Rich, Nice photos of the Extra in flight! Also, Good idea on the rubber backed washers and I may go that route if my modified hatch washers fail. As far as the cowl screws, Since I've had good luck with nylon screws on "gasser" cowls. I have already converted to 6/32 nylon screws and the appropriate blind nuts and they work great.

Hey Rich,
Thanks for the good tips. Can you tell me what baffling you are using with the DA-85 single?

I thought it was interesting when I held up my 3W80XI for exhaust port comparison. The 90 is much bigger.

As in the example of my G-62 when put on pipe the performance really increased about 600 rpm for the better breathing.
We will see what the Torch gives us. I would love to pick up 600 and the midrange that goes with it.
Interesting that I have written three different outfits for a quote on making a custom header and nobody wants my money. Wazszup with that?

none at all and can't rememeber my temp, I want to say 176 But again look at the photo in the hover and you'll see that I had that cowl ready to put a 100cc in my plane when I got the call my 2- DA85cc where in and had the Baffleing in Ryans done and flying, so I switch him cowls and took his that was already baffled from the proto. Another thing is Ryans puts that plane through heck in spins to blender to right side up into inverted spins check by the front wing bolt and right behind that former we had to add a pc of 1/4" tri stock between fuse and former. Fuse glue come apart at that spot on 1 side of fuse. Tri stock both sides. Other than that he puts that plane through heck. Ryan and I have tried to break the plane when we first flew them. High speed walls, wing tip spins and inverted walls. In Quincy Labor Day My left side come lose Ryan noticed taking off my wings.
Rdb did you notice not only RPM with pipe but mid range is awesome also.
The cooling fins are also intresting on the torch 90 let us know what temp is. looks like alot of metal and temps will fall I think in the range of a ZDZ just a little higher. That's like the red head 3W engines you need to temp while running or you will always think the temp is high. It's the red paint heat sinking fast and giving a false reading.
Nice thread Richard

Thanks Rich,
Got ya on the former glue tristock inspection. I will also start out epoxing my canopy pins as well.
A guy over in the engine thread said about 230 degrees for head temp (torch -90)and still breaking in on a 33% Cap. Are you thinking I will get a false reading if I temp after the run? I guess I will know once I can get a header.
I asked this question over in the engine thread http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6447358/tm.htm
Anyone know of another vendor I can call to make a customer header? I tried the two outfits in Germany and one in Canada (Karl Mueller) and cant get an answer after a week now.
Another header source would be great. I really want to get this plane flying in the next two weekends. (or before)

rdb127 not to try and hijack your thread but your build on a budget has hadme thinking. I am possibly going to try and pull one of these low budget builds and see what I can come up with.
I am thinking of using one of these engines for power...................HH100T 100cc twin. Looks like one of thes can be picked up for around $640 shipped to the door. I saw some of these on ebay. With the success that the DL-50's have had it really has me thinking.
Great thread by the way.

Well while I am waiting on parts I do believe that the quality is there on the Pacific Planes 35% Extra. A few little quirks like the blind nuts.
The test comes in how it flys and the durability.
Come on Karl Mueler!! I need your artwork!!

It just occurred to me that once you get past the extra two servos, and the cost of a bigger engine and depending on engine selection..... This setup will only be costing me another 400-500 bucks over my last top shelf 50cc.
Then they say, bigger flys better.[8D]

I don't want to hijack either... but you better do yourself a fav. and do some reasearch on that engine.. numbers are way low. Almost every 80 and 85 on the market is walking all over that boat anchor.

Can I ask why these planes look exactly like the Aeroworks planes? Can someone explain?
Thanks

Back to building. Here are some shots of the inside of the wing. It looks like epoxy on the wing tube and key areas and no lack of.

My relief in the firewall has been glassed over with CF cloth inside and out. Seems pretty strong.

Didn't forget ya Ferocious. Honestly I don't know. In a build thread recently an Aeroworks Extra 260 (96 inch wing) was put together and lots and lots of similarities. I also found at least one difference.
The color sceme is similar but not the same. I can tell ya that coming from the far east that one pinned firewall looks just like another. This year's version anyhow.
If you do happen to read some of the other Pacific Planes threads the point was argued and people with the experience of seeing/owning both brands say that there is a difference most certainly.

Well I have taken some more pictures of the radio install cowl cutting and all the goodies but seem to have something wrong with my Kodak EasyShare program and now can't open it to get at the pictures.
The header will eventually come from Germany and I will be running the engine probably on Monday with the backup header that it looks like I will be using to get me past the Hotlanta gathering.
Waiting on parts and things can be frustrating but we will soon see how this plane flys on the 90CC and pipe!!

For the cowl cutout I first made a template and took care of the cylinder. Most single cylinder engines stick out but I think that this one won't look so bad as it might.
I make a rogh template and always start small working the last details with a rolled up piece of 80 grit sandpaper.

I like using the 1/32 balsa to backup my cutouts, especially where there are multiples. They go down on thick CA and after cut out with razor knife, sanding wheel and finally 80 grit paper.....I usually run some thinned out epoxy to seal them from engine gunk which may happen over the life of the airframe.
Alternatively thin CA will work too.

So that is how much I intend to cut out the cowl. Notice in previous post a little air inlet in the front of where the cylinder will be. This and the factory air should bring in enough cool air.
I am hoping that by retaining the consistency of the curved cowl (some dynamic low pressure?) and the pipe outlet in the rear of the fuse will keep a positive move on the air for cooling. I will have my handy dandy temp guage out for many of the initial flights.
