    Hi Leon, Im not that keen on the cans and headers I have either. They are the original ones and are pretty averagely made. The headers do really look like crap. One of mine was badly damaged when it was freighted over. I haven't run mine as yet but was also looking for some other options. Any ideas on brand options?

    Yeah there seems to be a bit of work in the wings - Im about to start on the bottoms. What glue have you been using for assembly? Obviously epoxy were required but for the bulk of rib work etc I was thinking of just using aliphatic resin. Thoughts?

    Pushing on... back on the fuse. Doing a fair bit of strengthening as we go. Plan to use a fair bit of carbon to give this beast a bit of longevity. Not to take anything away form EMBW, the kit is very well engineered but this is the part I enjoy I suppose. Finsihing fin and rudder at present and working on the glass cocpit coaming and rear turtledeck.

    Its taking a while but my most enjoyable build for a while. A few pics attached.

    Anyone have any thoughts on Koverall vs Solartex. I'm thinking Koverall would be stucturally stronger, but I find solartex really easy to apply. Anyones opinion appreciated. Thanks.

    Decided on Stits Lite. I think it will add a lot of structural integrity. Had the DVD from the Stits lads and it seems easy to apply and a great system. Building this thing to last for a while vs super light. Im sure it will still perform well with all the power and wing area.

    Some updates... done the rear turtle deck, strengthened with a few extra balsa spars. Also fitted the cabane support which has come up good. I was concerned about how to get the thing on somewhat square but it came together well. The supplied jig and some vertical support with a few measurements here and there and all was good. Not keen on the big squeeze on the bottom cabane tubes. Im going to insert some 5mm aluminum in the base of the tubes to squeeze up against. Also think this will seat the tubes down on the ply plates a little better.

    This kit is fantastic! Everything fits amazingly well. A small amount of filler req to fair the side formers into the front turtle deck bulkheads and ready to sheet. Now on a mission to complete the tail surfaces to be able to fit the rear tubes in place. Keen to get something finished. I have all parts of the model, except thing wings in some state of completion. I have made a pact to keep to wings in the box until the rear end is complete. Then I plan build the bottom wings first to fit the fuse properly.

    Finished the cabanes. Added some 5mm plate aluminum inside the tubes. I really wasn't keen on squeezing the tubes flat. It didn't feel structurally that sound. And after reading that the Carden Aircraft guys lost their prototype Ultimate due to a cabane giving way I was keen for something real solid. Apparently theirs was moving round resulting in all 4 panels coming off the fuse. The model looked amazing and I'm sure in true Carden style they'll come back with a great solution.     Also spent some time removing the waste and finishing the fiberglass cockpit surround. This was a bit of an effort to be honest but its definitely now starting to look like a Pitts.

    A bit of action. Going with hollow 4mm carbon stringers instead of the liteply. These will have 3mm square hardwood on top of them soon. Done the cockpit coaming mounts - 3mm cap screws with some nice blind nuts out of Singapore hobbies. Spent some time on some of the key glue joints - done some fillets with epoxy, some masking tape with glue powder and a bit of BVM glass fibre.

    Been working on the design of the engine mount/box. Will be 1/4 aircraft ply, carbon and glass. Not that keen on the version in the kit. t was a simple box made from 1/8 lite ply. I just couldnt see last lasting lasting very long with a 212cc engine sitting on the front.

    Finishing up the rest of the tail surfaces at the moment. Rudder and one 1 elevator to finish. I am thinking of doing some of the Wolf Aircraft mods. A stinker type rudder shape, and the wolf style wing tip shape. I think it makes the classic Pitts shape just a little more modern without loosing the classic lines. Also think the spring undercarriage in the kit vs the original PItts version goes a long way towards this.

    See a few shots of the Wolf Aircraft mods attached.

    My 1/2 scale full pilot has just left from Germany. One of Axel's special. Looking forward to seeing this.

    Nice built you have,I have the 47% 1/2.1 scale version,mine is with scale aileron and I fly it just for fun with big loops and rolls. I have a ZDZ 120 in mine,it weights 17,5 Kg. so there is plenty of power.
    I also have a pilot from Axel in Germany very realistic and it gives the model the last touch I think.

    Good luck with yours you will be rewarded with a very well flying plane.

    tobba - how are you making those carbon horns? you just purchased some plate and dremeled it out? Did u trace out an outline and just cut through it? what size plate are using? 1/8" thick?

    Gidday. Best place Ive found for the carbon plate is 'The Composite Store' - www.cstsales.com

    I have used the .0300 plate. This is just under 1/8 - about 2.5mm in my language. The SKU code on the site is C4080. There a many thicknesses to choose from.

    I use a square, a circle guide and a metal scriber to mark the shapes then roughly cut out with a fine blade on the bandsaw. Then finish with a disc sander and Dremel. A bit of elbow grease but they come up great. Best part is you can make any size you need. A few lightening holes make them look flash. The plate is incredibly strong - don't go for the accent plate - It look pretty but seems to be half the strength.

