Extreme Flight 78" Extra
Got the Extreme Flight 78" Extra 300 enroute.
IMAA legal (true 25% size)
Going to retire my 74" Yak thats flys like a bandit but I felt it was time for something new.
Power is going to a Brilelli 46 w/ Vess 20B
Hitec Servos (forget which, and they are in the Yak in my trailer) with A123 packs on the ignition and receiver.
JR x9303 and JR 921 for guidance.

Pictures to follow.

I've had my eye on that airplane as well. Would be a perfect replacement for my old 26% Miles Reed Extra 260 should I run into any dirt with it. ALthough I've been lucky for about 30 years now so it could be awhile

that 46 will pull it around something Fierce!!

I'll also say this about the Extreme Flight gang, Chris Hinson was at our event last weekend and he basically told me to come up to the shop, he'd personally help me put the plane together in his work shop and we could test fly it before I took it home. While I can't avail myself of the offer, thats what I'm talking about for service/support.

Great, they have the glow version available now. Let us know what total weight you end up with. I too will probably transfer the gear from my 74" Yak to one of these if it looks like I can keep it under 12.5 lbs with an YS170 for power. This will probably be my next project after I finish my current one (Aeroworks 35cc Extra 260 with a DA50 at about 14 lbs.).

Here's some pictures. Sitting down with the manual now. Off tomorrow so I'm going to field strip the Yak.
The ailerons on this thing are huge I like the way they attach the canopy on this one better than my Yak. Cowl looks substantial without being overly heavy and the paint is a great match to the covering. Nice pipe tunnel. Parts are very light and the covering job is above average. Nice details like rubber tubing over the tabs on the stab halves so they dont gouge anything and wing and stab bags (not fancy but serviceable ones) are included, as is a canopy cover which will come in handy here in the Florida sun.
I can't wait to get started on it and if the weather forecast is correct, I'll have plenty of time tomorrow and Saturday to get started.

How substantial is the landing gear mounting?
On the 74" Yak, I felt it could be improved so I pulled the covering and added some support doublers. Also, I found that the cap screws on the landing gear brackets were not tight, so I took care of that also. My modifications proved to be useful because I landed once in the weeds, which stressed the landing gear significantly, but without damage to the fuselage. I did have to rebuild the top of the rudder though because it flipped over.

My Yak was weak in that area too, but build light for performance versus build for crashes....... this one is built light.
We'll see what happens there, hopefully I won't pancake it!
I switched to a Venom 45 with a Pitts muffler from Southeast RC Engines. The Brillelli rail mounts and the Venom mounts like most other gas engines. Truth be told it idles like a jack hammer so I'm hoping the Venom will be smoother as well.
We did uncover one boo boo. The instructions state to mount the elevator servos with the spline to the rear but when we did that the push rods were too long. Thought that either the wrong turnbuckle rods were supplied or the book was wrong. Turns out the book was wrong.
Taking a moment to mention the turnbuckle rods, these are a very nice touch. Fine adjustments can be made with a small wrench versus pulling the ball link off the servo or control horn to make adjustments. 3 cheers for EF for that one!

RE: Extreme Flight 78
My friend was thinking about getting the Extreme Flight 78" Extra 300 ARF airplane (the blue version though), and he wants to put a DLE 55cc gas engine on it. will this be too much? And for all of you who have built this airplane, how much does it weigh when you are all done building it? the manual said that it should weigh between 11 and 13 pounds i think. What did it weigh for you?
*If he does get this airplane, this will be his first gasser and he was looking to me to help him out since i have experience with gassers now. So i just want to make sure everything works out for him.
thank you everybody in advance!

Dude, thats a LOT of motor for this plane. I put a Venom 46 on it which promply blew up on the maiden flight and what little I saw of it, it had more than enough power even being broken in (broken being the key word )
You get to a point where the weight isn't worth the power.
Guys are flying this on a 30cc Syssa.
My DLE55 has a ton of power on my 15lb 88" SBach, I just couldn't picture it on this plane.

Hi all I too have a 74 yak and love the look of the Extra, was thinking of going petrol, I dont think a YS 160 will be enough ?
Any thoughts on which petrol engine will best ? or will the 160 be amble it throws the YAK vertical with no problems.
thanks Keith

RE: Extreme Flight 78
I spoke to Chris at the Toledo show and asked about that combo.
He thought it would perform really well.
I had one but decided to sell it for a FPE 2.4 just simply to go all gas.

Here's the finished product. I have 3 flights on it so I don't have a lot to report on its flying quite yet. I need to play around with the thrust lines and double check wing to stab incidence. It harriers well and hovers well (even though it feels a bit nose heavy), wing rock in harriers is minimal, more than my SBach but less than any Yak I've flown.
I got shut down for the weekend on Saturday when I found out that the Sullivan gas conversion stopper doen't hold up to gas. The stopper split and soaked the foam fuel tank mounting with gas. Use the Dubro brown stopper. Also note that the included tank stopper is for nitro, NOT gas.
The Venom 45 doesn't have a lot of time on it but its making good power and doesn't shake the airplane to pieces at idle like the Brillelli did on my Yak.
