Yes, for 5 years I have been running Li-Ion without regulators on the rx. I have been running Li-Polys without regulators on the 6V ignition systems for 1 year.

Can we please drop the battery discussion and talk about the flight preformance of this wonderful airplane now?

Hello Darrinc

Congratulations on the first flight of your Yak, they are pretty awesome to fly. I hope you enjoy yours, as much as I have enjoyed mine over the last two years.

sensei,

I am amazed everytime I fly it! It definately ranks up there with my friends TBM Extra!
The downside is I don't think him and I will be doing any formation flying because the speed envelopes are completely different. We might try a 3 blade on the Extra though.

Darcy,

How do you slow down a Extra? (grin)

Is this normal to have so much up thrust to take out? If not, possibly my firewall moved a couple of degrees due to a little exotherm with the micro? That is a typical problem when ever it is put on thick, not much you can do about it other than to have a resin with a really long pot life.

Just a guess.

I know what you mean, The up, down , and horizontal lines don't really have much speed difference.

Darric, some planes you have to play with the thrust line more than others, I am in the process of adjustments in the thrust of my Super-Xtra. I thought it was managable to fly untill I let a few people fly it that are better flyers than myself, there responce was just about the same, in that it needed a little tweeking on the thrustline.
Just keep working it and you will get it tuned.

Yes it is an awesome little plane, and surprizingly it flys at the same speed. Un like the Extra where it can Pylon Race and Harrior in the same flight...LOL

Also I have noticed that some firewalls have had voids of space between the layers, once you mount the motor it might compress the firewall unevenly. I just tell floks once you drill the engine if you notice the gap tape off the back side and fill the void with epoxy. Easy fix..

Darcy,

I'll give it a look over. I am really enjoying the slow to almost stopped flight envelope. It seem they made this plane just for my taste. I have yet to have it drop a wing, no matter what I've put it through.

After flying the Yak, my buddy and I both have QS 3W106's that need homes, so I'm kicking around making a slightly larger, (107") all composite, Su 31. It should come out to around 25-26lbs. With the huge cowl, thick airfoils and being slightly shorter coupled than a Extra, it should be a nice compromise and should fly very constant speed and should tumble great.

My big extra is just too big, but I've learned a lot of skills along the way to make the Su happen a lot quicker.

My 2.6m Yak arrives tomorrow. I saw a Schulman scheme at the Tucson Aerobatic Shootout and fell in love. Having recently completed a 2.6m Extra, the Yak should build faster with all the tricks I learned. With the new Yak, I'm finally leaving the Hitech 5945 scene after having installed over 30 of them in past planes. No performance problems to speak of, but once I tried the new 8611's in the elevators of the Extra, the smoothness and centering got me hooked. Heck, even the sound they make is impressively quite. I've got some K&S-86cc cans and a header kit laying around from a past project where they wouldn't fit, so it looks like the Yak is a good home for those too. How do you like those cool wheel fairings?

Thats sweet Jack! After seeing both of the 2.6 Yaks perform at the shootout I just might have to have one as well.

Darcy,
Listen to me now and believe me later. After flying your 3.1m SuperDuperExtra, you will be very disappointed when you fly a small 2.6m anything again. I will prove that to you on Saturday. And being a 3D guy as you are, the 2.6m Extra is still a better 3D plane than the 2.6m Yak, IMHO. Even if you go to the lengths some do to keep the Yak below 24 lbs., if going to the same lengths to keep the Extra's weight down, the Extra will come out surpreme and ahead of the Yak, IMHO. Yes, flying the little Extra, especially one that cost me as little as mine did, does make you relax, but you know, with the 3.0 or 3.1m, after a couple of days you say to heck with the cotton gloves on those as well, and their superior performance makes up by being much more predictable.

I flew my new Yak 2.6 today and what a joy to fly. I have a 3W106TOC.

BTW what is everybody doing about the marks the wings make on the fuse?

Yak, Yak, Yak

I flew mine today too!
It is a great flying plane, I was impressed with it because of the very little amount to adjusting and trimming I had to do to it to get it to fly good.

Default RE: First flight Comp-Arf 2.6 Yak!

I have flown the 3.0m extra (which my friend owns) and the 2.6m yak (which I own) and can say without a doubt the yak flies truer and more precises than my buddies larger extra. Up and down lines are perfect, KE has no coupling and point roles are on a rope. I have zero mixing in my yak and each flight the plane flies better. The yak really locks into torque rolls and blows the extra away in harrier rolls. The extra wins hands down in harriers but I have not programmed spoiler into my yak yet. My yak flies very light (24.5lbs with a 106) and with the least amount of throttle in a harrier the plane tries to fly out and starts to wing rock. With spoilers I am sure this will be solved. I have to disagree with DKjens, the yak is more neutral of an airframe than the extra. The extra may be better at 3D than the yak but after today I have some serious doubts...Jonas

Darrin,>>>>
"It's just a hunch, but I think a ZDZ80 would be the perfect engine for the combo that I have because it looks like I will have to take out the carbon stab tube and put the stock one back in and install a heavy Haig style tailwheel to get the CG back so that it flattens out in spins. I will problably have to move the battery pretty far back too. Hey, you can't get them all right!"

THe Zdz 80s weight is at least 2 pound lighter. Do you think measure could be taken to get the cg somewhat reasonable without adding weight? Seems like your CG is forward with recommended engine and electronics locations. A canister system or pipe on the 80 would be a nice addition if only for the sound reduction.

Wow, am I surprised and very pleased. My YAK arrived and the SAIA shipping person actual waited around while I inspected the box. I took the container inside and noted the nice pack job with foam formers that keep everything secure and separated which is a big improvement over my past Comp-ARF. Even better, the parts fit is excellent and the paint stripes on the cowl even match the fuse (2004 Schulman scheme.) The wing/stab fairings mate the round fuse like the plane was molded all in one piece. This is my first "10" as ARF's typically go. It's nice knowing you can start construction per instructions without having to sand wing-tubes, realign anti-rotation pins and touch up blems. Congrats to Comp-ARf, I see now what they can manufacture. So, is this the official RCU 2.6m YAK thread?

Ok Goekeli/Darrins, here is a thread with a generalized title to attract all 2.6 Yakkers!

[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_2325439/anchors_2325439/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#2325439]Comp_ARF 2.6m YAK-55SP[/link]

or the full URL:
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_23...tm.htm#2325439

I noticed another 2.6 YAK maiden thread that popped up overnight so I'll pull them over too.

Looks like darrinc is running a total of 6 servos.
I run 5 servos on my .40 size sport planes on a 700mah nicad. Lasts all day for me. So why cant a 2200mah lipo work on 6 servos.

I'm sure the operating current is much higher on these digis than a standard but look at the idle current.
Standard Futaba S3004 = 8ma
Hitec 5945 = 3mA

The ignition does surprise me. I run 1800mah on my 110 and get about 50minutes.

I doubt measured idle current has anything to do with the reality of flight loads and engine vibrations. Having said that, a 2200 pack should run six high torque servos well.
