RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I put the CG at the recommended point in the manual and then I did the CG flying test. take it on a 45 upline , roll inverted and check to see if it pitches to the belly or canopy, I also roll the plane into a banked turn and see if the nose drops , it will drop a little but if it is alot then I move the CG till I think it is right. Then I fly some maneuvers to check it. I started at 6 1/2" back from the leading edge but right now I know I moved it so I am not sure what it is. It is a feel thing for me. I know I added some nose weight but not much. It takes me about 10 flights or so to get it right, then I move battery and what ever else I can to get the CG at the point I want without adding lead. IF you really want to set up a plane to fly great, there is a set procedure. I have a DPM edge 540 and Dave Patrick provided the cheat sheet to set up your model. I know it has been published by others but I dont remember who. I think it was in a magazine. It takes me about 60 flights before I finish everything but it is worth it. The top flyers use this or some variation that they came up with. We have a top competition pilot in our club and he does the same thing, he just used his own method. He has a new competition plane that should be taking its maiden any day now. He told me it takes him 60 - 70 flights to set the model up, but man what a difference when you do.
If you cant find it let me know and I will try to get it to you somehow, I work alot out of state so If you can find it on the web that would be better, try the IMAC home page.

I am still putting mine together, its the new red white and blue scheme. How much of the cowl do you need to cut out for cooling? and how is the landing gear holding up? looks a little weak to me

Landing gear has been good, I fly off of a nice paved runway. THe cowl I just cut the bottom to clear the muffler for the DA 50, I used a slimline pitts style, that was it...

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
aerobob,
i copied the info for the web site for the trimming of the plane, this is good info. The chart is the same one I received in my DPM Edge a while ago that I still use today, Good luck
http://www.mini-iac.com/EditModule.a...View&ItemId=27
http://www.nsrca.org/trimA.htm
These 2 pages are accesible from the IMAC home page which is http://www.mini-iac.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=1
they are located under articles, then flight school...

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I have one of these in the shop now. Hope to get started on it tonight. Going with a BME 44 as that is what my buddy had laying around. Servos will be 8411's all the way around. First impressions out of the box is very well made and well covered. I just finished up another Yak from someone else and was not as impressed. Depending on how the 30% goes I might get a larger one.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
nice page aero, good stuff on there. The BME will come out a little tail heavy or should. It is lighter than the DA 50. So try to get everything you can towards the front as you are building. Good Luck

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I just received mine today . All i can say is WOW !!! ARF's have really improved lately
I usualy prefer to build my planes , in fact this is only the second ARF i've purchased , but this thing looks impressive so far
I opened the boxes and inspected everything and did a trial fit on wings and stabs , everything fits very well and the covering job isnt too bad either.
I plan on using my old but very reliable Brison 3.2
This is the first GS ARF i've ever been excited about , I dont think i'll be dissapointed .

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Hey guys,
Very interested in this Airplane! I've been looking really hard at the WH Edge but I'm always open to Idea's.. I already have my equip. set as it's all I can afford! They will be:
5645's on Ail./Elev.
8611 on Rudder.
DA 50.. Either Stock muffler or Slimline Wrap around.
2 NiMH Battery's (1 Ign. 1 Rec.)
How would this set-up work? What else would I need to buy? Thanks guys
P.S. How would this comare to the WH Edge

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Mine will arrive mid next week, and I've rounded up all the stuff. JR 8611's on rudd/elev, 8411's on ailerons, MVVS 45 w/canister system...
Can someone measure the landing gear? Need height, track width, fuse width, etc?? Would much appreciate it!!!
(Also got mine in the Red, White, Blue.... fearful the silver would be invisible)

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Ice Man,
Set up sounds good, The Yak comes with an aluminum spinner, the prop cut outs are small so you will have to cut it for your prop, no big deal though. This saves some money and is what I used. Other than what you mentioned you will need basic stuff like switches, extensions. The hardware package the Yak comes with is good but I did switch out the tank for a 24 oz. Dubro. As far as comparing to an edge, I will give you my opinion, I do own a DPM Edge 540 with a zdz 40 on it. Because of the wing design the Edge is a little more forgiving than the Yak but not much. The Yak flies pattern better with little or no mixing where the edge needs mixing. They both 3D good but the Yak has the advantage IMO. If I had to chose to buy only one ... I would buy the Yak.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
How much $$ for a good cannister setup for the DA 50? I don't have much cash and I'm pushing it for this bird (hard being 15 eh?) But I want it to PERFORM.. And of course look good.

Whats you set-up?
I was just thinking Cans for the power... Plus If I'm thinking right less cowl cutting? To me thats the worst part of building a cowled plane:>

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I have no experience with cans personally. but i have seen 2 guys at my field 1 DA 150 and 1 3w 100 remove their cans for stock mufflers and have been very satisfied with performance said they had LESS power with the cans. I am just using a ZDZ 50 with stock muffler, as this is my first gasser i am by no means a expert but I have always been told cans are for noise suppression and tuned pipes are for power.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I've run several gassers - with wrap-around style mufflers and canisters. The canisters I ran, although not a true "tuned" system, do broaden the torque curve and provide some boost when compared with identical pitts-style mufflers.
A true tuned system can be very quiet AND provide lots of boost power. THe KS Canisters are pretty good in that department.
ON my Yak, I'm givning the MVVS 45 and it's 3204 canister a go. I'll be sure to report on all of it, but I'm doing it for 'boost', and not for noise.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
I still haven't found a price on Cannisters... Where's a good place to buy from.. If they're to much Then I'll just go with a pitts wrap aorund.
EDIT: Went to www.desertaircraft.com and found this :
http://www.desertaircraft.com/page.php?Page=KS
Looks to me that I would need a 90 degree Header... But What O.D. and how do I know it will fit the DA 50-R? Then I would need the 50cc can with a 90 degree outlet..
Right?
How well would this system perform? It's only $10 more than a Slimeline wrap aound...

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Thanks to CK1, I don't need to post pics (except I *will*, later) even though mine is the Red/White/Blue. Interesting that the White is really more "Pearl Silver"....it is DEFINITELY *NOT* White, but that's okay - it looks like a million bucks.
Parts fit, alignments, prefabrication are just amazing in an airplane this inexpensive!!! The manual talks about mounting the cowl with screws/blocks - but that has been updated, and it mounts with a RING that has ALL blind nuts already installed!
Stabs aligned perfectly. Wing tube too. Sockets in wings are pretty tight, and might need light sanding like the GP Wagstaff did.
Big, FLAT nylon hinges supplied, and all the slots are cut wide enough ("epoxy fit") to make them work well. Nicest touch there are TWO hinges very close together at BOTH tip and root of ailerons! Total hinging surface is probably around 8-9 sq in of FLAT gluing surface!!
Just wanted to let followers know how great the quality is.
Oh -yeah - EVERY bolt/nut/screw AND pushrod, control arms, ball links, clevises is IN THIS KIT!!!! That's another $100 bucks or so, easy - and this stuff looks first rate quality.

RE: YAK 54 TOC1
Hi guys, i was reading this thread and have some questions about this YAK, I just received my plane and the manual was not there. I downloaded the manual from the TOC website, but it doesn´t say how the firewall is to be assembled. Does any one have pictures of the procedure or writen explanation for it?
I am using the ZDZ50NG with a pitts style muffler from RCShowcase, Hitec (analog) metal geared servos with 106 oz/in torque.
The firewall is the only thing holding me back.
Any help apreciated
Steven