    Little tip - if you are going to do the sandwich idea with ball links like mine, cut two pieces roughy and sandwich them together with thin double sided tape or 3M spray glue. Draw the horn up on one side only and drill the mounting and ball link holes first carefully. As long as you get the holes accurate the rest is just about looking flash - the geometry will be perfect.

    Hi Henrik.

    That is an awesome model - superb effort!

    I had seen a few images of your model online and the photo of you and your pilot was what inspired me to buy one from Axel. So thank you very much for that... I think thank you??, it was rather expensive! But I do agree I think it is the finishing touch to a scale model.

    I am looking to do a similar build to you. I plan to fly the model just for fun. Nice big aero's with a nice big model but I want it to look pretty scale. Maybe not quite as scale as yours and I'm planning a few changes to the tip and rudder shape.

    Pushing on. Fin complete and installed. Almost finished all surfaces and will move to the wings to allow me to mate bottom wings and complete the front end of the fuse. Come up with a jig to rout out slots for hinges. A solve here had me stumped or a while. Im suing Sig XX hinges and running one wire the full length of the surface and fix at each end. Will post a few images soon for anyone who's interested. Pilot in place is starting to look good. Pics soon.

    I am on the verge of purchasing one of these kits but am extremely intimidated by the fact that the kit doesn't come with instructions in English. Is it that much of a problem for Modellbau to put out some English instructions? I am not much of a builder but I don't care for all the ARF's out there these days. I just don't want to spend 2 grand on a kit and not be able to complete it.

    Anyway, please continue posting Tobba. Beautiful job! I want to glean as much information as I can from everybody who has built these planes.

    Hi there.

    I agree with you... you really would think with the caliber of this model and the cost it was worth a set of English instructions.

    This is one model though were the saying 'a picture is worth a thousand words' sings very true. To be honest there is no need for instructions, there would be over 200 photos on the supplied CD and they make life easy. I have been through the model and there is nothing tricky to be concerned about. The model is large and obviously there are more than the usual number of wings to build, but really it is quite simple. The kit is about as good as it gets I believe. The glass is typical German quality, the cabane assembly is a piece of art, the wood is first class and the accessories are very complete.

    One thing to get right up front is a building platform. The fuse is all built on a jig glued to a flat surface. Best bet here is to purchase a door from the local hardware and get this perfectly true and flat. This is critical as everything is then squared, leveled and measured from the flat surface. Get this wrong and things could get ugly.

    My advice - go for it. I'm more than happy to help you out from NZ.

    Are you looking at the Pitts S1 at 50% scale.

    Yes, I am looking at what they call the 3.04 Meter or 120 inch. I am very much wanting to build a large biplane but I am not a good scratch builder. Basically I can't just look at a set of planes and put everything together correctly without a great deal of mistakes where I end up backtracking and redoing a lot of previous work. Kits I am fine with. When you have a step by step sequence of tasks that are accomplished in the proper order. With this kit not having instructions I find concerning. But you seem to feel that the pictures are just what the doctor ordered though. You seem to have high praises of the kit though. As long as I can look at it and spend my time in the shop building it and not staring at a set of plans completely lost as to what exactly I am needing to do next.

    I have been in this hobby for 25 years but have not been very active since 2000. I am trying to get back in the game like I was, but since 2000 to now, it seems the hobby has been taken over by these pesky ARF's! I have been trying to find a large scale Pitts that I can get in an ARC version but apparently even they are hard to find. If there is one thing I am adamant about, that is covering my own planes!

    Please keep this thread going until you finish the plane Tobba. I need all the help I can get. I am going to make my decision this coming week one way or another! $2000 for a kit is a tough pill to swallow though.

    Hi, as I mentioned IMO the photographs are much better than instructions. Most importantly you need to spend a little time working out what order to do things in, so you don't end up going backwards to undo work. I can help you with this and its not a big deal.

    I agree re ARF's. I'm not a fan, but they have definitely opened the hobby up to many who just don't have the time, skills or inclination to build a model from a kit.

    I'm not sure of a ARC Pitts out there. Composite ARF do an amazing Pitts Model 12. Obviously a high end ARF painted in the mold pretty much ready to go + engine, radio and assembly.

    Pushing on at my end, just finished the rudder and second stab. I've decided on hinges - using SIG XX hinges running a full length wire on each surface that attaches at the root of the stabs and top of the rudder. Makes gluing and painting of the surfaces very easy with a final wire to assembly all at the end. Tried and tested by Fraser Briggs here in his TOC models for many years with good success. Made up a rather rudimentary jig to act as a mill to create slots for the hinges with my dremel. This has worked out magic and the slots that I had been concerned abouyt doing for many months all happened in one evening.

    Keen to get the tail surfaces completed before xmas to do some experiments with covering material over the holidays. I am using Stits-Lite Poly Fiber with rib stitching etc. Not something Ive done before so some mockup frame work will be used to work out how.
