Dietrich 50cc Extra 260 (New Build)
Well I finally got all my parts, hardware, and tools gathered up and ready to start my build of a Dietrich Extra 260 50cc. I have been watching, listening, and learning from some really good friends and great flyers and was talked into trying out my first "Gasser" venture...
After a lot of research, discussions, and monetary factors, I chose the Dietrich Performance Aircraft 50cc for its great value and attention to detail in the construction. From the little things that help the build like all control surfaces already hinged with “Robarts”, all servo controls are “ball-bearing” linked and the strings already in the wings, tail and plane for pulling servo leads or extensions…to the nice things that count like a fully detailed and finished cockpit, extra reinforcement through out the control surfaces and a great hardware package…I’m really impressed with the final product that Kevin Dietrich and his crew have put together for making flying a giant scale aircraft easy to get started with and years of fun when its done.
In the next couple of weeks or so I will give our members here a look at the building process of my DPA Extra 260 with some photos, comments and ideas of how the model is going together.

RE: Dietrich 50cc Extra 260 (New Build)
I read an article on another site about this plane by a very good builder, avi8freak about coating the inside engine/fuel and servo bays with a light weight, gray speckle poly-protectant that will help in the protection of the wood and foam sheating from minor gas spills or blow off from the engine while in use. As you can see, I masked off the area for spraying and did the coating getting as much of the area as possiable for using a spray can product. The end results is a light weight textured finish that not only protects but looks great also...[8D]

I like the idea of ball-bearing control horns & links and is just another reason for my choice of the Dietrich plane. I chose the the Airwild Uni-Hub as the connection from the control-link to the HiTEC 5985's, 5645's and the 5955TG for the rudder. This not only provides the strength needed for the torque factor but adds a nice touch to the appearance also.

How's the gear plate on this plane? This seems to be a weak point of all these high performance light-weight planes.
BTW, your set-up looks great. What are the advantages of the ball-bearing control arms?

Damn, your right kamirdawg...pretty nice when a guy can have 2 X-mas's in the same year. (LOL)
Frankie...The gear plate on this plane seems to be real good. It is well supported and done right. I always do some extra beefing up in these areas with all my planes but with this Dietrich it was minimal and involved an extra layer of some poly-glas in the gear box beam.

Congrats RC-Plane! You'll like the construction, hardware and builder-friendly approach that Dietrich uses...even the strings already in the plane for pulling your servo wiring & extentions. I'll be posting up some more pics tomorrow...[8D]

I chose to use the Dietrich "pull-pull" assembly arm with the ball-bearing assists and mounted it on a AirWild uni-hub for the HiTEC 5955TG servo.
Awh, the engine...
The heart of the bird, the power of the flight, and the quality unsurpassed! Geeze, I'm getting closer!

Not quite yet...still to come! But, I do have the ole iron all warmed up and ready for the final "smooth-out" and surface sealing. Thanks rc-plane for your thoughts and helping me to remember to dot all my "I's" and cross all my "T's"

RE: Dietrich 50cc Extra 260 (New Build)
For my throttle setup I chose to go with a HiTEC 5645MG servo and a Sullivan “Golden-Rod” for the transfer linkage. I used a 256 ball-link on the throttle arm end and a 256 Gold Clevis on the servo end. I moved the planes default servo mounting location (same side but at the rear area of the tank) to a more forward location to ease the linkage around the gas tank situation and to give the servo a shorter more positive throw at the carb’s throttle arm. The firewall provided an excellent mount for the carb’s end of the throttle linkage but I had to make the servo ends mount for the linkage out of some scrap birch ply.
The end results should be a throttle setup that is very smooth, strong, light weight, and will provide good crisp throttle response from the DA-50R. [8D]

Hey DA3,
Unfortunately you can’t get the exact same poly-coat that I used due to it is a specialized coating product that is used by and trademarked by a commercial business that is a client of mine…BUT, I can give you a great 2nd choice that is used by many flyers and the good thing is that it looks real close to the same, is pretty durable and is readily available at most any good hardware or paint store.
The product is made by Krylon, it is called “Make It Stone”, the color is “Black Granite” and the product #18201 with a bar code 24504-18201. I have been told that Rustolium makes a product of the same nature also.
Sorry I can't be of more help on this... []

Hi Aerozona.
I was wondering where you ordered that Extra, and how much was shipping. I've got something in the fire, and I just want to make the right choice.
BTW, looks good so far, don't forget me on the maiden day, okay?
Oh one more thing, did you get the decals, or are you gonna fly'er naked?
