Default 12 ft miss san bernadino cost $1985

My 2cents!
I built a miss san bernadino giant scale 142in wing about 4 months ago and here is the cost.

plans $47 shipped
wood and glue from lone star balsa $300
6in dubro tires,landing gear bar stock, I bent myself $30
covering tower kote $120
alum 2in wing tube and homade sockets $25
fiberglass and cloth $20 cowl and wheel covers
batteries nimh 4 packs 2 for rec and 2 for 3w150ts spark $30 internet price 20 3000 mh cap
servo extensions and servos (cirrus 320 oz) $350
throttle,smoke and choke servos $30
receiver futaba 309 $170
used 3w150ts 30x12 prop and mufflers $1100
6in spinner $30 on ebay
misc hardware hinges,tank,plumbing etc. $50
smoke system used ebay $40

grand total $1985

labor involved is 80 to 100 hours from start to maiden flight.
It flew on rails with the exception of me bouncing it on landing.

My Great Planes Extra 330 hasn't flown yet but this is what I've spent so far. Everything was bought new.

I had some of the other stuff on hand, but the above totals $1496.

Default So...WHY Giant Scale?

Let's start trying to pull this all together:

Small airplanes flit; big airplanes fly. That's reason enough, but there's more...

The bigger the aircraft, the easier it is to add scale detail.

Wow factor. For the most part, those who watch big airplanes fly, want big airplanes.
Make a low pass at any local flying field with your giant and you'll usually hear someone behind you say "wow". That's where the term "Wow Factor" got it's name.
Other exclamatory words are frequently used in place of "wow", but "H*** S*** Factor" doesn't have the same effect. (I added the asterisks. You figure it out on your own time).

Those who have little ones and feel inadequate want big ones to feel adequate. Those who actually have big ones already feel more than adequate.
I'm talkin' airplanes here. This ain't no bumper sticker.

If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it. Therefore, doing it means you can afford it which means people think you have lots of money and they are therefore nicer to you than they are to other people who have to ask how much it costs.

The big airplanes just LOOK more PROFESSIONAL. Am I right?
That makes YOU look more professional. Right again.

No Guts, No Glory. (Also reason enough on it's own).

Your wife knows darn well that you can't be having an affair because she knows how much time you have to spend building and then maintaining your giant aircraft. You have no time for any other kind of hanky-panky and she knows it.
If you fly little airplanes, she'll always suspect you.

And lastly, because of the truism stated in the previous paragraph, many wives happily support their husbands interest in giant scale aircraft.
This is because if they can't keep you in the house, they happily settle for keeping you in the garage which is much better than you keeping yourself in sports bars and other mischievous places where she can't keep an eye on you.
Your wife calls this "Keepin' it together".

That's all I got.

I do have one rule however. I never build a model with a wingspan wider than my two-car garage.
I also never say never, and rules are made to be broken.

Once you go 40% you never go back!

Try it, you'll see what I mean.

Wind resistance, precision, reliability, easy to land and take off, what more can you ask for.
