Default I finally maidened my 1/3 GP Extra 330L!!!!

Well everybody, I finally flew this airplane after seven months of hard work building it!
I quickly found out that it was worth every minute of the work!

It flew very well, very stable, yet responsive to the controls, especially the rudder. I have a lot of trim flights ahead of me still to do.

I got 2 flights in (about 15 minutes total flight time).
The pilot decided that he was not liking the ride, the wood base all around him was broken. There was only about 1/4 inch of sheeting holding him in place. Will have that fixed tonight.

I am running Hitec 5625's all around except the rudder which is a Hitec 5735.
The motor is a ZDZ 80 blue head (it actually is a pretty close match to the paint/monokote).

Here are some pictures, sorry, the wife did not get any really good ones in flight, but will get more soon.

I like the covering, looks good. What kind of weight did you end up with?

Thanks for the reply TonyC,

I have not weighed it since I have completed and balanced it, but I did an initial weighing before I got the motor.
I calculated it to be about 24 to 24.5 pounds then guessing the weight of the motor and ignition. I had to add 12oz's of weight to balance the airplane (some of this will be coming off), so the final weight is somewhere around 24.5 to 25 pounds (dry).

The motor is running quite a bit on the rich side, but it does not have a problem pulling this airplane around.

LuvBipes,

The flying site is in Lehi, UT. We have quite a good field to fly from, I think the runway is about 30' x 400'.
We have a full taxi way and covered pit areas also.

I wish it were a bit warmer so that there was no snow anywhere around. It is snowing like crazy today, hopefully it will clear out by the weekend so I can start trimming the plane.

Looks good!

I put the 3rd and 4th flight on mine today. 26lbs with smoke and sachs 5.8. I'm mainly into 3D. The first flights I was very nose heavy. Moving one battery battery back has helped alot, but I'm still not where I want to be. Those interested in my results so far, the first flights I could not hold up a harrier because of being so nose heavy, tonight I got it into a consistent rock solid harrier. Takes full up elevator still even with 2" more surface on them. I believe moving the CG further aft it will do a harrier very easy. I'm pleased that the plane doesn't wing rock. Torque Rolls still need work, My rudder is alot bigger than the stock one but I still don't seem to have much effectiveness at all when the plane is standing up in a hover. Once again CG could help this.

I hope to get a video of it at some point.

cygnet ..BME 110...20lbs [X(], how did you get it to balance?

Here is my version, sorry for the original poster...

I am in the finishing stages of covering and paint. ZDZ80RV with JMB canister. Hitec 5925s (4x) on ailerons, Hitec 5945s (2x) on elevators and single Hitec 5955 on rudder with pull pull. All set with 3D throws --> +/- 45 degrees on ailerons and rudder and +/- 55 degrees on elevators. Tails surfaces enlarged a lot from the plan. Ready to fly less fuel should be around 22 lbs. no smoke system. This plane HAS to fly IMAC and 3D.

Were your planes stable after take-off ?? How about the enlarged tails surfaces, did it make over control problems ? Were your CGs set as per the plan ?

Test flight will have to wait some, we still have some snow here. In fact, I made a very good ride in a full scale Decathlon last week-end (on skis) landing on frozen lakes etc...

My CG started somewhere around 1/4" in front of the recommended. Right now I seem to be right on the recommended (can't remember where that is), I have it marked on my wing tips. I had no over control problems, on low rates the plane flew very very smooth and gentle.

Cygnet,
I've got one I plan on putting a BME 110 on also. How did your CG come out? What did you have to do to get it to balance?

Thanks, Jim

P-51,

They voted last year to close the Salt Lake modelport (to put in soccer fields of all things), but it has not been closed as of yet. We have an IMAC competition scheduled there in June.
The Lehi modelport is right next to a county park area, and there are no homes in the direct vicinity, so I don't think that it will be going any where for a long time.

Ah, guess I got the two confused. Nice looking plane by the way. The photos with the mountains remind me how much I enoyed that area when I was there.

If you are using a BME 110 everthing has to go in front of the wing tube, I used pull pull on the rudder, other than that nothing special, this is also my second 330 my first one had a ZDZ 80 on a pipe and that one weighed in at 21lbs 12oz

Woops,

I have not found anybody locally that has a digital video camera.
My digital camera will take videos, but they are not very good quality.
I will if the wife will come out this weekend and try to take a video of me flying it.
