Default 1/4 scale Yak11 Prep, Paint and Weather

I recently recieved an assembled Fibre Classic's Yak 11 that had previously been painted and then stripped.

The condition of the model was far from a perfect 'Blank Canvas' so before starting the painting process i had to remove and rub down the composite surface to accept paint.

I had to use 400 grit abrasive pads on a Black and Decker Mouse to restore the model to a condition that was acceptable, i then went over the whole model with 'Green' scotchbrite to ensure the surface would accept paint.

Once prepped i gave the whole model a coat of 2k grey primer, this highlighted a lot of faults with the kit and also the stripping. All of these areas were filled with Dolphin glaze filler and sanded accordingly.

I then gave the model of gloss white which is not the best colour to cover a model as this coating highlight more area's of concern.

The model was put to one side while i waited for the new Moki 180 to arrive. The model had previously had a Moki 250 prefitted but we decided to change this to the smaller and lighter 180.

The photos that follow show the progress through the finishing process.

Excellent choice of subjects Philip and I look forward to your finished product. As a point of interest, if this is the 100" span Fiber Classics kit, then the scale is actually 1/3.7 rather than 1/5. The full scale Yak-11 is a very small aircraft! Good luck with it.

excellent job. I love to know how you did the oil streaks, type of paints used and the technique.

Cheers

Hi Philip,

Great job as always.
I would love it if you can publish a 5-step photo instruction on how to make good weathering on a jet, and what materials you use.

Thanks,
Ziv

A lot has been going on since the last post, been weathering the second wing, finishing off the fuse and the cowling, two ailerons have been weathered as well.

I will take a lot of photos this weekend as i hope to have her finished for Ali by Monday.

I’ve recently acquired one of these yaks. No manual. Where is your CG located?
