Yeah I think I helped it break. The wheel collar loosened up and fell off. The wheel pant was holding the wheel on, damaged that too. After fixing everything, I flew all day yesterday no problems. Then today first flight landed and the left wheel dug in and almost had an incident, some right aileron fixed that. Came back to see the wheel hub cracked, the pant damaged again, and paint peeling off the left main gear leg at the bend. Came home and installed some CF back up gear I got from Graphtech at Toledo. The pant is fixed (again) with fiber cloth and thin CA. I just called my local hobby store, they have the Dubro light treaded ones I posted in the above link. I'm all set.

BTW the BME gear is 9.4 ounces, the Graphtech CF gear is 8.6 ounces (and quite a bit stronger).

ORIGINAL: JohnVH

Hmm, Ive harrier landed mine and never had a problem... Take them down to your LHS and see what there is.

Yeah, right, John! I can just hear what you would say if I'd called this morning and said let's go flying. It would be something like "UMMM.....NO!!!" Anyway, good day for...cutting vinyl!!!?? hehehe

Hi All,

Looking for some help if possible.

My Edge is coming, but it's going to arrive with very little time to spare before one of the biggest events here in Scotland.

I have a guy working on my Red Bull Graphics (the Kirby scheme) but can't print them off til i give him some dimensions, so i'm looking for some sizes if anybody can think of a way of giving me them. I was thinking maybe just getting the dimensions of the plane and making a paper template to play with. Any Ideas??? The one that's going to be a headache is the flag on the vertical stab, i'd need the angle of the leading edge to get that correct.

I have everything else sitting here waiting for the model and just need the graphics before i can lock myself away in a room and not come out til it's built and flying.

Cheers Guys,

Zen.

Anybody have some tires for this ARF they are not using? I'll but them. One of mine cracked at the hub and I can't seem to find an equal replacement. The weight of these is 0.7 ounces each. There are not any 3.25 inch tires out there that are 0.7 ounces for a 3/16 axle. The Kavan's are 3.5 inches. The Dubro ones are 3.25 but are over twice the weight and will only fit a 5/32 axle.

I just found these from Dave Patrick, they just might be the ticket.

Joe,

I used those tires on my Edge at first. Yes, they are very light but very soft. They ware out quickly on paved surfaces and get very large flat spots in them while the plane is sitting. The flat spots don't hurt anything other than it looks like your running around on square tires. They work fine, just order a few sets if your flying off pavement.

Received my EDGE-III Everything is in perfect condition!! I have two questions. Should I set the motor distance at 6.75in out from the fire wall to the prop hub or 7in? CG would be my concern. I'm using a Taurus T-52 which is 6oz heaver that a DA-50. 2nd should the CG be in the center of the wing tube?

Thank You.
AL.

I can't believe it came with wing bags for the wings, stabs, and fuselage!!

How much does the muffler weigh? My DA 50 w/ heavy Slimline pitts was at 7 1/4 inches out from the firewall and balanced really well. 5 1/2 inches from the leading edge at fuse is what I recommend. Flies great at this CG. Ignition batt (4 oz) is behind firewall, 7.2 oz rx batt is under canopy at the rear of the canopy.

I measured a Taurus at Toldeo, you may need stand off's to get it past 6 1/2 inches from firewall (it was something like that). Not sure what stand off's you can use with that radial mount. Putting it at 6.75 might work with both batt's behind firewall but it's a guess.

Ken, it's a grass field that I fly off. I have these on my DPM Edge 540T 27% and they are holding up good. I always store the planes off the tires. I was just wondering if they would hold up to the weight of this BME Edge (2 more pounds). A hard turn at the end off a landing could crack them I bet. Gotta keep an eye on them. I just hate to go from 1.4 ounces of tires to 4 ounces. The plane's weight is already way more than I wanted.

Thanks Joe
I made a 4"x5/8"x5/8" wood ring (dough nut) for a standoff (Very lite). Puts the motor hub at 6 3/4" out from the firewall. Muffler is a very lite B&B from Bennett for a 3.2 sachs, side mounted. Half the size and weight of the Taurus pitts. No way I can use the pitts. I would have to cut half the firewall away to make it fit. $100 muffler and can't use it.
I'll start there. I can easily add thickness to the ring if needed it's just a spacer and will not be glued in. I will leave the cowling to last just in case I need the motor farther out.
Thanks for your help. If this plane fly's as good as it looks I'm already smiling.

Hey guys, I just read the last several pages of this thread & plan to read from the beginning when I get a chance.

I'm looking at a 30% gasser for my next plane & from what I've been reading on RCU the BME Edge III is where I want to be.
I'm still a couple months away because I can only extort a few hundred dollars at a time from the wife.
Plus I have to finish my current project.

I'm sure there's a lot of good setup advice to be found in this thread so I won't ask any dumb questions yet. (this will be my first gas plane)

Does anybody happen to have any good video's of the Edge III?

Tony

See post 590 on page 24 for JohnVH's video. It's the best I've seen so far.

Tony,

FYI, the Edge II and III are pretty much identical except the Edge III comes with more goodies. I thought I mention it because the video is of the Edge II and cost a little less. Both fly the same and they are winners.

Thanks guys. That video is great and it even has good music. I was also wondering what the difference was between the II & III.

I have been in the search for a better 3D foamy too so the signature paid off for John. I think I'm going to order one of the edge foamies.

Hey tuwood

The II is pretty much the same design as III.

The only differences are

-III has a pipe tunnel/is cannister ready
-III comes w/ wing and fuse bags
-III has alot of Carbon Fiber. Control arms and great gear.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head, but there might be more.

That's pretty close. I think the third line you listed only the aluminum control horns are new to the III (and they are nice). The CF and gear came with the II.

Hey guys,

So it's finally Saturday. The sun is out, sky is blue. I finish my honey-do's, load the plane (new Edge II) and support equipment, and get to the field.....20 mph crosswind!!!!!DOH!!!! I hate it when that happens!!! Yeah, probably could have flown as our field is as wide as it is long (almost), but the BME planes are so light, I don't think it would have been much fun. So I did get the engine kill switch set up on the radio and got back home asap so I might get to go back out tomorrow!!! Supposed to be really nice and there should be at least five other BME's at our field tomorrow!!!

Will take some pics tomorrow!!

Regards,

Smart move. I'd rather hear about tomorrow and how great the flying was rather than a "I broke off my landing gear" today. Plus you have been waiting a long time to fly that thing, what's one more day?

I'll be waiting for a flight report.
