RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Hi Lee,
Sorry if I have been a little remiss with the thread...just a hard time of year with a new job and holidays and all. However, I did dry-fit the cannisters and it is gonna be a snap! I am using the MTW TD75...they come in two varieties, long and skinny and short and fat.
I opted for the longer skinny varietyfine, but I do believe the other version would fit just fine.
The total length of the cannister is 15" including the flange (can itself is 14") and the width is 2 1/4". Here is a pic of the cannister....

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Well guys..time to get serious about gtting this model completed so I have a little more to add tonight. The engine is hung on some 3/4" aluminum spacers my friend Paul Gentile was kind enough to machine for me (as he was running out the door on vacation! Thanks Paul...). I am now in the process of mounting the cannisters. I ran out of time tonight but the front mount is going to have to be removable to have access to the landing gear nuts. I have a few ideas but I haven't yet decided what direction I am going to take...yet. But overall it looks like it is gonna be a fairl easy deal.
Oh yea, I opted to use blind nuts on this engine installation just to make it easier to deal with the when the engine is off the plane. The firewall is made from some seriously hard wood and I don't believe that is is going to crush at all.
Here are a few more pics of tonights progress:

Hey Doug,
Don't think you can go wrong with either plane! I know the 2.6 Yak is good plane also. But I have to tell you that the bang for the buck factor is pretty high with the Aviation Models Yak. It is huge for a 35% bird and the build quality is very good so far! Keeping in mind that both of these planes are arf's you can of course find some things to complain about here and there, but overall we are in this hobby at a very exciting time because there are simply sooo many killer planes to choose from and they just keep getting better and better! it is all just good!
I'll have more to post a little later on tonight. Back to the basement..............

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Finished up the cannister mounts taoday so I thought I would share! I made up a pair of aluminum brackets for the front mount out of 1" aluminum angle stock....simple and effective! For the top (or bottom i just used some 1/8" light ply and screwed them directly to the front former. This way I can easily remove the front cannister mount and maintain access to the landing gear bolts.
Oh yea...the mount's themselves are MTW and are avail through Desert Aircraft. I love em...makes my life considerabley easier!

A few of the rear mount. It really is not necessary to utilize two mounts, one positioned about 2/3 back would do the job. However you do risk cracked headers over time so I went with two. The downside of using two mounts is that you really have to take care that the rear one is positioned to maintain the proper angle between the header and cannister. Notice I raised the mount 1/8" for this purpose.

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Notice in the picture that the cannister and header are in alignment. It is very important to maintain that relationship. Also, when you install the cannisters..do NOT just center the mounts and glue in! The cannisters will be offset in the tunnel simply because the the engine is offset on the firewall. Bolt on the headers and cannisters and allow them to "float" in the tunnel...than place the mounts based in the cannister position. I realize that this is probably very obvious but felt is was worth mentioning anyway.......we all do things sometimes without enough thought (God knows I do) so ....I would rather give too much (maybe redundant) info than not enough!
Also...a quick side shot of the forward cannister mount bracket bolts. Just so you can see what I did.

Oh yea...for whom ever wanted to know the width of the cowl (like weeks ago[X(]) it is 13" across. I measured a while ago and just realized I never posted the info. Sorry about that. If anyone needs a pic just let me know.

Cloudshaker,
Let me think...I think I ordered a pair of 36" ext for the outboard wing servos, a pair of 18" for the inboard wing servos, one 18" for the throttle, and I am going to make the extensions going to the elevators. Now, I am also using a powerbox so I also have a few short ext to facilitate the removal of the wings....I don't want to be unplugging directly from the powerbox all the time. I hope that helps.
Oh yea, all the extensions are from AIRWILD. Those guys have been great with terrific customer support.

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Looking good Paul.
I am using the Powerbox too, so if you would like some pics of how i installed it let me know. I still need to make my extensions for the stab and do a few other things but should be ready to fly in another week or so. Can't wait.
I opted to use the standard mufflers instead of the cans for now (Santa got all my build money HaHa). But i'm thinking about mounting my smoke tank inside the cannister tunnel, under the fuel tank should make it easy to secure them both together.
Once again yours is looking good.

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
A buddy of mine and I ordered 35% yaks earlier this week. We are getting them on tuesday. I was wondering if the hinges are already glued in place because from the pics it looks that way. I also wanted to know if any of you are planning on baffeling your motors and if so can you later post pics of it... Thanks....

Baxternick,
The hinges are not glued in. But the good news is that everything is slotted and ready to go. As far as baffles go I do not think most guys are baffling this plane, but I honestly cannot say for sure.

The powerbox was about 3/4 to 1" too long to mount behind the wing tube, so as you can see, i made another mounting plate out of lite ply and added some lightning holes and just screwed it down to the rear of the cannister tunnel. Still need to clean up he install a little, but you get the idea. Pretty easy.

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Hey Lee,
I use the 40/24 SC12 (with servo matching) in my 3.3M Yak and Super Xtra......I am big fan of the powerbox. I truthfully haven't given much thought to the actual placement of the box. I may see if it is feasable to build a small plateform above the wing tube because the tank has to go where you have your box in my plane because I used the tunnel for the cannisters....oddly enough .
Oh yea..the box I am using is a brand new "mini" powerbox from Duralite called the Evo 40/16. I believe it is now up on the Duralite web site.

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Just going over a few of the previous posts and I neglected to mention that the specs in the manual for the engine offset work out quit well. measure 2 3/4" down from the top of the firewall to find the horizontal center. Measure over 3 3/4" from the Left and draw a horizontal line.......where the lines intersect in center of the crankshaft. Use these reference lines to measure from and everything works out nicely!

RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build
Hey guys....thought I would share a little more with you tonight. I found that the bottom of the engine box, which is approx 1/16 lite ply, was a little "flexy". Not really a problem but since that is where the throttle servo mounts I thought I would add a little stiffener to firm things up. I don't think it was really necessary but I just anal that way . Anyway, after I mounted the the throttle servo and "bolted" it to the bottom I was still not perfectly happy because I had a little rocking of the the throttle servo mount. This was with my just seeing how much "flex" was left. Well again....I am sure it would be perfectly fine as it was...but I decided to glue the mount in place and that did the trick for me. I made the push rod out of a small carbon rod with the threaded ends JB Welded in place. Just so everyone knows..the throttle push rod is not included with the kit but all the others are.
Here are a few pics....
