I'm gonna guess that there was a slight side load on the prop bolts. This can happen if the bolt holes are not opened enough so the prop just slides up and down the bolts when the bolts are barely in. This is what I do to make sure there is zero side load on the bolts. This can cause them to break bolts. Loose bolts can cause that too.

Joe I am pretty sure that there was no side load on the prop bolts. I had been running this prop and engine combo on my Panzl before I put it on the Yak. The prop and engine combo had over 50 flights on it. My props are always drilled a size larger than needed just to keep this from happening.

Maybe DA will shed some light on my problem.

does da use a center bolt too? just curious cause i run zdz, both my 80 and 60 have the 6 outerbolts and one big center shaft with a nut on it, like a glow motor would have, a buddy at the field was suprised even the 60 does, he said thats overkill, but it may keep things like that from happening, dont know

Nope just the 5 bolts. It only happened to me once in the couple years I owned it.. Thats a good idea though that ZDZ has..

Joe, have you maidened yours yet? We need some pictures & a flight report.
I am also interested in the amount of torque to use on prop bolts.
Thanks

Hopefully tomorrow. I tached the motor at 6500 and backed it down to just under 6400 for break-in. Weight is just under 28 lbs.
I have my bolts at 55 inch pounds right now and they seem pretty tight.

Well looks like you had it covered then. Maybe they break when they loosen up...I better keep an eye on mine.

well at least its not a common thing then, i plan on a zdz 100 or 120 for this plane when i hit the lottery, i like them, im guesing it will be like my 60 and 80, just a bigger pattern, the 60 and 80 are identical in the 6 bolts and center shaft, maybe thats why my 88" yak weighs more than most, haha

I had the exact same thing happen to me on my 35% a month ago.

On the second engine run, after I tightened the bolts, I was doing the radio check when the engine shook off the nice CF prop, sheared the bolts (all of them still in) and made a mess.

Sent it to Arizona and they said that they needed to replace the entire crank shaft and prop hub - cost me $200.

They said they believed the bolts were bottomed out and therefore not tight. They also said to always use a spinner plate, even when not using a spinner. I was kind of surprised, since I verified them and they were tight.

So much for the great DA service...

I maidened mine today. Here is the good.....Plane is in one peice. Here is the bad the DA-100 shreaded the prop bolts and slung the Menz 27x10 to somewhere between here and China. I am just glad it didn't let go when I was playing down low.

I am not sure what happened as the bolts are broke off and are still in the prop hub. Anyways the DA will be on its way to Arizona tomorrow to get checked out and make sure nothing internal got damaged.
The ES Composite pipes sound good and the plane flies awesome. I basically got one 15 minute flight and had to pack it in.

Any who ....... Here are a couple pics. Sorry for the poor quality as I had my buddies camera setup wrong.

Thats weird. I have nothing but great service from them. They are very cheap in the labor dept. They replaced my bearings and a few gaskets only cost 54 bucks, parts and labor.. I was also running a Menz on my da50 when it happened..

i found mine bottomed out without a spinner plate on my zdz as well, but i realized it before any issues, guess the all do it that way, need to use washers or something if not running a spinner i guess

If you are not using a spinner back plate I wouldn't be flying it. The bolts are going to seem tight if they bottom out. I have heard about this problem on and off over the years.. but it's not usually coming from the DA side of the fence.

Regardless of which side of the fence it comes from it's usually because of the 2 already mentioned reasons.

Another thought is the prop you use. Some hubs are a lot thicker (Vess) than others. I measured my bolts and they bottom out at 35mm. When I put the prop, prop washer, bolts/washers on and tighten everything the bolts are at 40mm so I know they are not bottomed out .

I am not following the math on that one? But what happens after a couple flights when the prop need to be tightened because the wood has compressed a bit?

If you tighten down the bolt with no prop and measure from the front of the hub to the end of the bolt it measures 35mm. When you add the prop etc and tighten downthen measure from the front of the hub to the end of the bolt its 40mm. Unless Im wrong that would mean that the bolts are not bottoming out.
Ive been working for 14 hours so maybe Im wrong.[8D]

As far as the wood compressing..your only talking about 1/16th anyway.

So doesn't that mean you only have 5mm to spare? That 1/16" is going to eat a lot of that.

I am brain dead too atm.. so don't worry about it!

k guys,
Pretty sure im getting one of these towards the end of the year and a DA85 and KS tuned pipe. Not putting together anything more then a 50cc 88"EF Yak. What kind of electronics should I go for,Smart-Fly,Emco-tech(SP?)ect? Im goin to stick with Fromeco Lith-ion Batteries/Regs/Switches. Heavy duty connectors?

Thanks,
Frank

There are 25.4mm in an inch. So 5mm/25.4mm = about 1/5th of an inch not 1/16th so he has just under a 1/4 inch. That's plenty. I always do this too. I want to know for sure that the bolts won't bottom out. I cut them if they are too long. I get new ones if they are too short.

I am pretty sure that the wood was nice and compressed on this prop as it was used on my Panzl before I put it on this plane. As far as the spinner backplate goes.....Check and double check. I had the spinner backplate on it and was ready to add the spinner once I checked all of the prop that I had with me to see which one I liked the best.
I started with a Menz 27x10 then I was going to try a Vess 27A and then the Vess 28A.

If everything on the engine had of checked out I would have made the repairs myself and went on my way. Once I inspected the engine I noticed that the prop shaft was bent and I didn't want to take a chance on starting the engine with a bent crank. That is why it is on its way back to DA for a check up. If I have to pay a couple hundred dollars to fix my engine then so be it. I know it stings but that is the way the cards are dealt sometimes.

I keep replaing everything in my mind to see if I can find a reason that this might have happened but I cant seem to find a cause for this one. I know that I made some really knuckle headed mistakes in this hobby but I feel sure that I had covered everything on this one. I always even add a dab of canopy glue to my prop bolts just to help ensure that they stay nice and snug.
I work in the electrical business and sometimes you just have to chalk some incedences up to an "electrical phenomenon". I guess this is just one of those on the hobby side.

Well I just hope my engine is back when I return from vacation. I have got to get some time on this plane as I have a couple of 3D events coming up.
