Default RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build

I have just ordered my first gasser and it is this 35% Yak based upon everything I have read. I am getting ready to order my DA 100 with a standard muffler. My question is, do I need any standoffs or anything else to mount the engine? If I need standoffs, what size do I need?

Thanks in advance,
Keith

Yes you will need standoffs. I think I used 3/4" long on it. That put the prop about an 1 3/8" out from the cowl. You want the prop out away from the cowl or you will lose thrust.

Absolutely correct, 3/4 inch standoffs will do you just fine, that's what I'm using on my SD 35% Yak, runs great with the DA 100 on it.

I didn't have to use any standoffs... According to Garret, the 35% Yak was designed for the 3W 106... I put the firewall in and bolted on the motor... You do have to trim a bit of the former / brace on the left side of the firewall for clearance with the cylinder... Without standoffs, the prop is about 1 1/2" from the front of the cowl... You will need to build some cowl ducting too for this setup...

I dumped my Yak last Saturday... Low, no airspeed, downwind and the motor coughs & dies... It did a nice face-plant from about 50'... Knocked out the firewall and broke all the formers at the TE of the wing... Already have the fuse fixed and new cowl ordered... Will be putting a BME 115 Extreme on it... Mine was way nose-heavy with the 3W 106... I had to move everything back and still add 6 oz of lead to the tailwheel to get it to balance the way I like it... I'm going to lose 1.5 lbs of nose weight and gain some power with the BME... Also thought about a ZDZ 160...

Here are some pics of the install...

sorry to here about the misshap but glad its repairable . whats up with the 3w 106 had it been giving you problems staying running? or going thru it`s break in stage? i just traded off my da 100 so i`am forced to go with the 3W/cs 106 . did you have all your gear includeing smoke pump aft of cg and still nose heavy? oh and on the ducting and opening for airflow did you just close off top and bottom of your cowl inlet so the air flow come across the heads? and open the squre at the exaust point. thanks again on your pics and input.

The 106 was well seasoned...More than 25 gallons through it... It has unexplicably died 5 times in the last 50 flights... No warning, no indication, it just, flat, dies... It's almost cost me this airframe more than once... I've sent it to A.I. for a checkup... The 106 pulled it around well, but I want stoopid power... Thus the BME 115...

My smoke pump was in front of the fuel tank in the motor box... The smoke tank was on CG in the pipe tunnel... All batteries at the TE of the wing... Weight on the tailwheel... I must qualify my comments about the airplane being nose heavy... I like my 3D airplanes to be tail heavy...

On the cowl ducting, yes, you need to block air flow into the top & bottom of the cowl opening and build a duct that forces air over the cylinders... There are several threads with examples & photos... Here's one:

Default RE: Aviation Models 35% Yak Build

It's so big that I never checked where the CG is in relation to the wing tube... I just put everything where it's supposed to go and flew it... With the batteries at the wing tube, it was way too nose heavy for me... I built a tray that mounted in front of the turtle deck under the canopy and put all the batteries there... It was better, but still not the way I liked it... I started adding weight the the tailwheel bracket until I got it where I liked it... Wound up with 6 oz on the tail... It is noticeably tail heavy, but flies "hands off" inverted...

Something's not quite right with my airframe... Not sure if this applies to everyone else's or not... With my setup, I have probably 6 - 8 clicks of up elevator trim (from neutral) to fly straight & level at half throttle... That's alot of up elevator trim... Inverted, it's hands off... No noticeable climb or descent on inverted 45 degree uplines... The motor is in the airframe straight... That much up elevator trim to fly straight & level indicates that either the CG is way off (nose heavy) or the incidence is off... It's odd, but it doesn't keep me awake at night... The airplane still flies awesome... If (when) I finally toast this one I'm going to get a SD 37.5% Yak in the Russian Thunder scheme...

Sounds like your stab incidences are off.Not surprisinig, mine are off a little also, not much as to rip apart the tail of the plane to fix, I'll fly it and see how bad it affects it.

I think you will end up with two rudder servos in this plane.

I think one would work for just normal flying, but I do not think one will give you enough control for 3D manuvers like knife edge and definitely not knife edge loops.

Mine did crack when cutting with scissors. I went ahead and glued it on the frame anyway. So far so good. Only has a few flights on it so far, but no further cracking.

Both of mine cracked too, but not too bad. It is pretty unnoticeable unless you are really looking hard.

Does anyone have an opinion about the best prop for 3D in this plane with a DA100 once the break-in is done. Curious about which prop will give the best thrust to weight and all around good 3D performance. Just received my plane but have not had a chance to look everything over yet. I'm excited and can't wait to get started.

Thanks in advance,
Keith

I have been flying mine with a fuchs 27x10 so far it's the best ,out of a P tip 27x10, and a menz.27x10. This weekend I will try a Vess 27A. I have heard that the Vess as a good prop. I will let you know .
