Hangar 9 Cap 232 33% not popular?
I have an opportunity to get a Hangar 9 Cap 232 33% with a BME 110 rtf at a good price. I know it is well maintained and a great plane. This will be my first large scale plane. In my short time of research I have found that this is not a very popular model for competition. Why is that? Everything I read lends me to believe this is a great flying model. Is is out of style? I see a lot of Extra 330's, Yak's, Edge 540's and a few others, but no Cap 232's. I am relatively new to the Scale Aerobatic scene, as I started off with helis and have been totally immersed in that world for the past 3 years. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

IMO the H9 33% Cap flys the best of the H9 33% planes. They fly awesome and with a bme 110 would be unreal. These sold out pretty quick when first available. After some time H9 came back with a short run of these, and they sold out of those really darn quick as well, there is a reason why you dont see too many for sale, they fly great. 3D awesome, and precise if the CG isnt too far aft. If your first gassr though, be prepared as the 110 will put the plane into orbit.

Another reason you dont see many of them is they've been discontinued for I guess two or three years now. Guys that have them tend to hang on to them. I just bought one that I'm getting ready to go pick up. From what I have read, they are one of THE best 3D machines out there, and very good at the IMAC stuff, too, as long as you get the CG tweaked just right. Planning on a ZDZ 80 for mine. Another thing you have to consider as far as the competition arena goes, Whatever the big winner's fly, is what everyone else is going to fly. When Chip Hyde won the TOC, everybody had to have a big Ultimate. QQ won, everyone started flying Yaks. Edges and Extras have always been, and will always be popular, not only because they are superb R/C aerobats, but because of their significance in the full scale aerobatics world. The full scale CAP's have always been top performers, but there have never been too many of them here in U.S competition. In Europe, on the other hand, it's a different story. Dont let the fact that there arent too many H9 CAP 232's around discourage you. They're a solid, capable platform, and at the very least, you will have something different at the flying field!

I also had one with a DA-100 that flew great. If the price is attractive, jump on it. There are some fliers out there who are afraid of Caps because of the reputation the earlier Caps got for snappiness. But this plane is nothing like the old Cap 20/21. Set up correctly, you'll love it.[8D]

I have one with a BME 100 and 479 flights.
The reason it doesn't have more is that I removed the engine and put it in a Sukhoi.
I now have it back in the Cap and should have over 500 flights soon!

"IMO the H9 33% Cap flys the best of the H9 33% planes."
Hard to argue that point, but it's definitely one of the stronger models too!

My son had one (sniff, sniff) w/ GT-80 and it flew great - Hoovering was just 'O.K.' - but the Edge 540 he got next was a couple of pounds lighter - and with the same engine - wow! There is still one NIB sitting in a local hobby shop.....

RE: Hangar 9 Cap 232 33% not popular?
This was one of H9' biggest blunders.... I can hear it at a meeting ..... hmmm lets see - I think we will make a plane that looks great, is very reasonably priced, flies incredibly well, is strong enough to last for hundreds of flights, and when put on the market it sells out quickly... YEAH, THATS IT - PERFECT. NOW LETS NEVER MAKE IT AGAIN.
Someone there had to have their head up and locked when they made the decision to kill it. My advise - BUY IT.. Best H9 plane ever made. I have one NIB just waiting for a sunny day!! If I find another for sale I will buy it too.. (keep in mind I HATE ARFS).
The H9 Cap and QQ Yak are two of the best built up ARFs made. My guess is that H9 was losing money on it, hence the kill. Too bad.. the H9 Edge and Extra (replaced the CAP) are not built anywhere near the same quality as the CAP was...
Did I say BUY IT???? !!

Thanks for all the feedback. It nice to hear all of the positives. I will definitely be purchasing the plane, I have always liked the look of the Cap 232 and am a bit dissappointed there are not more of them out there.

Good deal! the only negative about the plane (besides the fact they dont make them any more) is the wing hold down, I dont like the screws in the wing tube out in the middle of the wing, but modify for bolts in the fuse, no biggy, and if thats the only complaint, thats a pretty darn good airplane!

Best harrier airplane ever made---period. Parts are still available and cheap from Horizon. Mine deadsticked at about 10 feet high in a harrier, then just kind of plopped down on the gear. It spread the gear so bad the muffler had dirt in it. I ordered a new cowl and gear for less than 60 bucks and had It flying again in less than 3 days. Awesome airplane.

I wonder if you could order enough parts for a complete plane lol. There is one for sale on here too, just has the control surfaces hinged. I would get it, but I sure do like the looks of that new Aviation Models 33% Yak.

By the way, I dont mind the wing attachment method. I leave the tube in one wing so it only takes about 1 minute and one balldriver to be ready to fly. I only pull the canopy off every couple of weekends to check everything over.
