The first thing I did was pulled both fuselage sides out of the box and placed them on the scale, the weight was 1.4 lbs, then I did a complete .375" skeleton layout on both sides and removed all the center area between the longerons, and vertical bulkheads. I also replaced the balsa in the kit with competition grade balsa, I went with a .250" thick firewall versus a .500" firewall. At this point with the fuselage glued together, all bulkheads, firewall, and landing gear plate installed the entire fuse structure had a weight of 1.4 lbs. I then replaced the 8 oz. plastic turtle deck with a 1 lbs density foam core .500 thick and 1/16 sheeted turtle deck at just over 1/2 the weight. I replaced the wheel pants and engine cowling with new composite parts, purchased carbon fiber main gear, tail gear and wing tube. I also increased the length and depth of the ailerons, to allow for better high alpha roll and torque roll characteristics, additionally it allowed me to eliminate the need for the four each aft spruce spars. With all paint work completed, and a covered and assembled airframe including all landing gear, less engine and radio the all up weight was 9.5 lbs.

Don't you have anything better to do?

Chris, that's a good question. I am in the same boat. I have (9) Futaba servos I would sure like to put to work. Does anyone know if these would be strong enough or should I go with my JR setup with 9411's and 2721's?

Thanks,

Wayne

Hello Guys

I am not familiar with the torque values on the servos you mention, however IMO use the highest torque servo you can afford. I used 8411s on the ailerons, and elevators, and an 8611 on the rudder, all on 6 volt.

Hi Bob,

I don't know what I I was thinking when I mentioned the JR 9411's and 2721's. I have (4) 8611 220oz./260oz. @ 4.8V/6.0V and (2) 2721 116oz @ 4.8V. and (4) 8231 88oz. @ 4.8V. The Futaba 9202's have 76oz./99oz. @ 4.8V/6.0V. What would be a good set up?

Bob, what did you cover your planes with? I was looking at Coverite Fabric if it is not too heavy. You know, as the add says, Get that hand rubbed, laquer finish"
What do you think Big Guy?

Thanks Bob,

Wayne

Hello Wayne

I am a big fan of Stits Lite covering system and base coat/clear coat application, however on this airplane I wanted to get as close to a 20 oz. wing loading as possible, so I went with Monokote. Covering in this configuration only added around 7 oz. to the airframe.

Thanks Sensei,

I will do the same with the fuse sides and see how it turns out.. I am also going to us marine grade mahogony, good grain and quite light as well.. I plan to use a hollow box firewall as well (I neet to maintain the thickness but should be less than half the weight) going to seriously consider the carbon fiber components as well.. at least for mine. My sons will get the stock set up.. only because he already out fly's me the little bum.

Thanks again for your time,

Riverdancer

Thanks Bob, Monocote is what I have used on all my planes, except the Corsair, so I am used to putting it on. The plans said it will take (4) rolls of 6ft. of Monocote. Is this about what you came up with?

Thanks Bob,

Wayne

Hello Guys

I bought two 25' rolls of dark red, and used about 1.5 % of them with maybe a 35-40 % drop factor. A 25' roll in the package has a weight of just over 1 pound, you then lose the weight of the backing, paper tube, and your drop I also wanted as few seems as possible. I will post some pictures on Monday.

Hi Bob

Attached are photos of my first Laser with a Brison 5.8. It is Monokote wings and Nelson Paint on the fus. It is a flyer but the heavier weight makes it a little like a shark sometimes. The second one is the light one and it is far better to do 3D

Thanks for the Info Sensei, I will do my best to compete with your efforts.. Good Job.

I am planing to make a honeycomb firwall for mine just to see if it works. (3/8" honeycomb core, 1/16" skins.total thickness 1/2"....should be fun.)

Take Care,

Riverdancer

Hi Gents,

That sounds like a interesting way to save more weight. Honeycomb is strong.
I'm so excited guys. My kit came in this afternoon three days ahead of schedule. Now comes the fun part. Taking everything out of the box and checking the plans and instructions out.
Thanks for all your advice and building tips. They are all appreciated.
Here is a look at my baby.

Thanks again guys,

Wayne
