Default H9 Edge 540 or SU31

Here's my dilema and I guess as far as dilemas go it's a good one to have.

Last weekend brought the demise of my H9 SU31, the IMHO best airplane I have ever flown or owned though I must admit some bias. The SU31's left wing popped and departed the airframe after a medium speed snap roll. The plane and about half the gear were a total loss.

Before last weekend I purchased a H9 33% Edge 540 ( yet to be delivered, should be in today ). Since last weekend I have located a NIB SU31. I've already secured replacement servos and the DA100 was unscathed so...............

Should I put the gear in the Edge and fly it or go get the SU31 and put the gear in it? I really don't want or need ( $$$ ) them both equipped and flying and one would be just for a backup. Which, in your opinion, would be the better flying plane? I love the way Sukhois look and fly but I've never flown an Edge except for a brief maiden flight on a WHare for a buddy.

Hmmm..... I've heard of a couple H9 ARFs (Mainly SU-31s) losing wings recently... its making me nervous about my Edge.

Were there any extenuating circumstances to the loss of your wing? If not, I'm inclined to get rid of my Edge and acquire a WH Extra 260 with stronger wings.

There are issues with the shear webbing in the H9 SUKOI..... I would contact Horizon about the loss of your plane. It happens just as you described. You hear a pop and the rest is, well, history.

Do the other models have the same issue?

No extenuating circumstances. Like I said I did a snap roll and when it came back upright and I stopped the roll the left wing panel broke about a third of the way out. It sounded like a shotgun going off. I managed to chop the throttle before it spun into the woods. A buddy of mine took all the scraps and I just called him. He's going to check the wings. Was the problem with the shear webbing that it was installed with the grain in the wrong direction? That's what I asked him to look for.

Added: He called back. The shear webbing is installed correctly so it remains a mystery what could have happened.

Yeah, the edge is supposed to be lighter, so it should fly well.. but I too have and love my sukhoi, 180 or so flights, and no problems!

Actually it was your early threads and flying reports about your Sukhoi that got me interested in getting one. I had about 100 or so flights on mine. I started with a GT80 then BME 102 then DA100. It just got better and better.

Sorry about your plane. I just got a H9SU31 that is used, should I open the wing halfs and do some reinforcing? JohnVH is my inspiration for getting one too! Sure is a nice model.

The wing on my H9 sukhoi failed in the same manner. I had about 200 flights on the aircraft with no problems. I did a parachut(not a big drop) and the wing panel folded up around the end of the wing tube.

After inspection, I believe that the shear webs separated from the wing spar ( I-beam construction without much glue or contact area).
Once the shear webs separate all the strength in the wing is lost as the spars can move independantly of each other and did []

I replaced the plane with the new H9 Edge. It is 3lbs lighter with the same equipment. I don't have much time on it yet so, it's not fully dialed in like the Suk was. I will be afraid to do walls and parachuts with it. NOT GOOD!

I definitly like the look of the Sukhoi much better I think the Suk is a better fit for the DA 100 as the Edge is much lighter construction. Mine have (had in the case of the Suk) a ZDZ 80.

THE DA at 3 lbs lighter will be awesome in the Edge.
Sounds like a good combination.

Yeah, parachutes are bad.. I dont do them with big planes, but walls I will at low speeds.. Not the first plane to suffer from a parachute!

Sounds as if that would be the prudent thing to do. My wing folded right at the end of the wing tube like luv2flyrc's did. You have your " heads up " here. I wish I had known of this issue earlier. I thought I had kept up with the threads going on this plane but don't recall any info about the wings having a problem.

I wonder if the subsequent offerings from H9 have the same wing construction as the Sukhoi and if so do they have a problem.

Mostly so that if something happens to the Edge I will have a backup airframe. Other than that just because I really liked the plane and as time goes on they will get harder and harder to find in good condition.

I have been chomping at the bit for a week now waiting for the Edge to come in. I mean how many times can you clean an engine and arrange all the servos and linkeages on the table waiting, and waiting..........aaaaarg! OK maybe I'm a little impatient. Getting started on a new plane is the best therapy for me after I lose one and I know if I had the new Sukhoi here already ( the guy that has it is only a few hours away ) I would be putting my gear in it rather than wait any longer for the Edge. I have just about made up my mind to go ahead and equip the Edge first and keep the Sukhoi for backup. Maybe the Edge will fly so well and look so good I will forget about the Sukhoi at least for awhile.

We have a pretty weekend coming up weather wise and it looks like I'll be flying the good old DP Ultimate this weekend instead of a new Edge or another Sukhoi. Ummm, lets see. Glow engine. They need a starter of some sort don't they? Yeah, that's it, and they use that green fuel.

guys, now I am afraid! I have one nib at my LHS and I contemplated buying it late this winter but now I am scared! I'm an average flyer but I am known to thrash around sometimes so im afraid I will destroy it in one of violent tempered snaps or walls!

oh boy.. [&o]

Matt,

I'd buy it, cut the blue ultracote off the bottom of each wing, glue new shear webs to the back of the spars( D tube type construction) , recover and fly. I don't think u'll have any problems if u do that.

I was contemplating cutting my wings open on my Edge and doing the same. It's going to be a shame to destroy the beauty of a covering job, but for a good cause I suppose.

Not being a builder, how far out would you recommend going with the shear webbing? What material / thickness? What glue seems best?

For those who've done this, what's the best way to recover? Just flat over the open bays, or does it need to get under the leading edge covering?

I know this seems like a lot of questions, but I've never scratch-build in Giant scale... only smaller stuff... I want to do it right! I'm a flier, not a builder.

Thanks,
Jason

Hi Jason,

I didn't open up the wings on my Edge because I was in a rush to get it flying, I'm not even sure if it's the same type of ( I -Beam )construction that the Suk is.

The Edge will be a bit more of a pain to recover because the bottom of the wing is a mult-color scheme.

Use 3/32" balsa as shear webs and run it right out to the last bay. Make sure the wood grain runs perpendicular (vertical) to the spars

Use CA or carpender's glue(must clamp) or even epoxy if u wish but, CA is the easiest.

BTW, How close are u to Mississauga, We'll have to get together and fly these birds in the spring!

Read post. Hearing of wing failures with H9's 33%s. They may work fine for you, but there are a number out there that apparently have weak shear webbing.

LUV2FLYRC,
I live near Belleville, about 2 hours and 15 minutes (130 miles) according to MapQuest. I'm also looking at selling my Wild Hare 28% Extra Special for the WH 33% Extra 260... I may have 2 birds to maiden in the spring!!!
