ORIGINAL: RevyMaxx

thats what I heard form you before!

I really hoped this whole thing went smooth and I could talk about how good it was, but soo far I hit some pothole at every step. Pilot not the company it was, or, I dunno. I expected better service from both Tony and Ray and thought they would do the right thing. Everything positive said about them to me, it seems, has been hog wash. Buyer beware.

If you are referring to me I stand by what I told you, they have treated me very fare and you have to remember that Tony at Pilot-RC is not just servicing Canada and the factory(from what I've heard)is running 16 hours a day to fill orders. But it sounds like there was some kind of a problem in your situation. Did you ask for a refund?

I was kidding with you otter, sorry if it came out wrong.

I am really upset that Tony himself kinda knew I wanted one in early November through another forum. I went to his web site and under dealers I found Paragon. So what my beef is why did Ray not say if you want it sooner, order direct from Tony. I went through Tony's website!!! In e-mails back and forth, the planes were to arrive in January. I paid for mine thinking it would insure my delivery. Then the dates kept getting pushed back, first March now April. Low and behold not a few weeks later they start showing up in threads and these guys did not know what they wanted 10 days before!

How do you think that would make someone feel as a customer?!

Not a problem buddy but what you are explaining is a whole different ball game, (being a dealer myself) and if a customer of mine wanted something I was selling right away or as early as possible and I didn't have it in stock, I would definitely send you to someone who could provide that service. I understand your frustrations, I'm the same way tell it like it is not like what it might be.

I apologize for the painfull, looking forward to serve you and have a good flying season.

Ray, I apologize for the public nature. I was mad, and IDK what happened but the line of communication broke down. My fault too. I know what difficult customers can be like, I was not trying to be one.

You have had a bunch of folk stand behind you and your products and that does say more to me than what I previously thought. Again I am sorry for the rant.

I'll be alittle more diligent with the Area-51 in after run procedures. Maybe not starting it up dry is the answer. Lube the NB before initial start up. The spare crank will be good to have, if the rest of it holds up when/if it ever lets go.

Servos arrived and I didn't order enough I have found out. It needs 2 on the elevator, I shorted myself there. The seven servos, 2x HS-7940TH + 5x HS-7950TH, were $840 plus tax!

I do have enough of the HV servos as I got two in my MBX-6T already but will steal the 7950 off the truggy to use on this thing.

Finally maidened mine today!

This is one wicked plane! The Area-51 53cc hasn't been broken in fully and I am impressed. A ten minute flight that required only a few clicks of trim was relaxing for a maiden. I had gone to the field for taxi trials and tuning when after a dozen passes the thought hit. Everything was perfect, sun shinning, wind had calmed down and the plane held up well following those tests, except I was alone. I would have preferred one of our clubs more experienced gas pilots to have been there. I was nervous as all could be when I first gave it throttle to actually put it in the air. Her wings bit not even thirty feet with 80% throttle. She climbed effortlessly and did everything I had nervously asked. Vertical was descent for a new motor. Before too long I got comfortable with her and did all the basic stuff checking for gremlins. Nothing to remark negatively. This thing flies beautiful. The 7950s made the controls seem crisp and precise. I was 6 minutes in before I realized "I got to land it now"! After a few low passes over our runway I thought I nailed the approach speed so I got brave enough to put'er down. The first landing wasn't the prettiest, but not the worst, lol. She stopped short of the end of our runway still purring. After a brief post flight inspection, in the air again! The second 10 minute more robust flight ended in picture perfect flare this time. I had a HUGE grin on my face and did a little dance!! By then though, it was time I had to pack up as I promised the wife. I do have all day tomorrow!!

I will definatly bring a camera this time as I thought I wasn't doing anything special. Our clubs top pilot will put her through her paces tomorrow!!

Way to go jay!!!

To bad I wasn't there to film the shaking knees!! hehe

Maidens are always a bit scary. Just remeber no crazy vertical climbs or hovering untill u have put through a few gallons of fuel through the engine. Just do boring circuits for those 2 gallons with lots of varying rpm. Change your rpm in flight every minute or so. Running from idle to full throttle. Lol, you won't believe how many circuits you will have to do to burn off 2 gallons of fuel. And fill that tank right up before every flight. One gallon mixed at 25:1 and one gallon at 40:1 or 50:1 which ever the manufacturer suggests for normal use. and stick with ashless castrol for about 5 gallons and then switch to the expensive synthetic. I always use the cheaper low octane gas. I tried the high 94 stuff u can get from chevron but I found no power differance at all.

I should have my 50cc 79" 260 ready for next weekend. Recovering is going good. I hope I don't run out of the metalic blue!! Yikes. Fusalage and tail feathers are almost complete.

A few more flights in today, but it was a tad breezy...

Handles the wind really well. I hung it by its 23x8 Xoar for a few seconds too...not too long though mostly to see if it could.

I am one happy camper!!!

Larry is a good guy! I'd buy from him again in a heart beat!

'Cuda, you'll be happy! I'm getting more comfortable with every flight. She doesn't have any nasty tendencies that I can notice, other than my control inputs, lol! I've gotten three days of flying in a row in and look forward to burnin' more fuel! This one screams "take me to the field!"

Pics from today....notice the grass in the back ground...shortly after I left the field, a grass fire that started around the corner from us burnt it all from initial reports! The runway and table area are supposed to have survived, last I heard.

I am running a DA100L. The DL111 is more that enough for this model, you can be sure of that.

Check the thread on my signature if you wanna see the build process.

My JC Area-51 gen2's crank let go last night. Only a gallon and a half, just about. Waiting to hear back from Paragon on repair or replacement. I would hate to set the motor box up again for a DL as things are a bit different. Throttle servo tray would have to be moved, more holes in the cowl, etc., etc. Good thing it happened on the ground in the tail stand flippin the prop rather than in the air at 7000+ rpm!

As to how it flies...this thing is awesome!! I haven't been able to do too much as I was still breakin' in the JC, but it handles wind well (floats with a nice headwind), tracks super straight, control input light and response is immediate (IMAC). "Best flying plane I've seen" one of our club members said. "Too bad you got one, cuz I would have" another said jealously ribbing.

A couple of quirks tho. On-line non aircraft type specific manual isn't the best I've seen, but workable. Ya think you'd get a hard copy included with the model.

Second is the super thin balsa sheeting at the wingroot pocket. Way too fragile as you can poke through extremely easy. A ply would have been better there, imo. I might have to glass a bit there for my own piece of mind and fat numb fingers, lol!

Other than that it is a wicked plane! I'd buy another if the wife'd let me, lol!

Turns out I didn't have to wait! Found a used one with one flight, DLE55, JR servos, reciever, wing bags, bind and fly.

Picked it up on Friday, spent the morning Sunday getting the radio programmed and the motor how I like it and the weather immediately turned to crap so I didn't get to fly it yet. I'm chomping at the bit to get it in the air.

Unfortunately I looked at a few images of the full scale and realized that the Thunderbolt graphics were enlarged from a bad image and look like hell. That will be my project this week, getting better looking graphics made for it.

Other than that, what a nice plane, good hardware, and just SWEET looking!

Before and after. I've only got the wing done this morning, working on the fuselage later, that one is going to be a little trickier since they cut out the orange and over laid it on the white instead of sticking white letters on top that I could peel off like the rest of them.

Lycoming was nice enough to have the logo's in EPS on thier media web site
