Default How to strengthen landing gear on a 1/4 scale GP PW?

Hello everyone,

I recently crashed my Great Planes PW 1/4 scale extra300, and all the front part was destroyed and the landing gear was expanded and softened. I rebuild the plane and now it weighs in at 20 pounds. The landing gear was suffering before, and now with this much extra weighed I'm sure it is not going to take it.

I also know that a lot of the guys are buying the CF gears, but because I live outside the USA I'm not in a position to order online. So I was wondering if you kind gentleman's could perhaps suggest some kind of a method to strengthen the landing gear without loosing too much flexibility.

Could I perhaps try something like the picture below? or probably wrap a layer of fiberglass around the landing gear? any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanking you all in advance,

Mohammad Reza.

I don't mean to sound rude here, but you want to consider if a 25% Patty Wagstaff weighing in at 20lbs is worth saving. The flight charistics are not going to be very good. However....if you so decide to keep it you could always try to run multi strands of kevlar from the top on one side of the gear "near the fuse" to a lower spot on the gear on the opposite side. Be sure to do this on both sides. It would help keep the gear from spreading, but it could also put more stress on that lower mounting point depending on your landings.

Thanks again neo and rdb127 for your posts.

This plane had a over sized engine for the airframe to do 3D stuff, so now that it is heavier, I have to just fly sport or IMAC style so yes it will fly OK but not 3D anymore.

I don't know where to find these strands of Kevlar here in my country, but I think what you guys suggested is about all that can be done to this, I will do as you suggested but using normal strong steel wires to weld it as you have described.

Thanks again.

What I did was use 3/16 piano wire bent into the same shape as the flat alum landing gear. You hold it in place by using 3/16 wheel collars as shown in the pictures below ( I hope). The 3/16 wire is of course, is one continous piece from left to right. Drill holes in the alum landing gear as shown, then put allen head screws thru and into the wheel collars. Adjust the lenght of the screws so that they tighten down on the music wire and the gear evenly.
