    Yes, couldn't agree with you more, Joe. On my smaller models (1.20 to 1.60 size glow engines) I've always used metal geared servos w. 125 oz torque. I have these on a Funtana 100 X and a Funtana 90, an old Sig Cap 231 EX, a GP Super Stearman, a Sig Rascal 110, a GP Extra 330S, and even the 60 sized GP U-Can-Do-3D. Just this past season I saw two crashes of high end gas models caused by servo failure. One was in fact a Hitec with karbonite gears. (Forget the model number) The other crash caused the pilot to have to exit the flying box real fast, and the plane crashed about a foot from where he had been standing. The mantra of this hobby should be; SPEND YOUR MONEY ON GOOD STRONG SERVOS!

    Gentlemen & Ladies,

    This past weekend the weather here in deep south Texas literally blew. No flying was done, but....

    ... today the weather was balmy so some of my friends and I played hookie and went flying. My friends decided that today would be bipe day. See the pic. L to R: GP M-12 (DLE55), GP Ultimate (G-62), Chinese M-12 (Zenoah 26cc), Goldberg Ultimate (Saito 150) and unknown brand mini electric Ultimate in front.

    I have the full dry weight on my M-12. It is 18.2 lbs - this is below the GP listed minimum weight of 19 lbs. This weight includes the aluminum landing gear I made as well as a 3.5" aluminum spinner. No cockpit floor or pilot. The only thing I did different to any of my previous models was the use of 2 LiIon 2-cell battery packs instead of 2 x 5-cell AA sized packs. I did not try to shave weight off anywhere. This plane flies very lite and should have no problems with another 1-2 pounds added to it at sea level.

    I made 4 10 minute flights and each was great. This plane is a keeper. I let my good friend Scott have the sticks for a few minutes and he now wants one real bad.

    does removing the canopy allow access tp the radio gear? Im on the fence about getting a big bipe. I was thinking bout the aeroworks ultimate until I realized you could only access radio gear from the bottom, thats a deal breaker for me

    Wow, I wonder why Aeroworks would do that? That Goldberg Ultimate was the same, you had to go through the bottom. Such a hassle.

    The canopy does come off. I switched out the 4 metal screws with 10-24 nylon. These hold on the canopy. I do my wiring connections with the canopy removed.

    I actually had it for a flight. It seems a little heavy with the Zenoah 26cc, but it flies quite well. The sink rate when the throttle is cut is high.

    Bigg, that bipe is from Nitroplanes. From what I've read and the conversations I've had with those who've purchased it, they've said the quality is pretty good. NP has been out of them for while. My plan was to power one with a brushless motor....and EDF! Lot's of room under the belly of the fuselage to strap on an EDF.

    Great picture with all the bibes.
    18.2 lbs seems very reasonable to me for a nice biplane. My EF Yak monplane is 17.5lbs and mine flys fine up here in thin air. This may be me next project.

    Yep, more flights and liking it more & more. Had 3 bipes out today and 3 of us flew each aircraft for comparison. L to R: GP M-12, GP Ultimate & BME Ultimate.

    The M-12 feels the lightest on the sticks and has less cross-coupling "badness". The M-12 now has 25 flights on it, BTW. Today was a hot & humid day with almost no air movement yet the plane and the DLE-55 performed flawlessly.

    I have felt the same way about servos...
    In this sense, I really do not see the savings between buying a 50cc 84-84" ws monoplane
    or a 70" wss 1.20 or a 35cc 78" was monoplane...
    They all would get the hottest servos I could afford...

    I have some Karbonite servos on my TF flite GIant p-51 mustang.....
    Have not flown it yet, so I guess I am lucky....
    I picked them up because I could program them with the Hitech programer....

    I will swtitch them out....

    18lbs is a what I would have thought it would come in at...

    Just a question guys on this plane.Thinking of getting one and see that O,S have brought the 55GT gas engine out.Would this work ok with this plane?Or is the engine mount stand offs a problem? or stick with the DA engine combination?

    We flew this airplane on both the DA and the OS. Both flew it well. The downside of the OS is that it has a forward facing carb that makes mounting the dummy engine / cooling fins difficult. Additionally you will need to do some extra work to set up the throttle for the OS.

    Hi, I just got one of these, I am looking forward to building it. I have been reading your build, nice build BTW. I have one question, which standoffs did you use for the DLE 55, I see the kits says to use 3" standoffs but the engine is supplied with approx. 2 5/8" standoffs. Thanks

    I did not measure the length of the stand-offs, but I did use the standard ones that were supplied with the DLE55.

    The OS gas engine is a monster...
    Uses the same muffler as DA/Dl
    WIps the Extreme flight 88" yak around like a rag doll...on standard muffler...

    at 550$ (tower club discount) not bad at all....
    Can run lipo on the ignition w/o regulator... and can swing a 23 inch prop and is quite light??
    THe front carb is only draw back...

    Hi, I did my first fly with my new bird yestarday. This Pitts is incredible, very stable.... I think this is because the weight, it is 17.8 lbs.

    I'm using a DA 50, Slimline Pitts, 3 in standoff. The size of stand off is important to keep a good distance between the prop and cowl. Xoar 22x8 for break in and after Xoar 23x8.

    Ed,

    Very nice. Glad to see another M-12. Your other pictures are very nice as well. Yep, prop to cowl distance is important. The low air speed stability of this plane is phenomenal. I am a die-hard Extra fan, but this plane can do low speed flying better than my Comp-Arf Extra!

    All you are missing are some more decals. Your aircraft looks a little naked.

    I agree with you, there is a lot of white space on it. I will put some decals and a spinner this week and take new photos on the next weekend... The fact is, I finished the linkage at 3:00am and went to the field at 9:00am to fly this plane.

    My CF landgear until now is ok. After 8 flights, 1hr of total flight time, some internal junctions ware a bit looser and I glued again.

    My new DA is still break-in and after that I expect to have a little more power running a 23x8, and have a better vertical response.

    As you said at low speed the plane flies like a kite, the wings don't rock, and when it's stall, the nose just goes down. There is no better response for that. Great project from GP, congrats guys.

    If I have any news about it I will put here in the forum, and if you have any, please write here.

    I will keep updating my picasaweb with new photos of it in "Meus Avioes" (My planes) section.
