A new job and house has taken over almost all my free time (well at least my building time!) I hope to start before too long, but currently am finishing off some other part-finished projects rather than start on a new "BIG" build. I am sorting out a Cessna 337 with 2 x saito 90 twin motors and a 1/4 scale DH 60 Gypsy Moth currently.

Glad to see someone is still here. I'm in the middle of a relocation move so mine is still on hold. Hope to have a shop setup in the spring. This thread has such a wealth of info about this model. It's invaluable. I wish the forum had a way to print a thread with pics as a PDF file. I'm so affraid the then I finaly get mine going this thread or all the pics won't be available.

Hi All,
My project is also stopped currently. This is due to vastly increased work commitments (now responsible for 3 times as much as before) but same pay! Hope to get started one day. Like Joel I worry the thread might disappear with all the info it contains. Anyone been flying their T-50 over the summer?

I am still in. I do have my 2 DLE-20s and am running one on my L-4, and plan to run the second one in on it too before putting them on the T-50. It is in paint with no markings and I need to complete my clear plastic installs and it would be about ready except for rigging. Like most everyone here I have been side tracked with other RC and non-RC projects. If anyone makes any progress please post us some photos. Maybe that will help get us all moving again.

I'm still here! Flew my songbird last summer...flew great! I have a youtube video on the landing only. Didn't really intend to take off, just do a highspeed taxi. The tail started flying, she was tracking down the centerline...so up she went! The guy taking the video wasn't ready! I don't know how to insert a link to the video but if you go to youtube and search on "The first Flight of the Songbird" it's right there!

Great job!
I think this is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL68ANTy208
How much does she weight, and what are you running for powerplants. I know I could read back in the threads, but I am lazy that way

Yes, that's the link...and by the way, I didn't miss the runway. I went for the grass because it's softer and I didn't know how it was going to land.
It weighs 32 lbs and powered by two Zenoah G-26 running 18/6 props. Mot overpowered but certainly plenty of power.

Great to see your plane flying Murphey. I have two Saito 115 four strokes that I was intending to use for mine. Then I was tempted by electric security (one motor won't cut). BUT... I have one Saito 170 radial and if I had a second one that would sound real nice.................. wouldn't it?
Trouble is I have to build it first!

Well, I now have 2 Saito 170 radials so I know what I am going to put in my T-50! I do still need to build the model though. I hope to make a proper start next year. It's now the building season again. Anyone else starting their T-50 or near to finishing? .

Hi there,
Thought I would post something to see if anyone is still watching the thread. I saw a report of a new Bobcat built by Tim Cardin. Here is a link to the video of the maiden flight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkxoEoZ84f0
What surprises me is that it is powered by 2 Saito 120-R3 radials . These glow engines only put out 1.4bhp each (less that a standard .91 four stroke engine) but the models seems to fly pretty well on that amount of power. Sounds great too. I was going to put 2 saito 170 radials in my model, but this rather changes my thinking. Any of you who have built and flown models got any thoughts about this?

Still here David...just slow to respond. Tim Cardin's Songbird looks great...flies just like mine did...
Are you still in the UK or back in France? Going to la Poet Selard (near Leon) next summer to visit family...wonderful place!
Keep us up to speed on your T-50 progress.

.I saw Tim Cardin fly his this year at TopGun...very nice guy by the way.He told me that there is enough power to fly, but not really enough to get out of trouble with. I will also say that the T-50 does NOT like cross winds. There was a cross wind blowing to our faces from the right which is the worse way for a tail dragger. He has full right rudder and it would still weathervane into the wind. His plane looked awesome, as evidenced by his runner up finish for Pilot's Choice. The only negative about those radials were that once in the air, you could not tell they were radials at all. You could just tell that there were multi cylinder at all since they are so quiet. Sounded like a multi engine plane with the single cylinder 4 strokes a tad out of sync.BEAUTIFUL plane though. He flew it well too.

Jeff,
Thanks for the info on Tim's plane. I don't suppose you know what the all-up-weight was on his T-50? I have read an article about a French designed T-50 to the same scale and the designer/pilot also reported issues in holding the model straight in a crosswind. It set me thinking about a gyro connected to the throttles to adjust the thrust to keep the model straight. But... you risk having less than full power on take-off! Perhaps a gyro on rudder could help because it would be very fast to respond to any initial yaw and thus perhaps help limit the swing.
Murphy,
Good to know you are still there. I'll be over in France (near Nimes in the Gard department ) from 17 July to 10 Aug this summer.

Good Morning Everyone,
Well, yesterday I lucked into purchasing a Don Smith T-50. We managed to find sheets 2 and 4 of the plans, The others were probably there somewhere, but after a few hours of going through stuff, never located the rest.
So I am in need of some help. Anyone with full plans willing to sell them, I'll take them. And also information on setting CG. It does have the retracts in it. So did you balance with gear up or down and what is the CG recommended spot. I have read the entire thread, and see where someone mentioned 5 3/4" give or take.
Its not not in perfect shape, so I need to do some things on hinge points and such. I will be changing the entire color scheme as well. As soon as I can get some good pictures I will post up.
Thanks for for any and all help on this,
John
