GP Fabric covered Cub 1/5 scale question
I have a Great Planes Fabric Covered Cub and one of it weak points is its landing gear..I have pretty much worn out the one that came with it .I was kinda tough on it when learning how to fly the plane..I have a handle on it now... I have been thinking about replacing it with the Robart Product # 629 and wondered if anybody else has done this and how it has worked out..It is a fair investment but I really like the plane so if it works well and stands up I dont mind the output...Any thoughts on this?? Biker,
I never have really been a fan of the high dollar scale landing gear. It looks good up close when you are starting it up on the bench.
But when you taxie out about 30ft. it's hard to see it working. I've been flying cubs for nearly 30 years all with the gear they came with.
I just can't pull the trigger on that kinda stuff. A lot of guys love it though. If it was me I would put another hundred with it and get
a new plane.

Although he didn't mention competing with the plane, it's interesting to note that static judging is done at 15 feet or so. Obviously, cost is an issue no matter what. It's really up to the pilot and what he is trying to accomplish.

One of the reasons I asked for input on this was because of the cost. ..I am trying to decide if it is worth it to me to do this..It is a large investment on a plane of this value to me to do this..I do however really like the plane..So what I want to know is how well this gear works and how well it stands up..If it is somthing that I could keep and move from plane to plane then maybe its worth it...I have two 1/3 Cubs but dont fly them as often because they arent as easy to transport or set up, so I fly my GP 1/5 scale more and the gear is an issue that needs to be addressed this winter...The Gear on my 1/3 Cubs looks like the Robart #689 gear and it works great...If it works as well and stands up as well as that then I think it would be worth it to me...

Sounds like you really like the plane. You could move it from plane to plane as long as it didn't
get torn up in a crash. Canada is pretty close to the north pole. That would make it alot easier
on Santa Clause too. That area is one of the first stops on his route.

Robart gears for the most part are well made and quite robust and should stand up to the stress and strain you will put on them, but as already suggested stuff like this is mostly a matter of personal choice. So if your pocket book can manage the $ shock, take the plunge and enjoy having them on your model, but if on the other hand you are like the majority of us who have rather limited hobby funds to spread around, repair the stock gear as best you can or replace it with a new DIY wire gear and be happy.

You might also peek at the landing gear for the Airborne Models (World Models) 1/5 scale J-3 Cub.

[link=http://www.cublandinggear.com/Home_Page.php]Cub Landing Gear[/link] (formerly Wallace), makes a nice set of Cub gear that looks as good as Robarts and a bit less. I'm getting a set for a Sig 1/5 Cub I'm about to start working on.
