OMP/EG Aircraft 30% Yak SP-55M build

My radio installation. Placement of the battery is based on wishful thinking. A preliminary CG check will determine the final location. The only work left is to cut the cowl!

Be sure to check the blind nuts on the wings on your Yak. One of mine (right wing if viewed from behind) is defective and the nylon bolts just skips the threads right as it begins to tighten. The blind nut on the other wing is fine. I guess I have to knock it out. Otherwise, looks good in one piece!

Looks good Sess. I am not sure that I would leave the pull-pull cable rubbing. That is strange about the blind nut. Are the threads shallow?

Yes the threads are shallow on the one wing blind nut. I will try to knock it out and replace it. The cable rub is very slight and I think it should be fine for now, worst case I can use the secondary holes in the rudder control horns. I think I am going to go with the stock DLE muffler. The Pitts will require mutilating the cowl, and the canister is heavy. I will shape the muffler downpipe to conform to the cowl to make it neat. Stock muffler weight is a mere 3.5 ounces. That is nearly 5 ounces lighter than the Pitts I bought and about 10 ounces lighter than a canister.
devens: Are you going to baffle your cowl? I am also going to open up the bottom of the scoop, but going by the 2 or 3 to 1 exit to intake area, there is no way that is enough, right?

I'm beginning to think my plane/motor combo is cursed. Maybe the deal was too good? I got the nose and exhaust all done and noticed that the prop wouldn't turn. It felt like the piston was hitting something. I took the head off of the brand new DLE 55 to find that one of the wrist pin clips wasn't there. The wrist pin had slid out and caught onto one of the intake runners. I was hoping to fly her this weekend. Jody at Valley View is sending me a new clip tomorrow free of charge (great people) so maybe it will happen.
Oh, and by the way I found that it is actually the nylon bolts that are defective. I found another normal nylon laying around and noted that the included ones seemed thinner. That and the threads were not molded correctly. So check those bolts. I will replace mine. Here is my setup so far. Looks pretty clean to me. The plug boot is off since I need to take the head off of the motor when my clips get here. [:@]

For a baffle I am going to use a sheet of lexan, with an opening cut out just like the QuiQue cowls used to have. I can paint it from the back so it will be shiny. I will have to rethink the choke though.

The lexan is a good idea Sess. Sry to hear about the motor probs. I would make sure that clip isn't in the motor somewhere. Cowl looks good. You will have to cut the plug opening larger to make room for the boot.

RE: OMP/EG Aircraft 30% Yak SP-55M build
Thanks. The boot fits just fine in that opening. I have it pointing away from the motor and running over the muffler. I have done my best to make sure it isn't in there. They are in there with a lot of tension. I can think of no way for it to pop out, so I assume it was never there.

I used 1/16" balsa to make the baffling on my 50cc OMP Yak. I've done this before and it is plenty strong enough. Covered the front with black monokote and glued to the fiberglass perimeter with a bead of thick CA. Used some additional balsa to form inlet guides right to the cylinder. Should work very well.

Nice work. Did you fuel proof the back side?
I'm hoping that my clip gets to me today so I can maiden mine tomorrow. I figure I will leave the cowl off for the first few flights anyway, so I only have to c.g. mine.

There must be a slight difference in the DLE -vs- the DA. I had to make my opening larger to avoid rubbing the plug boot.

I think that they are the same, I just have mine rotated 90 degrees from where yours is. Because of the angle of the plug, the boot points away from the cowl instead of parallel with it.
If my wrist pin clip comes tomorrow morning we might have a maiden; if not no big deal. I did just get in on one of those new JR 9503's today. Groovy.

I have been eyeballing the 9503 also. I have a 9303 with a modual. Are you going to get a vid of the maiden?

Well I did a weigh-in on my digital bathroom scale. The result? 15.0 pounds! [X(] However, I will take into account that the scale, made to weight people, may not be incredibly accurate on items under 20 pounds.

You bet! Although they say to absolutely not do any sort of 3D action with a brand new motor. Hope you like rolls and loops.

Bryant330L, do you run B&E Graphics? If so, I was eyeing up your 50cc decal set for the Yak, but I only want the OMP and Yak 55M decals. I can't customize it on the website...

Got my replacement wrist pin clip! Thank you Valley View! This is good news since the weekend is looking decent. Here is a before and after. Again, brand new DLE 55. An isolated incident I hope.
