RE: BME YAK 54 87"
I am almost done with mine, due to 2 week rain and 30 mph wind gusts last weekend I did not finish it earlier.
I removed the bottom of the canopy floor and rear of the canopy, it was all plywood and not needed (for me) and significant weight 2+oz.
I am looking forward for the replacement tail wheel that Max mentioned, has anyone received it? I was almost breaking the original couple of times even when installing the canopy hatch.
I am just going to balance it tonight and decide on the location of the batteries, as well as seal the hing gaps, alos do the elevator mod.
I will post pictures tonight.

What elevator mod are you speaking of? I have seen the thread where the elevator was trimmed and then re-boxed. Do you know of any others? I am hoping to get mine in the air within the week and been stalling on the idea of cutting into the elevators.
Thanks

I want to compliment Max on his SUPER customer service. Today, sure enough, I got my replacement CF tailwheel mount, Fed Ex, no less!!!!
Guys - this kind of customer service, and reliability of 'word' is so rare these days.
EVERYONE ought to buy a BME just to experience the level of service!!!
KUDOS, Aeromax!!!!!!!!!!!!![sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

I just bought this plane yesterday, I hope they send the new tail gear with it. I plan to fly basic IMAC with it for 2006 and hope I made the right choice of plane.

I got mine also and there is no doubt that the new gear is stronger than the original. I'm still not going to replace the Graph tech gear I had already put on the plane, but my hat is off to Max for even addressing this problem. I generally don't expect first rate hardware with an ARC/ARF, but this does show a commitment to us and his planes.
Thanks Max.
Thanks Max.

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
I have been weighting my options in purchasing a 27% or 33% YAK 54. For some reason or another I can't find one YAK in the market that will meet my expectations. The Aerotech YAK is built light and the covering and color scheme are very nice.........but CA hinges? That's kind of cheap for a $500 plus kit. Goldberg new 25%, too small. Carden 37% too big (and expensive). Quique's 85" Yak is very nice, but about $780 delivered with hardware package. That leaves me with the BME Yak as the most economical alternative for a nicely built YAK, except for the covering material and color scheme. Now...........if I could buy it as an ARC, I am sold

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
BME is offering a solid white - not quite an ARC, but pretty close.
After owning the TOC Yak, I have to give the nod to this one in terms of total "value".... quality of build, covering, flight characteristics, weight, and purchase cost.
At least it was AVAILABLE for delivery.
There are SO many "vapor ware" airplanes out there....

It looks like it balances at 5.75 " with 6 oz in front with DA50 and 5955's all around and stock muffler, I am relocating the batteries for lateral balance.

Cobra78 - Do you have pics of the elevator trimming? I will change the elev. servo arms to 1.5" for 3D capability. Doing measurements the other day proved that it needs to be done.
Would appreciate pics....and "how to"....

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
I haven't done the elevator trimming, I decided that I will setup this one for imac with no more than needed throws, I would like to have a plane that's not all over the place with every input, I know I know you will say use expo and I am using it. But that's not the same.
I used to set up my planes to max throw but now I set them up so that I have all the resolution of the servo. I started noticing the difference between two, maybe I am getting better. If I really need more throw I can do elevator mod anytime.

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
I have not flown it yet, it has been finished for sometime but due to weather I could not maiden it yet
I am no expert flyer either, I will be trying imac for the first time with this one. But I could have a XFC pilot fly it maybe this weekend if he comes, I will try to record a movie of him/yak doing unlimited.
Here are some pictures, it needed some nose weight (6oz ) to balance at 5.75" but the good thing is if that weight is gone it balances about 6.25"-6.5" good for 3d setups, first flight will show what I will do with it weather it is okay or not.
This is the first time I am putting the weight like this mounted to the standoffs with zip ties, hope it does not fail, it looks and feels strong.
I have received the new tail gear today, it is significantly stronger and I don't think it is crap, the stock one was crap, the replacement will do the job just fine, altough the finish of the stock was better and this one has lots of pin holes, it took me 1 minute to swap between them. But hey what do I care BME did the right thing,
Otherwise everything is ready for saturday.
btw you can see that I have taken almost all of the cockpit flor, 2+ oz there
edit: typo

I want one of this, but I will have to store it inside the house(no patio), and I heard is like storing a weed eater inside.

Ask me,
I live in an apartment and made my second biggest mistake on this plane I just mixed two gallons of gas and oil in a 2 gal container and poured into a 1.25 gal jersey modeler ofcourse in the process spilled some on the table.
What a smell inside the house, have to isolate my hobby room from the remaining part and open the windows outside is <35F and we are freezing now, sitting with coats, my fiance is pretty mad and I beleive I am going to be really sorry for this one.
If you ask me what was my first mistake, it was mixing 15 minute hardener and 30 minute hardener and waiting for it to cure duh!!!
Everything ready for tomorrow, weather looks okay. I will plug the vent line I have to find something for the muffler and carb when storing it.

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
I had the maiden flight today, it went all well.
The DA 50 after 20-30 flips started and run like a champ rich but good, turned the Bolly 22x8 at 6800rpm, after the range check I took her up and it was a good overall flight. Even though I had expo and low rates at 60% the aileron was especially touchy. And I do not have crazy throws.
The right trust look good the straight ups were good. the plane when inverted dived to ground and the balance looked good. however the general flight attitude was like tail heavy.
I have to check up thrust. rolls were axial.
No bad tendencies, it could slow down quite a bit and da 50 sure has good power.
it is too early to come to conclusions and I have to have at least 30-50 flights with it to work on trim but I think it has some potential.
I could get only one flight today due to wind gusts, it was managable but no reason to risk, tomorrow weather looks warmer and calmer.
Now that I know it flies time to trim it.
Here is yak posing, the dude in pictures is me.

RE: BME YAK 54 87"
Cobra, I'm glad you had a successful maiden, your flying field looks awsome. I think your problem is not enough down thrust, I would add a little and try it, then add more if needed. I don't think you'll need that many flights for trim, but who knows.

Awesome pic's. That thing really looks impressive at your field. I called Max about the fact that the manual calls for no down thrust. He says that aerobats should not have down thrust and it should fly fine with no up OR down thrust. But the fact that you dive when inverted but it flies like it's tail heavy does send up a flag to a possible thrust problem. Have you tried the test where you fly high throttle straight and level and then cut the throttle? Watch what it does after you cut the throttle. Another test is how it lands. Does it just fly right in nice and level or does it tend to balloon? Again I say, very cool looking plane.
