edgeman55-RCU,

Yes I did laminate the base as well as all the other pieces of the kit as per Kregg's instructions. I did bond the floor and forward instument panel laminations to poster board. Use Kinko's for the lamination as per the instructions.

The foam pilot is from Aircraft International. It's a "C" size and it fits the 87" Yak canopy and the cockpit kit to a "T". The pilot is 5 1/4" wide at the base, 5 1/2" tall, 3 1/2" deep. Contact Gerhard at (732) 761-0997 for availability. Aircraft International doesn't seem to have online ordering.

Kudos again to Kregg for designing and bringing to us the digital 3D cockpit for the 87" Yak.

Mine is finished. Now on to the rest of the plane..There seems to be a bit of sunshine a comin' to NYC.

Default RE: Extreme Flight 87" Yak 54 - Cockpit Build

!!!!NOTE!!! Wrong Pilot Size for Cockpit Kits.........!!!!!

I'm hearing that the 25% Tony pilot bust from www.Litepilots.com is not big enough for the 87 inch Yak. I'm very sorry about my incorrect recommendation, but it came from another builder that it was a good fit. They offer a larger 33% or 35% pilot bust named John that will be a much better fit. If you already have one of my kits and the shirt color is now wrong, send me a e-mail and I will replace the pilot print section.

Apples (above) and others have also had good success with the foam pilot is from Aircraft International. He used the C size and it fits the 87 inch Yak canopy and the cockpit kit. Others have ordered the D size for the larger looking pilot fit with equally good results. Contact Gerhard at (732) 761-0997 for availability. Aircraft International doesn't seem to have online ordering.

Personally I still like the realism with the LitePilots busts over the foamy version at Aircraft International. I have spoken with the nice folks at LitePilots and they will be happy to exchange the Tony pilot for Jon. Just send it back to them and pay the cost difference and you will be good to go. Their stuff is the best! I'm very sorry some of your are not happy with the size of Tony. However, this EF yak is in between the typical sizes. It is not a 25% or a 33% aircraft. Many will be very comfortable with the 25% Tony and others will want the slightly over sized 33%-35% John. John might even need to be shortened a bit for ideal head clearance. Just like many thins in modeling, there is more than one option and opinion out there.

Remember, if you have one of my kits with the wrong shirt color after this pilot issue, let me know and I will fix it.

Thx,
Kregg

Litepilots.com wants you to be happy with your pilot! As long as our pilot has not been modified or installed already we will gladly exchange your Tony for Jon.
Just keep in mind that Jon measures 6" shoulder to shoulder which will make the fit a 1/4" of an inch wider on each side in comparison to the dimensions Kregg has posted!
Email us ASAP and I can let you know the price difference and shipping. Stock is available so I look forward to hearing from you soon.

While at Toledo, Rick Musselman (?) discovered that the "D" size foam pilot from Aircraft International is even a better fit for the 87" Yak. He apparently was able to match the size with the kit at the show.

Yes, it is true! I decided to go with the "D" sized pilot in the Yak. I felt the body in the pic was too big for the "C" sized head. I had to cut the bottom off abot 3/8" in order to get head far enough away from canopy roof. Chris, Jeff and a few others helped me make up my mind but it will look great when finished.

I got the Jeff Schumacher pilot bust, and I am changing the sponsor decals on his hat to "Red Bull" and "Jr", that will look sweet too.

To be honest a "C 1/2" would be the perfect size but they don't make one....[:@] We all thought it looked better too big than too small.

Either pilot looks great! Thanks Kregg for your talent and contribution.

Rick good seeing you at Toledo. If you run the C pilot it just looks like Wayne is flying the Yak I also picked up a D Schummy but I got the Helmet head version. Very cool and very light.

Ric,

I'd like to see pics of your pilot on the base before I call AI to order one.
Have any shots?

Chris,

You could always sleep in your car. That is what I did in Toledo. I figured for the price of the hotel I could get my tru-turn spinner and beila prop. It really wasn't that bad......few pillows, few blankets, couch cusions, inner sity sirens, rain pelting the roof, it was a nice slumber[:'(]

Did I mention the Beila Prop

Hey Guys,

Here are a couple pics of my pilot head in comparisson to the body in Kregg's kit. This is the "D" size head from Aircraft International. The pieces are just sitting in the canopy and not yet glued or taped in. I am trying to get another plane ready to fly for the weekend before the "Red Bull" goes to the painter.

Several people felt that this head was closer to the body than the "C" size. I think the head on the Schullman pilot bust is a bit bigger than the other heads that are in this class, so another figure actually may make a better fit. I wanted one with a red shirt and this is the one they had at Toledo. Anyhow it looks good.

I thought my "Red Bull" was sweet, check this on out!!!

This just shows you that everyone sees things a bit different. I think that the AI D pilot looks to big in there. The pix higher on this thread posted by Apples look about right to me and that was a AI C. The arms and chest graphic on my kit extend out past your pilot bust to show perspective and look real. Test this with your own arm. Raise it up and out and look how it extends past your shoulder. It is all just a simulation, so it will never be perfect, but look how far we have come after having a completely empty canopy/fuse. Its all about perspective. This aircraft is simply a 30% size model and none of these busts are a perfect fit. We need a true 30% bust for the best fit. The other problem is that different manufacturers produce different size bust for the same scale. It all depends if the model was a jockey or a basketball player.

I think that Cajun RC sells a 30% bust that looks good.......? I can not possibly buy them all.

I will post a few pix next week showing a few different pilot busts on my graphics.
Kregg

BTW: Another option is to order my kit WITHOUT the pilot arms/legs graphic. Bellow is a pic of my Pitts 12 with a LitePilits bust and no arms and legs. The graphic has shadows added so it the legs are not clear, but the arms are just not there. Personaly I like the added realism of the arms & legs. The choice is yours.

Kregg,

After seeing Apples, I am sencond guessing my decision to get the "D" however for some reason several people, myself included, thought the "D" was a better fit. Either way it is better than just a head on monokote, and a panel. I think my decision was based on the fact this was the only head with a red shirt and no cigar that they had at Toledo. So it was really my only choice. The AI heads are soooo light it was worth the more crued paint job of the other companied.

Here is another way of justifying my thinking. The BIG schumacher looks kinda cartoonish to me, and since the EF Yak will do things a real plane can't, that is kinda cartoonish too. Sooooo it is a good fit.

I think the D size looks good as well. It is just a personal opinion on the pilot size.

I'm expecting several different sizes of the LitePilots.com busts very soon and then I will post a few pix to determine the best fit for my kit (in my opinion). Ric and Apples have shown nice pixs of the AI foam busts and that covers that option. I will focus on the LitePilots versions. Look for the new examples next week.
Thx,
Kregg

I have tested the 33%-35% Jon pilot bust from LitePilots.com and I find it to be a very nice fit. The pilot comes way to tall. so I simply cut about 1 inch off the base and sanded it flat on my belt sander. It lines up with the pilot arms nicely. Unfortunately I can not locate my digital camera cord to download the pix for you to see. Below is a link to the bust that fits very well..... In my opinion.Jon comes with a red, yellow or blue shirt. I have not received the smaller 25% Tony bust yet, but judging from the larger one looking pretty good, I'm sure it is a little small.

http://www.litepilots.com/33Jon.htm

I will post the pix as soon as I find my cord.
Thx,

Here are the pix. This is the 33%-35% Jon pilot bust and you can see that it fits after shortening the height. The blue color match is better than these pix. I think the flash made them look different. The red should look good and I'm going to adjust the blue for a even better match. Thanks to LitePilots.com for helping with a few exchanges.
