I've been wanting a QQ Yak for some time now and just seen they are on sale for $650.00. I'm going to try and pick one up before the sale ends. I have the DA 85 and equipment to go in it. How many others are taking a look at this one?? I'd like to use it for IMAC.

I bought one in October at $699.00, installed at DA-85 and Greves tuned pipe. 25 pounds 5 ounces. Flies very well with a Vess 26B prop.

Well this throws a monkey wrench into my plans. I was planning on picking up a EF 110" yak this week, but this deal is making me rethink. What is the difference between the 101" and 102" qq yaks? Besides the $100 difference and covering scheme. I'm having a hard time getting past the shape of QQ's yaks. Decisions decisions

I bought the 101, friend of mine bought the 110, go with the 110, flies great.

The 85 on the KS1090 pipe on a Mejzlik 28x10 is the setup to run ridiculous power.

That setup has almost NO vibration, way less than any DA 100 I've seen and we have a TON of them at my field to compare them too.

They are both great planes, but for the money the QQ 101" is the way to go.

If you were on a budget def the QQ. Could probably get an 80cc used to have the frame and engine for $1200. Servos brings you up to $2000. Some switches and batt's, prop and spinner. Sounds like a $2300 project. Not bad for a QQ 101 Yak.

But if it were me I'd just splurge on the EF 110. The difference in size is substantial, not really even comparable.

I bought the 101 because for the money it is a great plane.

After seeing the power and performance of the 85 on the KS1090 and the flight performance of the 110 I can't help but wish I had gone that route instead.

The 110 does out fly the 101 hands down, no question.

If you are on a budget then the 101 is a great plane for $650.

If you want the best plane for an 85, then the 110 is the better choice IMO.

Sorry didn't mean to turn this into a QQ vs EF thread but I just went through this choice with a friend of mine and the results are easily seen at the field when you have the planes side by side and flown one after another.

The main difference other than the 101 being built around the 85 and the 102 built around the DA 100 is that the 101 is about 2 inches longer in the fuse.

I've had mine side by side with a 102 and they appear to be identical up to the cowl, then they are different with the 101 having a much longer motor box and cowl. From the cowl back they appear to be the same plane as the Gen IV 102.

Looks like you are running a pitts muffler on the 101. How much more power do you think it will have with the KS 1090 or Greeves?

Remember too that set up has a lot to do with plane performance! And I'm not saying that anybody's plane "was" or "was not" set up properly here, just that I've seen identical planes fly much differently due to setup!

Great comparison picture, thanks for posting it! Did you happen to take any more pictures? I would love to see them.

That picture show just how HUGE the 50cc EF Yak is, the fuse is almost the size of the QQ Yak. The 110" EF Yak is just a beast. I am looking at getting either the QQ or the EF Yak, but am afraid the EF yak won't fit in the Man Van as easily while I know the QQ Yak will fit (I can carry a 3' high stack of 8x4 plywood inside, tailgate closed, behind the front seats).

One interesting thing is the shape of the turtle deck and canopy between the QQ and the EF designs, with the QQ being much taller back toward the rudder. The rudder on the QQ is also much thinner. The QQ also won't support a cannister (2" diameter max).

With the pitts muffler I turn a Mejzlik 26x10 around 6300 or so.

With the KS1090 he is turning a Mejzlik 28x10 at 6600 and it rips the prop with authority.

We both run redline 40:1 and the engines have roughly the same amount of time on them. (8-10 gallons)

After seeing that it is fairly obvious the 85 is designed to run on a pipe rather than a muffler.

Agreed, but him and I have very similar if not the same setup practices and we trim our planes out the same so I would say our setups are very close.

We fly together just about every weekend so I am very familiar with his setups.

The 110 is just down right huge, the rudder dwarfs the 101 rudder.

He pretty easily fits his 110 in a Honda Oddessy (sp?) mini-(man)van, not sure what you have but maybe that helps. I also know it will fit in a doge caravan. I have a truck myself and carry the planes in the back but I leave the tailgate down.

The 101 is built around the greeves pipe and that's pretty much all that will fit in there without hacking the entire bottom of the plane out and building your own mounts.

The 110 will easily fit just about any pipe you want. He did have to trim the landing gear mounting plate in it to clear the taper on the 1090 but it was a very minor mod that needed to be done.

That is dangerous, because I have an Odyssey Man Van and now I know the big EF beast will fit. Does your friend remove the stabs?

The big question is this: Is the EF Yak 53% better than the QQ? It costs 53% more than the QQ including hardware (QQ) and shipping (on both), $860 for QQ vs. $1318 for the EF. Granted the EF is as large as many 40% planes.

Also what does your friend's EF weigh? I assume your QQ yak is around 25#.

Yes he takes the stabs off, it goes in tail first and I think the tail is in between the seats. He also has a 40% Krill Yak, and a 40% 3W Votec and they both fit in the Odyssey as well so I guess your screwed... lol.

As to whether it's 53% better... well, I'll tell you this, if you buy the QQ you will love it and be fine.... until.... somebody shows up with the 110. If you fly somebody elses 110 after buying the 101, well I believe you'll find yourself in my situation, wishing you had bought the 110.

His Yak came in at 29lbs, my 101 came in at a porky and disappointing 26lbs weighed on 2 different scales. We both have the same gear in the planes with the only difference being the exhaust. Basically the setups are a 1200mah A123 on ignition, dual 2300 A123's on the RX's, we are running the spektrum 9100 RX's, and we have smart fly ignition kills. Both planes are running a single 8711 on the rudder with no rudder racks so the setups are very close to being the same and pretty much minimalist to keep weight at a bare minimum. Both planes weigh a little more than either of us would have liked.

If the 101 was not on sale which would you buy?

I give the build quality easily to EF and the customer service to EF also. (The customer service opinion based on personal experience with both companies)

The 110 is a more capable aircraft in the air, presents better, flies bigger (because it is).

Really I should say instead of more capable it is easier to do more with less talent with the 110 over the 101. The 101 will do everything the 110 can do but it makes you work a little harder on the sticks to get it to look as nice, if that makes any sense.

Worth 53% more? Well I guess that only you can judge that, if I was to do it again I know which one I would buy.

I value the time I spend putting these together. I would prefer to spend the extra money if I'm going to dedicate that much time assembling and setting them up.....to get "the most bang for my time buck". I take a long time on these babies, it's worth it.

The KS 1090 has a 3" outside diameter so it won't fit without some modifications. Apparently the distance between the floor and the bottom of the fuse will only allow a 2" diameter pipe. the KS pipe is a HUGE baseball bat.

I am pretty close to pulling the trigger for the 101" Yak myself, but my cannister is 70mm diameter iirc, or about 2.75". I am really torn, but I am afraid the EF is just too big for me logistically and I have my doubts whether my 80cc engine can handle a 29# plane, even on a tuned pipe, and I don't want to buy a new engine. I have this obsession about engines on the bench without airplanes attached to them

Keep us posted on your build with the 101" QQ Yak. I have heard the quality is far better than it was a few years ago. My Dad's 102" is about 4 years old now and is great, no problems other than minor issues (besides the original wing problem, since remedied).

There is a picture on another thread of Bill Hempel pulling one of his 52% Extra 260's out of his Man van, and he still had enough room to bring his two daughters to the field. Where there is a will, there is a way!
