RE: Pilot-RC Yak
Yes it is, however I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Just another build thread that will be helpful to many who are interested in the product.
As T.O.M said it has the potential to grow into a massive thread like some of the others here which is a good source of info. Nothing wrong with that at all

I wonder if this assembly thread is part of the Troybuilt models "Sponsored Pilot" program?

Somewhat, but this was more of an introduction of Pilot-RC. I worked with Tony Tan of Pilot-RC to get this airplane through TBM. I am in the TBM sponsored pilot program so that is why you might see some TBM stuff in this thread,,,

RE: Pilot-RC Yak
Firewall is marked perfectly for a DA 100.
Grip it and rip it !!! 1/4 drill bit
About 1 inch of spacers is about right.
Fender washers on the backside of the firewall.
I decided to look inside the pre assembled fuel tank, curiosity got the better of me! What I found looked great ! Put it back together with no worries.
I did use a little saftey wire to secure the connections out side of the fuel tank.
There is a good instructional video here on the use of saftey wire. [link=http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/newsite/videos_totd.html]Saftey wire, click here[/link]
There is a throttle pushrod supplied,,but I added a little 'bling'. The pre assembled throttle servo mount is nice. Glue it where ever you like if you are using cannisters.
I like manual chokes, no servo needed.
Glued the top on the engine box, fits nicely!
Installed reciever switches,,,, that was easy. Cut out was already there, just used my trusty soldering iron to remove the covering.
Held the wheel pant to the gear and marked the attachment points. Drilled and installed blind nuts. Simple!
Wheel pants done, again simple!

The airplane and it's components appear to be of very high quality... Hmmm, I wonder if Pilot-RC needs a "sponsored pilot" to do review on either of their carbon fiber version 50cc Extra models ?? I could assemble and review the heck out one of those!

Very nice! I was looking at their web site yesterday, but had no idea the quality of the kit and the hardware was this nice. I am impressed!! Congratulations on your new plane.

Thanks! It actually is pretty nice. Wish I could get pics looking into the wing root, construction is super!

Might I suggest they get rid of the fuel line safety wires and go with zip ties? Saftey wires on gas line eventually ends up cutting through the line, generating an air leak.

RE: Pilot-RC Yak
Todays update.
Tried to get a decent pix of the cowl ring but it didn't workout too well. It is actually "glassed" to the cowling, not just glued! Also noticed that the canopy mounting tabs, tailwheel mounting plate and mian gear mount are made of the same very hard plywood as the firewall. Will not compress and get sloppy.
All of the laser cut pieces have the black burn marks sanded off, better bonding and will not show through the covering.
Now to cut out the cowling. I made a template from an old manilla file folder.
Marked the location of the muffler outlets then folded the template back. It is attached with masking tape.
Removed the mufflers and bolted the cowling on. I then transfered the the muffler outlet locations to the cowling. Also marked the bottom of the 'oil cooler' for removal.
I then drilled pilot holes and used a Uni-Bit to make the cuts for the exhaust stacks.
A Dremel cut off wheel was used to remove the bottom of the oil cooler.
A sanding drum and small sanding block finished things up.
I mounted the DA ignition box with zip ties.
I mocked up the wiring,,,
Here is a mock up of the whole plane minus the prop and spinner! Will try to fly it this week.[sm=thumbup.gif][sm=thumbup.gif]

Tony get to work. We need flight reports and video yesterday........lol. The plane looks great. That last pic shows a DA 150 under the hood. Now that will be some serious horsepower.
I hope your maiden goes well. Keep us up to date. Looks like Allen may be pulling the trigger on one of the 150cc Yaks.

RE: Pilot-RC Yak
Got the maiden flight out of the way today. Just a conservative 4 minute flight. Video soon.
This airplane is replacing my tried and true 35%SD Yak. Moved the DA100 to the new Pilot-RC airframe. I had the presence to accurately weigh both airplanes. They are set up exactly the same with the exception of Hitec 7955 servos verses 5955 servos. The SD airplane was 29 lbs 4 oz. The new Pilot-RC plane was exactly 27 lbs,,, That is over TWO pounds lighter!! AND IT FEELS LIKE IT !!!! wOOt !!!!wOOt !!!
Even with the same set up, the airplane is different. Flies much lighter and way more agile! Going to have to use a little more expo!
Again, video soon!
