Electric Gasoline Fueling Systems
I am thinking of building or buying an electric fueling system for my GS gas planes. What is everyone using? Jersey? They seem very expensive as well as the abel. I've been told the VW pump works great but is a diaphram pump and only goes one way. Got any input? The hand cranker is wearing me out.

I saw a setup once a few years ago at a fun fly I attended. I don't know if it was homemade of commercially obtained. It used a small hand operated air pump to pressurize a standard gas jug and then the gas would flow whenever a small valve was opened on top of the jug. I wasn't into gassers then so I didn't find out anything else about it. You're right though, those gas electrics are expensive.

No the VW pump is not a diaphram pump its rotary> Got mine from CB Performance products online.
The Sig one goes both ways but mine fell apart.
You can buy the pump like ones that Abell sells from various sources but I like the VW one better as its sealed...bout $45.
I cannot see the price in the made up ones however I guess the lawyers among us would know something about that.

I pressurize my one gallon fuel can with a simple basketball/football pump. It's positive, and the whole system only cost a couple of bucks (I had the old pump from years ago). I think one has to be a little bit retarded to even think about using anything electric around gasoline vapors. Yes, I know they sell them, but I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole.

Lots of vendors carry the pump the assemblers like JM or abel use. The VW pump looks more expensive.

Jim,
Do you leave the pump attached all the time? I would expect the gas vapors would eventually harm the pump seals. Do you have any valves in the plumbing like I described earlier?

All cars with injection use electric fuel pumps and 90% of them are in the fuel tank. I have used and will keep using a homemade system I made about 8years ago. Only thing now is tring to get a pump that pumps both ways. The Jet Guys have a good selection of pumps that would pump gas with no problems.

I use a hangar 9 hand crank pump. It fills a 50 oz. tank in less than a minute, and no batteries or pumps to mess with. It always works. I like to keep things simple. Scott

You can use a small electric auto fuel pump. However, they do only pump one way. Check Hobby Lobby. They carry a couple of gasoline-approved pumps. Be SURE you seal the electrics, including the battery, from the gasoline fumes. Use a sealed switch rated for explosive environments.

O.K. but I still don't like the idea of electric around fuel vapors. Submerged in gasoline where there is no air - I don't have a problem.
Anyway, here's two photos of my very simple fuel can.
First photo - as is in transport. Air pump is always connected. The fuel fill line has a felt clunk inside. The third line is a vent/fuel return line.
To fill: Disconnect fill line from vent line. Attach fill line to airplane. Attach vent line over post (stove bolt), making the tank airtight. Pump to pressurize tank. When fuel tank is full, disconnect vent line from post. Attach fill line to vent line, and this assures no spills in the transportation mode.
Nothing is more simple or more safe.

I like Jim Messer's pressurized solution. I've been using the same on and off for years...I might even have gotten the idea from Jim several years ago, I just don't remember....but I don't share Jim's concerns over using an electric pump(as long as you're careful), and that is still my favorite. No matter how you hook it up, the Kavan pump is the best. It is reversible, lasts for years, and is relatively inexpensive. Here are a couple of links to places that carry it:

Nice unit Jim, the pump looks very effective for putting gas into the tank. I just need it to extract it as well.
The kavan unit does not look as stout as that commonly used by JM and abel.

Contrary to what a lot of people think, size does not always matter.
...or make a product better. I do not know for sure that the Kavan is better than the Graylor, since I have never used a Graylor, but they are less in expensive and in my experience, very reliable. Some people have reported leaks with the Kavan, but you'll find plenty of people that swear by them and have never had a problem, myself included. I have used them for going on 7 years without any issues. They last a long time.

Thanks Bill. I could not find any information that it could be used for gasoline. I am not biased either way. I just got back from the field and can testify that it is time I get something better than the hand cranker that I have now. !~)
