Aeroworks vs Aviation Models YAK54 / Da 50 vs 3W 55i questions
Hi Chaps,
I don't want to start WW3 but I am very interested to hear peoples opinions on the advantages of the Aeroworks 85" YAK54 vs the Aviation Models 87" version of the same plane ? Also what do people think is the best engine for these models ? I hear great things about the DA 50 but the 3W 55i also gets good reviews, has anyone tried both and have a definite preference ? I'd be looking for 3D performance in one or the other of these airframes.
Many thanks, and remember "no kicking, no biting, no scratching, no gouging" :-)

RE: Aeroworks vs Aviation Models YAK54 / Da 50 vs 3W 55i questions
They will both weigh about the same (around 17 pounds) and both will fly well. The advantage to the Aeroworks is that it is a QB and comes pre-hinged, canopy, landing gear, wheelpants, and cowl are all premounted and is drop-in cannister ready and cost the same as the AM Yak. The AM Yak is a regular ARF, and an advantage, or disadvantage (depending on how you look at it) is that you get to determine your firewall location. It seems like a disadvantage at first, but in actuality, it is a way more solid method of mounting the engine, because you can space the firewall forward enough to where you don't need standoffs. This results in less engine-shake. It will take a good 10 hours more to get it finished than the QB, though, and is about the same price.

17 pounds my foot, you'll be lucky if the Aviaiton Models comes in at 19 pounds with the DA-50 and the lightest gear you can find !! QQ Yak is at least 2 pounds lighter and is better built. Aviation Models has issues with gear mount also.

Agree with BCG the new QQ 86" Yak will be the one to beat, it will be lighter that the present QQ 85" so I am lead to belive and my 85" weighs 15.5lb with a MVVS 45 in it, keep the wing loading low if you want the best 3D performance.
I now have a MVVS 58 pro in my 85" and its a 3D extream machine, I may have to go back to the 45 to calm things down a bit, the vertical is unbalivable.

OK, don't hate me, but here is what I have witnessed and experienced. TOC-EXTREME (Aviation Models) Yaks are lighter than the AW (19-20). TOC Yaks are coming in at 16-17 lbs with a DA50 and smoke, and on NMHi batteries. As for 3W, it is the only way I would go, or recommend. The power is more, it does weigh a little more, but they are more responsive, more reliable, and hae better transition. I have seen too many DA's die for no reason and have to go back to the factory. Although they do have great service, but so does Cactus Aviation. Sorry, I don't mean to offend, but I am just sharing my knowledge.

I 2nd that Racin Jason.
I got a DA50 now and can do just about every move under the sun and the thing dies on me on the 5th flight.
TOC 1 Yak54 16lb flew like a champ until it died
So DA's are off my purchasing list.
When you fly extreme and on the deck you cant afford to have an hiccup from an engine.
Who wants to fly in circles for a few gallons to get it broke into it, I dont.
Not saying anything bad about DA except they are off my purchasing list.
PS. This post will probably be removed from RCU because most of them do for speaking my mind.

I weighed mine and it weighed in at 16lbs even.
Smoke system, DA 50, carbon fiber gear, spinner.
Flys light.
It's a heck of a plane.

my AM yak weights 17.5lbs with a mvvs/evo 58 - i stripped the original purple covering and tried to get it as light as possible with the heavy engine - it now flies great with real power to spare.

17# 5 oz for my Aeroworks QB Yak 50cc. No carbon fiber, with spinner, with wheel pants, with gear plate reinforcement. DA50, stock muffler, Vess 23A prop, 5955's all the way around with 5625 on throttle, two TBM 2400 LiIon packs, MPI switches. Flies great. Hovers around 1/2 throttle. EASY build.

I know aeroworks has a yak sticker on the side of their plane, but thats about the only way you would know it's called a Yak. I real Yak has a rounded fusalage, just like the AM yak. Aeroworks built a cheap plane with flat side and called it a yak. It actually would be better off with an extra sticker on the side.

Hey Van get a new scale.
New 3W 55, pitts muff, carbon gear front and back, no pilot, no smoke, lithium ion batteries and it was 18 1/2 lbs.

T. Bob, they were weighed on digital scales that are hooked to a computer, ask racinjason about the scales they are his and since he is a field / sales rep for TOC 1 / Aviation Models /Extreme Aviation / SD Models and he weighed it for me I believe its right.

RE: Aeroworks vs Aviation Models YAK54 / Da 50 vs 3W 55i questions
My AM yak with a Evolution 58, fromeco batts and regs, TNT aluminum gear, and 8411's all the way around. no spinner, or pants weighed just under 18 pounds with no real effort to save weight.
Also I have been researching a replacement for the 58, and from the distributors site a 3W 55 is 67oz, Evo 58 is 65oz, and a ZDZ 80 is 68oz. As these are the "advertised weights" I do not know the accuracy or what all the weight includes ie ignition, standoffs....etc. but it certainly makes the 80 very tempting on paper.

Greyhoundman how do you like the Evolution 58, Have you had any issues with it like difficulty starting , ect.??I am putting together a AM yak 30% and have heard that you need a little heavier motor up front for balance purposes. I was going with Kroma 50 or a 3 lb motor but i cant see doing that if i need to add some weight up front for cg purpose. I will using Nimh batts stock tube and gear.
