Default 35 % and 40% Aerobatic Airplane Weights

Does anyone know what the lightest reported airframe weights are? Stock or modified.

Are they still around, what kits or ARFs were they, and are they holding up?

About the lightest unmodified 35% ARF is probably the H9 Extra 260 @ about 25-26lbs.

well there is no such thing as a true weight because no one tells the truth about the weight of their plane and everyone's scales are different. It would be interesting to do a "weigh in" at some sort of flying event. I bet dollars to donuts there are more people flying 28 pound planes than they report! I love how some guys say they weigh their planes on fancy schmancy digital scales and then shave a couple of pounds as they report it!

Default RE: 35 % and 40% Aerobatic Airplane Weights

Was that 260 weighed with one wing or two?[)]

It's a bit hard to put weights on planes between the two sizes. I have a G-202 that accurately scales at 41% (106"ws, 97" overall length) and it weighs 25lbs., 10 ozs, ready to fly, no fuel. That's well below the usual 40% weight, but a 202 is a small plane even in full scale. OTH, I have a 35% 202 that weighs about the same, ready to fly, due to differences in construction.

So how does one come up with a "lightest" plane weight when everyone sets them up differently? Some people like redundant everything and prefer to add wood to "strengthen" what they consider critical areas while others are perfectly content to assemble it straight out of the box and only run primary systems. The difference between the two styles can generally be measured in pounds.

Now just to differ with the H-9 number, Wild Hare's 35% planes are coming in at 24 pounds or less using a DA 85 and flying as good as anything out there with a larger engine.

I guess I must be new or something. Why lie about your weight unless your a woman? I mean why? Does it make one sound smarter if he fly's a light plane? I know what weight and flight have in common but lying? If you say your plane weighs less than it does just to get people talking....I know your type.

Funny thing about this is a guy from my lhs does this very thing all the time. Same guy who's wings fail every few weeks. He just built a bipe in micro size witha 12 inch ws that he claimed weighed 40grams....when in real life it weighed 58grams and the wings folded....hmmmmm.....lying paid off for the spectators. He does not like doing the math required for wing loading so he fly's whatever he builds. I like sitting in my truck when he flies.

I found the 28 lb 40% 260 airplane you guys are talking about on the other sight, but after reading these posts, are you saying that he is lying about that airplane?

I just completed a Pacific Plane 35% Extra 260. All up weight with DA-100 is 26lbs.

With a BME 110 or DA-85, it would likely come up at 25lbs.

I had a DR Hobbies 35% Extra 102" wing span with a DA-85 and wrap around Pitts muffler. It came in at exactly 23 lbs. with one aileron servo per wing, and a single A123 receiver pack. It was a great flying plane at that weight.

My 35% Pacific Planes Extra 260 with 3W-106CS with 1060 tuned pipes, double recievers and 3 packs of A123 batteries show 28lbs on my scales.. Weight really doesn't matter to me, it's not like there is a lot of stuff I would or could take out if I "Thought" it was too heavy.. All I know is the vertical is ballistic and it lands at a crawl, light enough or heavy enough for me I guess...

Thats all there is to it. It doesn't matter what it weighs, it matters how it flys. I think if most people through away their scales they would never know the difference.

OK Here goes.

CARF Yak 3.3m 54.8 lbs ZDZ B210 AK
CARF Super Xtra 42 lbs ZDZ 160 B2
CARF Yak 2.6m 27 lbs DA 100
Extreme Flt 87" Yak 16.5 lbs DA 50
GP Matt Chapman Cap580 27.7 lbs DA1-00
DP 28% Edge 540 13.5 lbs Saito 220

Keep in mind these Planes were built using mostly After market or Custom parts.

Does that help U?

The Thrust U want is at least 2 to 1 and the Wing Loading that Flys smoothly for me is anywhere from 30 to 36 Oz per square foot.

Hope my 2 cents helps U

So it really does not matter if you have two of the same airplane and one weighs 40 lbs. and the other weighs 28 lbs. because you would not be able to tell the differance when flying it?

Like I said earlier it would be fun to have a weigh-in at certain events using one scale and get the guys to say what their plane weighs and then weigh it and see how close they really are...I bet you at least 75% of the guys would say their plane is lighter than it really is. When building, I am somehwat weight conscious but I am not obsessive about it...if I see a panel and think I can get away by drilling a few lightening holes in it, I will, otherwise I stick with stock engineering! You can't change the weight of a servo or a battery pack but you can remove weight during the building or assembly process if you are careful.

Curious, how many of you guys quoting your weight are on canister/pipes vs stock or wrap-around mufflers ??

BIG difference. Appreciate the added information. [)]

My Comp Arf 2.6m 260 extra is at exactly 26.6 lbs with DA 100 and slimline in cowl mufflers on mejzlik 26x12.

Niteman

This little 2.6m Yak is 27lbs on the button but could have been built about 1/2 lbs lighter.

All my large CARF machines run JMB Cans.

The 2.6m Yak has those DA compact mufflers.

The extreme Flt has a Slimline with a DA 50.

I use a digital fish scale and weight the planes throughout the build process. I am also checking CG throughout the build.
All the small parts are weighted on digital postal scales and then added in. The final Weight and Balance is derived via the Fish scale and the weight of all components added.

Is it overkill U bet it is but my machine Fly really nice.

Hey, thats really great information thanks !!! [)]

I was set to put mtw 75k's on the 2.6 extra and it would have came in at almost 28lb on the nose, but I chose to keep it light.

If need be I can always do some remodeling.

FYI, my AW 50cc yak QB with DA 50 on j'tec std. wrap around is at 18lbs on the ounce (no wheel-pants).

Also, building AW Yak 75cc qb with DA 85 on a mtw-110R can, so far everything points to 21-lb 13oz with the use of lots of titanium, carbon, aluminum etc....

Best, Dan
