Aeroworks 29% Edge and a Taurus 3.2
Hey Guys,
I am currently putting together an Aeroworks 29% Edge and I am trying to put my Taurus 3.2 on the nose. I am having a problem with the Pitts style muffler interfering with the firewall. I would like to know if anyone has had experience with this setup?
Any Pix???
Thanks,
Curt

I have this exact setup on mine, I took the muffler down to my local welding shop. had them trim off the back of the muffler where it hits the firewall and reweld a plate back on.
didn't loose any rpm. sure was alot quicker.

Good Idea !
Hey 2lo,
I really like that idea, is there a way you could post a pix of your set up?
And how do you like the overall engine/ plane combo?
Thanks,
Curt

pitts muffler
these pictures are after the firewall was ripped out due to a prop
breaking while in the air, and switching from another engine.
So after beefing up the firewall, I really didn't want to rebuild the firewall again.

standoffs
I just took my time and ground each one down at a time, to achieve the proper length.
just remember to figure in the amount of off center to left for the amount of right thrust you are using.
I also added about a half degree of up thrust to help with harriers.
If you check in the new products announcements section there are several people in there making standoffs.

2lo, Outflying
Did you happen to notice how heavy you balsa was for the wing sheeting?. My ranges form 18 g to 33 g!! Not too many 18's in the kit, but a lot of 25g sheets. Seems like all contest grade is not being shipped!

wing sheeting
I did notice that there were a few lighter sheets than others, for now I am not worried about it. From all I have heard, this bird still flies great!

Sheeting
didn't notice much variance in the sheeting when building, but thats been a while, built the kit back in october. didn't get to fly it till first of the year.
finally got a good engine in her just got some long servo arms and WOW. menz S 22x8 seems perfect combo.
got about 40 flights on it after today.
This thing is soooooo sweet!

Cowl
Hey 2Lo,
Could you post a couple of pix of your cowl (how you cut it out for the Taurus). Would there be anything you would do differently about cutting it out? Mine is about ready to go under the knife!
Thanks,
Curt

Muffler clearance?
I just finished building my second AW 29% Edge and used the Brison 3.2 on both. I also used the J&A pitts PEACEKEEPER muffler.
On my first one, all I had to do was slightly bevel the edge of the engine box ply to allow for the 1/8" clearance.
On my second, I cleared no problem.
Looks like your engine is pretty close to your mounting box.
Here's a photo of my first one.

Naaaa, nothing special, just the the fact that what ever the cowl touches, it will rub a hole in it even metal. i.e. muffler. I'd take some pics but this is the second engine it looks a little narly. the nice thing about the taurus though is the fact that I only have to drill one little hole to gain access to the needles. still reach through the air inlet opening and shut choke. got a second cowl coming need to reshoot paint any way. I did put two more mounting screws in the top though. I'll take some pics when I get the new cowl on and some ghraphics put on.
I still need to make mount for the muffler to the engine mount. didn't even know it was suppossed to have one till i read one of hansens thread saying know one use a mount for their muffler.
Looked like a conveniant spot for the ground strap to me .
Well just got another 5 flights in today, learned what it took to get it to wing tip spin (knife edge spin) entering it is the trick.
this looks so cool, never had a plane that would do this.
gotta have some altitude though it comes down fast.
Waterfalls are neat too, Wall to a TR to a waterfall back to TR
shoot up to a inverted flat then a knife edge spin to harrier.
This plane kicks ***** I'm about half tempted to sell my others and get another. I'm sure one of these days I'll push it past the edge and have too I just want the next one to be ready to go!
Going to put ghraphics on soon

2lo,
That's a nice set-up, but I think sooner or later you are in for some trouble.
I noticed that your ground wire is attached to the muffler. If your muffler ever vibrates a little loose, (mine has) if you use a gasket, or if the oil & varnish build up between the muffler & cylinder you will loose your ground. I think it's a better idea to clamp it to the spark plug or attach to the case.

ignition ground
Wings thanks for the heads up, I agree that grounding the shield to the case would be the best thing. and as I also stated that I need to install a bracket for the end of the muffler.
But I do not use a gasket. I use a thin bead of J B WELD for a gasket, no leaks, no oil varnish to get inbetween the exh. and cyl.
Have never experienced a loose condition, Yet I can still remove the exh when neccessary.
after past experience, I will not use a clamp around the plug,
it works, but just messes up the braided strap.

Aeroworks Edge 29% and Taurus 52
I ordered the AW 29% edge kit on Monday and plan on putting my Taurus 52 in it as well. Did you use a pull-pull rudder set up with the Taurus 52 and if so, did you have any problems balancing the plan. I know a lot of people use two servos for the elavators installed in the rear of the plane to offset the additional weight of the heavier gas engines.
Thanks

Aeroworks 29% Edge and a Taurus 3.2
Krayzc,
Does this plane require TWO 8411's on the rudder? I am in the process of building one now, and most things I read only require one. I am running it at 5. 6 volts, which I hope will be plenty of power.
Dtrain. Standard servos will not fit in the stabilizer very well unless you let them stick out quite a bit. I went with JR midsize digitals. If you kit was not in stock and AW has to cut the wings, ask them for the foam piece that goes in the wing where they cut the tube. I you would like, send me a email and I can give you a call during the day with some other helpful hints.

Aeroworks 29% Edge and a Taurus 3.2
the edge will knife edge with one 8411 but i never felt it was very strong so i recently removed that deal and installed a hitec 5735. I did this so that i would have better power to pull out of a knife edge loop. I was running 6 volts the entire time i have been flying the edge. I rebuiild the rudder larger when i did the servo swap out. I have the flat tail version and i hear the airfoil version rudder is more effective than my version.

I have one 8411 on mine on 6v and although it does pretty good with only one but it would benifit from 2. The rudder on this plane is almost identical in size with a 35% edge so its very effective and needs power
