RE: TBM 50cc 30% Magic Hand Yak 54 Build Thread

That flex is just after i landed it was still "loaded" from the wieght of the plane. I glued around the landing gear really well, so far it has stayed together without any problems. I think you should be fine, but i dont know how your field looks. The flexing part of the landing gear is nice, it will keep you out of trouble on a hard landing, also it wont want to bounce on landing. Which is really nice since this plane doesnt need alot of airspeed to fly. I have flown it since then two more times, and i reccomend toaning the elevator down alot for the first flight, it is really sensitive!

very cool. keep us posted as you build. What are you going to do on the set up for everything else?
I will run the Torch 60 on a Vess 23A until broken in and then go to a 24x8 of some sort. I will use a JR 8611A on the rudder and I will be using the Power HD 9150Mg on all of the other surfaces. I have been wanting to try them out and see what they can do. I figured this would be just the plane to try them out on.

As soon as I get my Carden finished I will start building this one.

I fly JR. I have had nothing but great servos from them. But I have never tried Futaba servos, other than on my first plane i had Futaba servos and radio, but they were 17 years old, still worked too.

Rush I would like to know how those Power HD servos work. I have not tried them yet.
Also I mainly suggested to tone down the elevator because come landing time it is really squirrly. Just something to be cautious for on the maiden, but nothing that cant be handled.

For expo I set every surface around 50% expo. And for deflection on rudder tone it down to about half its max throw. Elevator is about 13 degrees of deflection, its enough on the maiden for me. And aileron is about 15 degrees of deflection, but i have increased its throws so proboly more.

1994toy, according to the manual it is 185mm from the leading edge, it works for the maiden, but i would put it so it was nose heavy.

I got 13 more flights in today, spent about 10 hours at the field flying. I mainly practiced IMAC for my first competition next weekend. I feel the plane flys great it does nothing wierd, great power with a DA-50. Floats for landings, but slows down real quick once leveled. Still loving the plane.

Still no flying at our field yet, access road is gated and locked. (Mud season
follows winter here) Couple of weeks yet....

Congratulations on the 1st place! That tells me you are already getting comfortable
    with the yak...great news!

1994toy...you can download the "manual" from the Troybuilt website.

sorry that you still got some time before you can fly that sucks.

I like the way the plane flys, with some work anyone can have this plane turned into a good IMAC plane. The next couple weeks im going to put it through some 3d. Ill let you know what i think, also the engine has about 3 gallons through it so it is done with break in. Im going to replace the 22x8 wood prop with a 23x8 Carbon Fiber prop soon. Ill keep everyone posted.

    Thanks

RE: TBM 50cc 30% Magic Hand Yak 54 Build Thread

Well after many flights i do not like the tail wheel or main landing gear provided. The main landing gear does not spring back to the original position it started, it flexes and then does not return if it was a big flex or hard landing. The rudder tail wheel does good but it is also deforming some now. I am going to replace the stock tail wheel with a carbon fiber one from TBM. I am also going to replace the landing gear with either a carbon or thicker aluminum gear. Does anyone know of a company that makes a gear for this plane other than TNT landing gear? I think that is the last thing i will need to change other than that it has been great.

RE: TBM 50cc 30% Magic Hand Yak 54 Build Thread

I finally got around to weighing the plane and lets just say i wasnt too thrilled. It came out at 20 lbs. I am very dissapointed, i really dont see what i coud do to lighten it other than 1 less battery, no servo tray. And even with that it still does not drop below the high 19 lb range. that is also with a carbon fiber wing tube. So 3d is pretty much out of the question. Also just to get the CG right took 12 oz. to the nose, everything is as far forward as can be and i have an aluminum spinner on. Does anyone else have any idea what the weight is on there plane, is this just me having a problem or is this common to every MH yak 54?

I havn't weighed mine yet but I'll do it this week-end and let you know.

I was afraid that main gear wouldn't hold up over time, way too much
flex just sitting still...and the excessive weight sure doesn't help! The
plane still should 3D fine though.

You might try Graphtech, they make carbon fiber gear for several mfgrs,
maybe one of their sizes will fit.

Okay i will try this next weekend, i checked graphtech and they didnt have one, i am having one custom made out of thicker aluminum, should fix the problem.
i am using a 3.5'' tru-turn spinner. And it 3d's decent just power is not great, not enough to really pull out if needed, but im trying a new prop and break-in is done so we will see.

Got mine on the scale yesterday, 18lbs 5oz. This is basically the same set up
as you have, except mine has a pitts muffler (DA). I also have a cf wing tube,
everything else stock. The reciever and ig. batteries are mounted on the motor
box, cg is per instuctions with no extra nose weight added.

Still have not test flown yet, we have been working on getting our field in better
shape, looks like the middle of May....

Anyone else flown your Yak yet?? dragnbye??
