Charles, Is it necessary to adjust the exhaust length when using a tuned pipe? I have a DL 55 and would like to go with the ES Pipe they make for a 55 to 60 cc engine.

Thomas,
Congrats on your Yak. Is it a new plane you are building or a pre-flown one?
I would recommend an ES composites pipe. It weighs about 6oz less than an RE-2 or 1060 and performs great on a DA 50. Most of that weight is behind the CG also. You are correct a about the climbing inverted being a cg issue. The stabs should be zero to the canopy deck. It's normal to have a little up trim and its nothing to worry about. The motor spacing works out the best with 2.5'' standoffs.

I just bought the Russian Thunder 88'' Yak 54 yesterday have a DA 50 for it and plan on using a tuned pipe not sure which one just yet.
The Hobby shop owner suggested that I use 3'' stand offs and modify the elevator stab to have -1 degree of indication said it was tail heavy with DA 50 and tuned pipe and it had a tendency to climb on inverted flight without this modification. Has anyone changed the elevator stab indication? It actually sounds like a CG issue to me.
This is my first 50CC gaser and bigest plane so far have been flying a brushless 70'' AJ Slick. I want to make sure I do this one right any information would be greatly appreciated.

Charles, Thanks for the help. The DA web site notes that the header for the KS 1060 Tuned Pipe should be 12 " depending on altitude, climate and prop size. This information is not available through DLE; not surprised. I know with glow engines you tune the pipe by adjusting the header length. Any advise would be appreciated.

One more question what prop size would you recommend for the DA 50 and ES composite pipe?

I would recommend a Vess 23B. I've run a 23A and it works great but the 23B will give you a little more top end and the DA with ES pipe has plenty of power to swing it. If you want a quieter prop a 23x8 Mej. is a good choice. I found the midrange a little harder to manage with the 23x8. They tach very close to the same but after running both for a while you can tell the Vess is a little easier to manage in a torque roll/hover. A 22x10 works great if you want to go fast. The 22x10 is very smooth 3ding but it doesn't have the pull out torque of the 23's.
Here is a video of two planes with DA's and ES pipes. My EDGE has the 23B and my friends Slick has the 23A.

Joe,
Thanks. I for sure know my spinner weights more. It is an unlightened tru-turn spinner. I'm going to check my CG later this evening after work and see where it is. I may end up moving one of my receiver packs to a location similar to where your receiver is.

Thanks alot Charles, I may start out with the stock exhaust and move up later. This is my first 30% and yours looks like it flies great with the stock DA set up.

Oh yeah. No problem. Looks like the 7955 except steel gears instead of titanium. Also it's rated high voltage (unofficially so is the 7955).

Well, I finally got a decent day of flying in on Monday. It has been way to long. Here are a few pics. I even did my own form of "LG springiness testing"

Hey Jeff. Good to hear from you. I was just coming here to post a link to a video and saw all your cool pic's. I like the picture of the Yak in your sun glasses. Very cool.
This is one a friend at the field put together. Pretty funny. I did NOT pick the music.

Great video. I would expect to see a link from Extremes web site. Not crazy about the music, but otherwise professional and one of best I have seen.

RE: Extreme Flight 88
lol..thanks guys. The guy that did the video, Paul, probably spent a lot of time doing the editing. I have no idea how to do all those effects. I'd kind of like to get my hands on the raw video. I guess it was like 13 minutes. I might ask him to split it in two and put it on Youtube with just the actual sound. There was a lot more flying in the full video he took. I remember some of the things we were saying while I was flying were kind of funny too. "Whoa that was close !!!" etc etc

Yeah the last picture the plane is going straight and all the surfaces are fully deflected. How do you do that Jeff?

Now, on to your question about that picture...It's a magic flight condition/radio program that I am working on called "ignr-physx". [:-] I have it programmed on my aux2 switch. Basically, the plane thinks that it is flying in a vacuum & you can move the surfaces all you want without altering course. [:-][:-][:-]
Seriously though, it is just a fast shutter speed taking multiple shots though various maneuvers. We just got lucky with the timing on that one.
