RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
Just thinking of what happened to my plane, it shows that redundant systems work: I had lost one receiver, and still landed with minor dammage.

RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
For anyone who doesnt allready know , I am now making the 42% Extra 260. I have made some minor changes to the airframe to better the appearance of the plane as well as the longevity of it. The landing gear plate has been strenghthened, wings are foam core(which has not added weight to the airframe),redesigned canopy, and added cross bracing in fuselage. I still use light balsa throughout the airframe, as well as carbon wing & stab tubes, gear and tailwheel.I have finshed a plane for Mark Leseberg Jr. who I am sure would comment on it. His plane came out at 37.7 lbs with cannisters. You can contact him through his forum on this site. I am also working on 260s for John Leyland, George Hicks, and Adam Bry. These guy are all great pilots and could get planes for free, but are paying there hard earned money for the plane.I will also have kits available by years end for those who like to build there own planes.
Also, Herve I just got back from Tucson and will get the wheel pants painted and shipped to you.
Thanks

RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
I finally received my aluminium landing gear, and Robart foam-rubber wheels. The set up is quite a bit heavier than the orinal CF landing gear and Kavan wheels, but it should also be more durable. I may still order a new light weight set after break in.
The wheel pants are on their way from Dalton Aviation, but I can fly without for now.
I am ready to fly again, and just need that the rain stop.
I will post pictures.

Stick with the solid wheels...I popped 5" kavan tires on a normal landing.they are pretty delecate. The weight is nothing to a plane this size...the gear is a bit heavier too...it wont delaminate tho..
When Gene had his 42% plane, it weighed 34 pounds,lol...but i suspect it was built extra light...

RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
Well, the rain stopped, so I flew the 42% again.
I can't seem to get more than 2 flights without incident: everything was running great, so I did a wall at about 30' altidude, and I climbed about 1 or 2 seconds then the engine quit!!!&%$&##&!!!
I just got lucky that it went down in tall grass: 30' to the right, and it would have been a splatter nose first on the runway; 20' to the left, and it would have been in the hard branches.
The bottom line it that I only got three finger-size holes in the covering of the belly.
So much for the "structural issues" I got warned about: many weaker planes would have at least pulled out the landing gear, and probably would have suffered structural dammage.
Thank God, I have nothing else to do than three 1 sqare-inch patches of Ultrakote!
Now, I still have to figure out why the engine quit...?...[][&o][][&o]

RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
Today, I finally had a good, long day with my 260; after spending some time adjusting and taching the engine, I had 9 flights without a stall, and ran 3 gallons through the engine. I did stay up higher than usual, as I don't trust this engine yet.
At this point, I first want to finish the break-in (1 more gallon) with the Penzoil 2 cycle oil; then I will switch to Cool Power oil, and refine the carburator settings. Hopefully it will end up running as well as my 100cc, which has been very good to me in the last 2 years.

RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
My plane now has 23 flights. The last 7 were yeterday, running on Cool Power oil 32 to 1. The engine is running very well, although still on the rich side to complete the break in. THIS IS A GREAT AIRPLANE !!!!
I am still working on the programming; it takes time to learn the features of the 9Z, but I am getting to love this radio too.
I would appreciate any input on the proper CG. I think I am still on the nose heavy side.
Thanks.

RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
Wing sheeting cracked today: right along the wing tube.
The plane has been flying great.
The crack in the wing may probably relates to "structural issues' that a well known TOC pilot sent me a private message about.
I wish I had gotten the foam wing from the start. I just talk to Tony at Dalton Aviation: the foam wings are about the same weight as the built up wood ones, but a lot stronger.
I prefer going to new foam wings rather than fix the crack: the fix would add weight, and the structural area of the wing tube obviously needs to be very strong.

RE: Your input on 42% Extra 260
Tony (Dalton Aviation) built my foam wings that I reveived on Friday. I still had a little bit of work to do as he didn't have the fuse, and I guess each wing is custom fit to the fuse.
I started covering tonight (I will post pics when done).
This set of wings looks better than the original, and are a lot sturdier. Congatulations to Tony. I am anxious to get my plane back in the air.
It has been a pleasure dealing with Dalton Aviation.
BTW, Mark Leseberg took 2nd at the JR challange flying Tony's personnal 42% Extra 260.

Flew it today even though it was very windy maybe 20+ mph. It flew great love the snaps! Just a teen weenie bit of mixing is going to be needed, it's a keeper! LOVE THIS PLANE!

OOOOOH YEEEEEAAAAHHH !!!!!!!
I just spent the week-end flying my 260 with the new foam wings, and this thing flies like a dream. I don't know if it is because of the stiffness of the foam wings (vs the original built up wings), or the heavier weight, but it flies better than ever.
In spite of the 10~20 mph wind, the wing rocking dissapeared from the elevator/harrier. The knife edge has no coupling, so I currently use zero mixing.
After 12 flights over the week-end, it is like a honey moon all over again.
Sir knight, I like your graphics: would you mind if I copy some of them? Where did you get them? Do you have any close up details?

I got my graphics from Kirbys Kustom Vinyl Graphics http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/kirbysgraphics/ Ask for Dennis and tell him Steve from Arkansas sent you.
Got maybe 3 gallons run threw her so far. Still flies like a dream.
