Default Carden 260

I was chewing up the Comp Arf 260 thread with questions to Quist about his 260 setup. So I thought it would be more appropriate to start its own thread.

Quist do you have any pictures of that 1080 KS pipe install in your plane?

Thx

Thanks for the pics. You really are making progress. I like the red!

So it sounds like the 1080's are a good comprimise. I've flown the MTW 110's and although they are VERY quiet, I see no static RPM increase. When watching Glizellis's plane at Tucson on 1090's (I think) it seemed powerful but very pipey (on/off non linear throttle response).

All of these mufflers have a spot which it jumps on the power. Some are worse then others and header length will come into play. My setup comes on the pipe around 1/2 throttle, but the nice thing about this setup is there is no dead spot before it comes on the pipe.

Also remember that John's PL Prod extra is a very big and heavy plane. He needed those pipes. Chip had to put them into his also to get power. Andrew Jesky will be flying that plane this year.

One thing to remember. I am a straight line flyer, no 3d with my contest plane. I have no frame of reference for your throttle curve.

Do you think you will be lacking power? Most of the 260's have been coming out at 37.5 or under with pipes.

Q,

I'm not "worried" about power. I'm just investigating to get the best setup. I'm flying the DA with the MTW 110's in the QQ Yak and it seems really linear, but if I could get another pipe setup that gave me more power and kept a good throttle response, then sure!

I've heard the Greeves are really linear and give about 150 rpm boost, but they are really long!

Thanks,
Joe

If you are going to Vegas I will let you fly my 330. The 260 wont fly until after that contest.

You might also talk to Mark Doan, his mufflers are working very well..They seem to ve the same power as my 1080 pipes.

I talked to Pete Goldsmith yesterday and he was very impressed with the Greeves Pipes he saw running at the JR Challenge.

How do you think those would fit in the airframe? They are long and skinny.

It should not be a problem. With the 260 having a short hatch, the pipe tunnel is going end about 5' behind the hatch.

Joe,

The Greves should fit in the Carden. They drop right in on the Dalton. They are long, but very thin.

Joe, I meant 5 inches not feet.

Jonathon, I am almost done covering. I have the top of one wing left and then the trim on the fuse. I swore I would never use Monokote again after my 330. This plane is done in Ultracote, it is so much easier to work with. It lays out well, no bubbling. I now know why Brian Hueffmeier charges extra to cover with monokote.

TQ

TQ,

Did you do the rudder servos in the tail ala Hueffy? If so what size *** turnbuckles?

Hey Joe,

Nope, I won't be making Bakersfield. Between being out of the country and weather I haven't been out flying in about 1 month. I'm beyond "rusty". I plan on going out to RRCC this weekend though, weather permitting. It should be amusing to see how far off I am.

Brian, thanks

Joe, My rudder linkage is 6.5" so it will take a 5.5 -5.75 turnbuckle.

Thanks but, on the top I just copied McConville's scheme and changed the yellow to Red. He had a red version on a Troy built 260. The bottom of the wings were stolen from QQ I changed the color. It is very difficult to truely have an original scheme that looks good. Even the wings on my 330 that I had many compliments on were a derivation of some small china arf I saw on the internet.

Borrowing from the best!! It turned out awesome!!

I really like the painted motor box and the speckled radio compartment. You are approaching the status of a professional Carden builder.

Keep the pics coming. I'm sure everyone wants to see the radio equipment installation too.

Later,

Dean
