Yeah,I know what you mean. I'm scared of Hobby King too. There's a couple videos
on you tube showing the engine running. They sound pretty good. I've heard those dle 20's
run and they sound too much like a glow to suit me. A nice cub needs a four stroke.

The Saito Twin Gas FS sounds great but they are pricey.

Ron,
Go on  youtube and key in balsa usa 1/3 scale cub. There's a guy on there
that goes by Bell Boy Bob that has a couple 1/3 scale super cubs with zenoah g 45's
on them. They seem to fly them just about right.

RL, found the video. It did pull it around nicely. The smallest I will probably go is around 50cc. The DLE 55 would be a good low cost option. I recently put a DLE 30 on my 1/4 Cub. I have been pleased with it.

mrwad,
I checked it out on youtube, sounded pretty sweet, I like my cubs to fly scale. The spec sheet on this engine
says 5 hp swinging a 20 to 22 inch prop. This sounds like it would haul it around pretty scale to me. Depends on the quality of
the xyz engine. I've got a balsa usa 1/3 scale cub that I'm thinking about a zenoah g45. You hear guys say oh I want more power
in case I get into trouble. I never really put alot of stock in that one.

Define "fly scale" Full size super cubs have all kind of power plants bolted to the firewalls. some take off in a couple of yards (land likewise)... My Balsa USA 1/4 scale cub has a Quadra 42... Overpowered? Maybe. Fun? Yes!
I have seen a bunch of 1/3 scale cubs (Busa) and the Z62 is the leat I would use. Maybe a Z80 twin... Not less.

Overpowering a super cub exists only in your mind...

No such a thing, same as the Easter bunny, Harry Potter, and other children stories. It is a fantasy, fiction, the creation of a fertile mind:-)

Is this overpowered? Of course not! In order to fly scale like (like in the video) you need some power under that hood... See video:

Ron,

Be sure to check out the measurements on your plans. I had wing spars on one wing that were 1/8 " off from each other. The spars lengths from one wing to the other were also off. It is almost a given that when you have two sheets to build your wings from that they may have slight differences, but not on the same sheet. Also be careful when building the top center section, be sure the plans are square. My left side was "ahead" of the right side by almost 3/16". The plans were badly skewed.

I have sold my Cub but I had planed on using a DA-85, at 3700 feet I don't think it would have been overpowered.

Good luck, the end result will be worth it!

Here are a couple of pics of mine its a scale scheme of a plane up in Canada... really fun with the flaps, it has a D&B 5.1 (83cc twin) for power and it needed the nose weight.

I also have a set of floats for it that are really nice EDO floats also painted in the scale scheme but I haven't tried them yet.

Tons of power on this one with the twin..

Wing tip pinned down and joints glued.
This is my first project to use Gorilla glue. It is alot easier to sand than CA. And it drys faster than I thought it would. It works well for laminating. And Its a heck of alot cheaper than CA. I usually have glued a couple fingers together by this point on other builds.
That variety of Gorilla glue is good stuff. Does dry a bit quick but hold really nice, and you won't tear a part to pieces if you mess up and have to remove it. The stuff in the smaller bottle that requires some dampening, I'll not use it again. Not worth cleaning up the foam and it soaked so hard actually warped a couple parts with it. Yeah you got the good stuff.. haven't used CA since I starting using it..

That's a nice lookin' cub you got there. Maby " fly scale' was not the proper word to use.  You were right
about full size cubs having all kinds of power plants bolted to the firewall. Your 1/4 scale with the  quardra 42
and my sig 1/4 scale with the magnum 91 shows that you can do the same thing with models. It's fun to fly too.
Some like em' with a lot of power  some don't.

RV9, I have read in a couple other threads that the Plans are off. I was thinking That I would build both wings and then go ahead and build the Cabintop and join it all up before building the fuse. Did you modify yours with wing tubes?

Yes I'm not home right now but I can post close ups of anything you like. Mine is covered in solartex and painted with PPG. It also has the scale pinking tape and everything. I didn't build it my very good friend built it and needed room in the garage so I volunteered to take it off his hands. Lucky me!

Built the wing strut attachments tonight. Two of the required parts were not the size listed in the instruction book. This is where having all your wood sorted and measured really helps. Rather than dig through that giant box of wood for two hours again, I knew that the only parts that could be the doublers and spruce blocks were simply the wrong size. My new sander made quick work of correcting the problem.
Its close to Christmas and my wife ask me why I didnt ask for the Sander for Christmas to which I replied " I needed it before Christmas " I should have let her buy it. My second shop light quit working so I told her she could buy me a shop light for Christmas. Usually for a Christmas list I just give her part numbers. She's very good to me!

Like I have said before, the disc sander is the most used tool in my shop. Second is my drill press.
Good to see some parts being put together!

Wing tubes arrived tonight. I was surprised when the UPS man rang the door bell at 8 pm "what can Brown do for you?"
The five smaller tubes are conduit for servo wires and LED lights.
The Tubes were shipped from Nick Zirolis shop in New York. After waiting two weeks for them I was reading the imprint stamped on the Aluminium. It reads " Kaiser seamless Aluminium, Chandler Arizona" I live in Chandler AZ. Probably could have driven ten minutes and bought it.

Sounds good. I'm off all week, burning some vacation time before the end of the year. Whenever you are ready let me know. Do you know the size of the outer socket? We may need a specific bit to drill that. I'm thinking a forsner bit may work with balsa. I'll have to try some tomorrow and see what it does. If not we could do it with my spindle sander and a template. Balsa gets a little cranky around drills.

Kaiser Aluminum, they are at Arizona Ave and Chandler, not even 10 minutes.
The wing tubes for my 1/5th scale Sig Cub are also marked Chandler. No company name though.
Weird!
Phil
