RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
Larry Sample of chief aircraft quoted me a price of $275.00 to ship to Philadelphia,pa.CRAZY
The problem with Chief is that they are in the middle of nowhere,Forward Air is 4hours away from them. You would think that if they want to sell these planes they would take enough orders and then have someone drive the crates to Forward Air to ship out.Chief has one of the nicest schemes for the yak,I guess they dont care if they sit on them for awhile due to high shipping cost!

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
I just ordered a red, white and black scheme from Chief today. I have a ZDZ 80RV on the shelf that will be going in it and I am planning on installing one of the new tuned canister mufflers on it from RC Showcase. Should have awesome power. Hopefully the AUW will be close to as advertised.

Greg, I was wondering if you got your engine box done yet or had any pictures without a manual and no lines to go by its hard to set up I really dont want to set the engine in and try to center it, in fact It doesnt look like I will get my engine until the end of the month. It will be a 3w-80 thanks for the help. Brian

I recieved my 33% Yak today, it wasn't supposed to arriver until friday, so it was a nice surprise. First I'll comment on the packing. Unbelievable! The best job of packing a plane I have ever seen.
As for the plane, I have only opened one box, the wing. I'm impressed, workmanship on this wing is as good or better than any ARF I have ever seen. I have more boxes to open. all I can say is WOW.

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
I mounted my firewall so that it would fit flush with the floor of the motor box.
I had to trim two tabs from the motor box floor and a small amount of the engine
box sides in order to mount the L brackets the way I did. I did not change the amount
of right thrust in the process. The distance from the center of my firewall to the front
edge of the cowl is 5 3/4 inches. I didn't have the amount of engine offset information.
Sammy is busy out of town, so I did my own calculations and came up with .26 inches
of offset to the left of the firewall center when you are facing away from the plane. Turns
out that this is the same as on the 37%. In the 37% manual they also recommend .16
inches of offset down from the firewall center. Once I new the offsets, I traced the shape
of the 3W mounting bracket on a piece of paper to find its center and then placed the
center of the paper onto the center of the engine offset and marked where the bolts holes
need to be drilled for the engine mounting bracket. Finding the center of the firewall and
marking the offset is easier before you install it to the motorbox. Since the .26 inches is from
my own calculations, do not take it as gospel. But if the right thrust is the same as on the 37%
then the offset should be about the same. The mounting bracket makes the installation of the
motor much easier.
Another thing that I did was double the thickness of the firewall. This was not necessary, but
I sometimes do this for peace of mind. Once the firewall was marked and drilled for the engine
mounting bracket, I epoxied the firewall onto the motorbox sides and floor. When it dried, I
reinforced the motorbox installation with the L brackets using epoxy and small machine screws
that I picked up from the hardware store. In the photographs the engine mounting plate is only
trial fitted. The engine must be mounted on the bracket first before it is secured to the firewall.
I called AI and he could not give me a definite date on when my engine will arrive. He said
it could be as much as two weeks away. So what I might do is remove the engine from my
WH extra (which hasn't been used yet) and place it on the Yak since I want to get the yak
flying first.
The only other thing I need to do is cut a hole in the middle of the firewall big enough so that
the carburetor will fit through. I should have done this before I mounted the firewall to the
engine box [:@].

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
Any body using a ZDZ80RV? please post some pictures when you have it installed. I have the 30% with a ZDZ50 and it flies very good. Not for 3-D because the plane weights so much, but on the 33% it seems that they have just down-scaled the 37.5% and as I have read, they are a bit different in design, they are lighter than the 30, 35 and 40% in proportions. Am I correct? are these new ARF´s better built? I will be looking at this thread for that info, I have that ZDZ80 waiting for a new home. Thanks
John

juanes,
What 30% are you flying with the ZDZ 50? The ZDZ 80 will be a good match for the 33% Yak with
a projected weight under 21 lbs.

John, I weighed everything last night, right down to the 10th of an ounce.
The entire kit, everything that comes in the box which includes a 1/2 pound spinner! comes to 228 ounces. Thats 14 1/4 pounds. Add your engine, prop, electronics, equipment to that, and you can find your finished weight. I figured right at 22 pounds. I think thats about the same as columbo figured.
I've already figured out how much weight can be saved with carbon fiber landing gear, stabilizer and wing tube, lite tires, and a lite TT spinner.
You'll be able to nock off about 20 ounces.

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
Thanks Greg, Thanks John.
I´m flying the 30% TOC1 Yak 54, the plane came out at 18 pounds and 4 ounces, it does hover but almost at full throttle, still breaking the engine in so I hope it gets better as I put more fuel through it. The weights you guys gave me for that 33% are great for the ZDZ80. Now I´ll just have to come up with the juice to place the order and I´ll post here whem I´m building.
Thanks for the info guys!!!

How did you get your 30% to weigh 18 pounds? what do you have in there, a car battery? My EF Yak with a Da 50, stock exhaust and one 4800 Froemco lipo came in ar 15 pounds 4 ounces

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
All the 30% yaks A.M. are coming in around 18 lbs mine was under 18 until I changed to a Evo 58 now its 18 lbs 8 oz, and I have been using CF gear, CF spinner, Fromeco batts and regs for rx and ign, the entire time. To be honest with you I have flown the EF also, and I can tell little difference between the two but my toc is nearly a year old now...maybe the new ones are lighter.

RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread
Thanks for all of the useful info on this thread. I will be pulling my ZDZ80RV out of my QQ 85" Yak and putting in the 33% I'm picking up from Gene @ TBM tomorrow. I will be using Hitec 5955TG servos all around, 3 2800mah TBM Liion batteries, MPI switches w/regulators, CF 3 blade Mejzlik 23/10 w/4" Pete's CF spinner and CF landing gear and tubes when they become available. This setup is awesome in my QQ 85" but it is a little overkill so I'm going to put my BME 50 in the QQ and the 80 in the 33%. I saw the plane today at Gene's and the quality and finish is excellent as was the packing. A friend of mine just finished a 30% from Chief in the red/black scheme and I was so impressed that I bought the larger one. I would like to see any pictures of the ZDZ80RV installation if anyone has them.
Thanks,
Butch
