Default TBM 50cc 30% Magic Hand Yak 54 Build Thread

Hey Everyone,

I recently have started building from troy built models the 50cc 30% magic hand yak 54. [link=http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/MHYAK-87.html].
So far i have been very happy with the build. The plane looks strong, well built, and has gone together easily with little modifacation.

This is what I am putting in the plane:

DA-50
KS-86v canister
22x8 prop
Smart-fly super-reg
Smart-fly ignition cut-off w/ 5.2v regulator for ignition battery
Spektrum AR-9100 reciever
1 JR DS-8711 servo w/ SWB servo tray
4 JR DS-8611 2 on elevator (1 on each half) 2 on aileron (1 on each wing)
1 JR DS-8231 on throttle
3 Fromeco 2600 mAh batteries (1 on ignition, 2 on reciever)
4 SWB Servo Arms

I am looking forward to flying this plane it looks like it will fly great!
If you have questions ask, ill be posting pictures along the way.

Hey, dragnbye
To help yo think about what engine, here is my tip for you. I have a DL-50 and love that engine, you would not believe. It has so much power for my WH Sukhoi it is almost ridiculous. EVery time I fly my plane it seems it get stronger and stronger. This little 50cc fires up on the first flip, no kiddin'. I 'd prime the motor by flipping the prop back and forth a few times, turn the ignition on and she pops right away. Choke off, and she runs after another flip. I am truely amazed how well this motor starts and runs. Not to say the DA is not as good, but it is certainly not better, because it can't get any better than this. I paid only $390.00 RTR including shipping. Consider that.

hey dragnbye,

very cool. how do you like it so far? also about how much does yours weigh? since i have never used a DL engine I dont really have a preference, but ive herd only good things about DA. Also every DA-50 ive seen they start with a flip and work great! Do you have any suggestion or did you make any mods to the plane?
thanks.

cam,

Mine has been ready to go for a while. I was very impressed with the
finish. One of the best arf covering jobs I have seen! Standard build, but
added thin ca to all the framework joints I could reach. Also beefed up the
motor box some...looked a little weak to me...

I did the same re glued all joints i could find. ive had a plane fail in flight cause it wasnt glued fully, not fun I did beef the motor box up some it seems strong now ill post a few pics. How heavy did the plane come out at for you. And what is your thought on the tires that come stock with the plane? they look weak, im going to replace with some rubber tires.

cam
i dont have a sacle right now my battery died in it but the web shows 18 pounds ready to fly. do you fly off grass or runway if grass you should be fine if black i would just kept them on and next year just buy some sky lites

and as far as the da goes i have been hearing that da (not all) sometimes has a prolbem running inveted and the fix is to take parts from the dl to make it run right. but i want to make this a dl/da battle

dryverman
you all correct about the coving and the over all finsh of this arf horizon couldnt touch this in there dreams!!!! and whats stoping you from flying this bird

I will post some pictures soon of all the mods i have done to the plane etc.

If anyone made any mods or have suggestions please post them id like to see some of the different set-ups out there.

Thanks.

Here are some pics of how the plane came out of the box. I put the plane together to check fit. Note that the rudder has just been slid into place and does not come glued. I was very impressed by the way it was shipped.
The plane was double boxed and was wrapped in bubble wrap, the wings came in a seperate box also double boxed. There was no damage what so ever. All ultracote was tight with no bubbles, other than a few checkers on the elevator had lifted corners. Some of the pre-installed items are: fuel tank, fuel dot, some fuel line, pre hinged elevator and ailerons, ready to bolt on landing gear, cowl, and elevator halves, and more!!

Make sure to check your landing gear. I have the yak 55 from magic hand, and it has been reinforced with metal brackets. If yours has not been reinforced, make sure to do so.

Here are some pictures of how i set up my elevator and rudder. still working to get my geometry right on elevator. i used the SWB servo arms to get the best set up for 3d. right now it looks like my deflections on elevator are about 40 down and 45 up. and i made rudder max. the install was very easy, there was no sanding to make the DS-8611's fit. As you can see with the rudder tray we had to add a piece of wood to help hold the tray. it works great and there are no problems. i used "wire keeps" which hold the wires down by pushing them into the keep, i used those to help guide my wires and keep them in place. I made my own servo extensions which all the parts were purchased from servo city. we also used the SWB titanium turnbuckles for the linkage on elevator and aileron. that way it is easy to adjust. we had to replace the ball link in order to make them work. we also made sure the control horn on the elevator, rudder, and aileron lined up with the hinge line, which ment cutting the washer to get it all to line up.

Looking good cam![sm=thumbs_up.gif]

Are you doing anything to beef up the landing gear mount?
I hav'nt done anything to mine yet, but when I dig it out
of winter storage and put the engine back in I might....

as of now i am not. if anyone could find some pictures of that yak 55's landing gear mount and post it that would be great. if i could see how it was done i would consider it, right now i am just going to take some epoxy and re glue aroung the landing gear.
