RE: 34% Colombo Anderson Extra 300L Buld!!
Next is setting the ani-rotation pins. There was just enough dowl to make six pins at 1 and 3/4 inches long. I marked these so I could set them so there was 1/2 inch of dowl showing when they were glued in. Just like the stabs, I used a small piece of 1/4 X 1/4 balsa when I set the incidence on the wings. Again I used the Robart meters for this process. All incidences are set at zero. Once the wings were set, I glued the 1/4 X 1/4 balsa to the fuse, under the wing so I could drill the pins without the wing wondering. I used a long 1/4 inch drill bit for this process.

Hi Steve!
Nice to see that you have started the big one.
I am sure that with your previous experience from the 50cc version this
one should be a real winner. Just keep it as light as possible!
I have now a bit under 180 flights on my 27% extra, and it still is a pleasure to fly.

Hey Olli,
Glad to hear your still flying your Extra. I need to get mine out again some time. I've been flying my 30%er all summer long. The CA has been just sitting as a backup. I think I put about 50 or so flights on it last year. I hope to have this one going by early spring. The only hold up for me is "servos", and weather. By mid October flying is done around here until we get enough snow to fly with skis on. I've been happy with the build so far. It is almost just like the 27%er, except for the tailfeathers!!

RE: 34% Colombo Anderson Extra 300L Buld!!
After doing some thinking on the wing atatchment method, I went with the root end bolt. I cut four 1" X 1" X 1/4" hardwood blocks and made two 1" X 1" X 1/2" blocks and glued these into the root ends of the wings. I previously make a template with the root ply pieces to cover these. Once the blocks were glued in, I glued the support pieces over top for extra strength. Then I drilled through the fuse side and into the wings, center block. The blocks were then tapped for 1/4X20 bolts. I'm using plastic bolts, so I also drilled the rear anti-rotation dowls for pins as an extra safety measure.

Next was to figure out where I was going to mounts the servos. The instructions don't give a lot of detail in this area. The wings are marked, but the servos run horizontal to the hinge line. I moved the servos 90* and closer to the hinge line. The instructions also don't give much detail on mounting the servos, so I decided to use a Dalton type servo mount. I built these out of 1/4" balsa sheet for the sides, 1/8" balsa sheet for the ends, and 3/8" X 1/4" spruce for the servo mounts. The servos are in about the same area that CA had them marked.

The lines on the stab are marked for 3/8" balsa. I had to move the hinge line back 1/8" and use 3/8" balsa, (not the supplied stock), to get the amount of area I wanted to seat the hinges. I also counter-ballanced the elevators, which will help make up the diffferance plus some. The stab tube is very close to the hinge line at the stock location, and with the stock balsa sheet. I also wanted more deflection on the elevators, and 3/8" sheet on the elevator leading edge and stab trailing edge will do the trick. I'm going to use 1/2" balsa on the ailerons.

RE: 34% Colombo Anderson Extra 300L Buld!!
Steve,
Dual RX's in a 33-35% plane are not needed. I flew everything from my 33% Extra 260 to my Comp ARF 2.6 Yak on a single RX with lions and regulators. I flew mainly heavy duty 3D and never had an issue.
On my 41% and up I use a powerbox setup and single RX.
Its your call but I am just saying dual receiver setups in smaller planes are not really needed. Great build though and good call on the extra sheeting with the stringers. You will find when it comes time to cover that it helps keep the stringers from bowing in.

wifpwcf,
Thats some nice work on the covering. Thats a lot of cutting and sticking!! Mines not going to be that detailed. I've decided on the Dalton scheem for the paint. I'll use the Mark Leasburg pattern and colors. I've wanted to do this pattern for a while now and like the way it looks in the air. What are you using for power? Any flight reports yet?
airborneSGT,
Thanks for the help. I know one reciever would be fine, I just thought it would be a little safer using two, if one were to fail. I realy thought about a power expander just for the dual aileron and rudder servo simplicity. I don't want to run any Y-harnesses on this one and with the 9CS radio, I can use two recievers, with dual batts and switches, and never use a Y. I am not set up for lithium yet, but I do want to try them some day. Right now I'm useing the high discharge NiMh's in all my planes. 6 vdc with no regs. It seem to work great with the 5955 series servos, though I know the lithiums would be a better deal in weight and power.

Steve...
Wow!!!!!! What a great build thread! You really do a great job.
I guess you're too busy to do my Ultimate?
When are we gonna fly again? I need to maiden my 50cc Wild Hare Edge. It's done and ready to fly. It weighs 16lbw 10ozs. About the same as my Yak...I wish it was lighter. But, it is what it is.
Thanks
Barry

Thanks Barry,
Glad to hear your ready to maiden!!! Hope I can be there. I'm just working on this plane until I get another project. If you want me to build your Ultimate, just let me know and I'll get-r-done for you. Are you going to the fun fly this weekend? I have to work, so I'll have to miss out on this one.

Ya, I'm gonna try to fly on Friday evening and Saturday morning. The giveaways are Saturday evening...so I'll miss that. I hope to maiden this Edge before than but I'm not sure when I'll be able to. Where are you flying nowadays? Could you maiden with me tomorrow night if I can get free? Teton, Rexburg, other?
Thanks

I tried my hand at pilot building and I think I need more talent. Its in the rough right now but I think it looks more like a mutent ninja turtle. I still have to form the body more and make a visor. Then I'll seal it and paint it. At this point, the new Hanger 9 35% pilot figure looks very good at just $40.00.
