I have received my B/Y version of this Yak and have premounted the DA-50
That I intend to fly it with. I used some 3" standoffs I had on hand, as this was
previously stated as being okay. I am not sure I want the motor to be that far
out as to not have enough cowling to attach to the fuselage. Soooo.. for those
of you who also are using the DA-50, did any of you use shorter than 3" standoffs
and where did you get them? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I just mounted my DA-50 with 2.5" standoffs along with 1/4 inch aircraft ply spacers that I made out of a 1 1/4 hole saw. I have not mounted the cowl yet but when I test fitted the cowl without the 1/4 spacers I think it was about 3/4 of an inch space between the cowl and backplate of spinner with the cowl at recommended 3/4' beyond F1. So I think with the 1/4' spacer I should be about an inch between cowl and prop. You should be able to get the standoffs from DA or Troy built models. I hope this helps.

Hey guys, I am sunburnt.

I found that my FAUP 1950 on this plane will last for 1 hour and 15 minutes to 6.05 v and my 4 cell 1450 is at 5.1 by then. THe cool part is I pop out the batteries and send in fresh ones for another hour or more as both batteries are under the canopy and come right out with the velcro release.

I spent over a gallon on that plane today....It truly presents and handles about like a 33% plane with short wings.

2 minutes into the maiden one of the automotive hose clamps holding the header and pipe attaches came loose. I could not get the engine to idle low enough to get a landing. After 3 wheel landings the third one stayed on long enough to slow it down for a stop.

I had trials and tribulations with the G-62 and pipe. The Vess 22B would pull 7700 rpm but was way flat in the middle.(it never sang)

The NX-23x8 did pull better but was still flat in the middle. 7000 was tops for that prop, From 1/4 to a 1/2 throttle you are waitng for something to happen, it was not linerar.(it never sang)

Now the Vess 23A...WOW. From 3/8 throttle on it was pinging the pipe. The baffle btw is at 17.5 and the header is a DA 25mm drop question mark. At full power it was a singing hard.

When you punch out, you really punch out with this power. It lunges much more than my DA-50 with 10 gallons and a side dump muffler on another 16 lb plane. Who want to vertical drag race with me? Bring your pink slip[>:]

On the ground we saw 7400 rpm on the Vess 23A and after 5 seconds it was 7350. Now none of the prop caclualtors, ( I like Pe Reivers) can dial in a Vess yet. But if your Mej. 23x8 was turning this RPM you would be getting over 34 pounds of thrust on a plane weighing 17 lb with fuel and that my friends is 2 to one power.

The plane flys great and it presents and feels is just like the Aviation Models 33% Yak, only with more acceleration on the climb. In the air it looks funny as you expect the wings should be longer. But now when I look at the 33% flying it looks funny like the wings are too long.

I took lots of bumps in the grass and the plane has no inclination to nose over what so ever. The AM CF gear looks good on this plane and performs very well.

By the end of the day I was more confortable with the low knife edge passes more so than any previous gasser. My rolling circles with this plane make me actually appear to know what I am doing.

Again, thanks to Chris Hinson and Mike Hall for designing such a great plane.

Oh and there has to be one negative. The big G-62 shakes a lot on the ground at idle. I dont know if it was that or what, but the back lip of my canopy cracked after the second flight. The crack was a good inch long starting from the bottom right corner of the canopy where it hangs over the turtle deck. I have it taped for the rest of the day but need to address it.

tks 4 the flight report, sounds like you will be up to 10 gallons very soon on this bird. Yeah that is my kind of bird. I have to go to the post office and sign for something tomorrow hopefully its the header or c/f pipe deal. Heck brison use to have that on their site about planes being unlimted with a Brison 3.2 up to 18lbs so the DA should not even be an conversation deal about that. I just posted that because this build thread has seen so much talk about the plane being too heavy or the DA not being enough power. Sometimes you have to draw a picture for the detractors out there.

Rear bottom? You mean for the pipe? I didn't cut out anything but what the manual said to for the pipe and didn't touch my cowl.

No not for the pipe. For to air to exit fuse that is inbound from propwash. Often done on small electrics planes to create air flow through fuse so bats and motors get air flow passing over them.

No, you don't need to do that. Only place on the fuse you would cut out would be the pipe tunnel if putting one in, if not, just leave everything as is.

chris you have any "demo" ones put together you can bring to tucson with you? i'll buy one from ya [sm=wink_smile.gif], let you fly at the timpa field, thats my new flying site here, its where they hold the shootout in the fall, nicer runway then what i am used to btw, should be lots of fun...heading out now for my 2nd day there, just need another yak in my hanger now!!!!

My Yak is finally all here and... WOW, you could put your whole head inside the cowl, I'm sure a 50cc engine will fit.

I've got boxes from all over and I opened one of the DA boxes, KS 1060 tuned pipe. That thing is big enough to match the Yak. I compared the weight to my bisson wrap around muffler (9.5 oz.) to the pipe (10.3 oz.) . Vess 23A props look neat and the only thing wrong with the DA after my last "landing" ( straight in, in a cow pie infested field) was a slightly out of round prop shaft extension.

Still waiting on CF LG, ti axles, wheels, kill switch, CF spinner and the aluminum header. I picked up some regulaters and switches from Fromco and am using li-po's. A 1320 on the ignition and a couple of 2100's for the rx/servos. 5 - 5955 & 1- 5965 with SWB arms. Hope mine turns out somewhere near rdb's weight.
