER,

ouch....oh, and finding me around here this weekend will be difficult.

Parts question....

The aeroworks guys are out of the office today. Has anyone found the servo stand offs that were supposedly included in the kit for the servos in the horizontal stab? I'm having trouble locating those and that will inevitably delay my completion this weekend (in addition to my job).

Flyboy,

They weren't included in mine either... I assume they were supposed to be there but who know we may have to make them... This is a quality ARF, but they leave a lot to the imagination... There are several things that aren't even mentioned in the instructions... Like mounting the landing gear... I just bult a WildHare Extra for a guy and the had specific directions on where to mount the gear... Not with this one... One page the plane doesn't have gear and the next it does... I'm sure I can "wing" it but it is nice to have everything in the instructions...

Got my Kantana yesterday. Nice plane. Will require some touch up on the covering (as recommended in the instructions) One problem, was that my canopy was cracked and actually a farily large chunk was broken off the rear of the canopy. An in the same box is the cowl, which has a crack and paint flaking from the crack. The crack is located top center! I've sent an email to Aero-works asking just to send the Canopy/Cowl box back and get a replacment. We will see.

I noticed the same in the instructions as far as the gear are concerned. Thought that was interesting. Also, there's some confusion in the section related to installing a canister muffler. It says that if you aren't using a cannister, there is no need to cut the covering. However, it then goes on to say that the hatch has to be installed anyway. That's next to impossible without removing the covering.

Again, though...this is a beautiful airplane and I was glad to get all of the pieces in tact. Just got one of the aileron's hinged tonight. I chose to replace the CA hinges, which were to be replaced by the Dubro flat hinges (included in the hardware kit), with Robart large hinge points. Unfortunately, the hobby shop here isn't well-stocked and I only got 18 of them. Takes 8 in each aileron.

Flyboy,

Have you looked at how to install the cowl? In the instructions it says to drill into the mounting blocks, but there is 1 block on each side and 1 on the top and bottom... The plane in the instructions doesn't have these blocks and it shows 2 mounting screws on each side. I think I will add another block on each side and have 2 mounting screws per side.

I also have hinged the ailerons and elevators with robarts. I am now waiting for the stuff I ordered to arrive to I can continue. The servos will be in Tuesday after that the engine in a couple of weeks. I should be done in about 3 weeks max!

The instructions for the cowl mounting read like it is supposed to fit OVER the fuse, as opposed to sitting on the mounting blocks. You are correct in that the small cowl mounts appear to need some additional blocks to keep it all together.

I'm just waiting on more hinges, and of course, time to finish....
Thinking about taking it in pieces to the XFC this weekend so we can work on it while we're sitting around...

I got mine Friday. perfect shape outta the box. Nice nice plane. got a good bit done, got the gear, pants and wheels on, along with the wings, servos and pushrods. Hopfully get the tail done tonight. then do the motor box. You guys have to remember that the plane is desinged for expert level builders, so they are not going to hold your hand on each and every move. The mount blocks for the cowl are different, the ones in the pics are from the prototype acft, so that, the gear, and some other minor changes. I can say and do agree the instructions are very vague and leave alot up to you to decide on your own, which is not a problem for most, and would be nice if it was at least included like on most kits, but... I have a question myself on wear to run the pull pull cable out the rear for the rudder, seems there is no perfect spot for it. Again, have to wingit.
Only complaint from me so far is the hard blocks for the aileron horns, seem to be in a very screwy position. they should have lined them up on one side or the other of the servo. Other than that, I am really happy with it.
PS Aeroworks, are you listening, it would be handy to have the back page of the instruction manual on your website, that way we can buy the hardware needed before we get the plane. Thank you.

Has anyone talked to AeroWorks and asked them about the stab servo stand-offs? Are they supposed to be included or are we supposed to make them?

Just called and spoke to Aeroworks. They said that if your servos do not fit in the stabs, you'll have to make the stand-offs. That, to me, is no big deal. I agree with Fastlif that this isn't a beginners airplane as far as building and flying goes, and agree that there should be a little more descriptive information about certain processes.

I'm cursed by the time bug and have too many other things hampering my progres on this one. I did compliment Aeroworks on a job well-done on a really nice airplane.

Both Rocko and Kevin at AeroWorks are pretty good guys. I'm sure you will get your parts.
I just ordered my 29% Kantana but am lucky, I live in Colorado and get to pick it up on Friday.
My DA-50 might even get off the shop floor someday at this rate.

Who had the dope on the giant scale CA hinges?
I want to pull-pull my rudder as well, did you guys find a good spot for the cables?
What rudder servo are you thinking of using for yours. I was considering a single JR 8611 at 6V for the rudder of mine.
Anyone got a picture of theirs complete and/or flying?
Thanks

I replaced the substandard CA hinges (even Aeroworks suggested replacing them) with Robarts. Installed OK. I had purchased CF tbes and titanium ends for the pushrods, but the aileron linkage is extremely short, not long enough for two titanium ends so I'll have to go with a threaded 4-40 rod for the ailerons. Shouldn't be too bad.

I'm going to try my Futaba 9451 on the pull-pull. They are 120.8 oz in of tourque, so it may be replaced after the initial flights. My "coach" has suggested that this servo should be OK.

FYI on the Ultracote Colors. I called in today to get the lowdown for the Red/White/Blue Katana:

RED is Ultracote True Red #866
Yellow is Ultracode CUb Yellow #884
White is probably just the generic Ultracote White. I haven't tried to match it yet, but don't really need to.
Sorry I don't have specs on the Yellow Katana, but....

Brian is there anything I should bring with me to help build the Kat at XFC? Maybe we can get enough done to even fly it. Sounds like my Muncie trip is going to be cancled so I will be in Springfield next weekend if you want to fly it there.
