RE: Topflite Giant P-47D
I am going to be so nervous and scared the first flight with it, what is the flying characterists like? For instance what should I look out for on landing and takeoff? How does it fly?

How does it fly? Watch the video! Balanced at the rear of the recommend range, flown on the recommended lows rates, 70 degrees of flap with about 3/32nds down elevator mixed in with the flaps. Hold a lot of power on when the flaps are down til about 3 feet above the runway.
P-47's are VERY well mannered!

I was wondering, I'm in Canada, and our hobby shops are great hobbies, but it says for 599.00 can get the DA 50r but for 649.00 I can get the DA 60. But I am concerned if it is too big?? Any suggestions?

..can tell your 14, dont tell every one here you are good and show poeple how to fly etc. you are very green and have many years to get into the real experience of build and set up.
Dont let this detter you, much can be learned from the forums. You asked all the right questions so far, many may not be answered as fast as youd like, but the replies will come, take the time to set this up and have it checked over and over, You will end up with a 3000$ aircraft, dont toss it away with haste and ignorance.
The DA60 is not physically much bigger or heavier than their 50 and would be a good choice, and you can run a bigger prop, better for looks and power for sure.

If you install the DLE 55 rear exhaust engine you won't have to cut a slot in the side of the cowl for muffler clearance on the Top Flite P-47. The side exhaust engine won't fit inside the cowl without cutting out a 2" hole so the front of the can muffler will clear. I am using a Zoar WW2 style 22/10 prop with good results.

I know of people who have bolted in a DA85 in their and state that the plane still flies well. Personally, I feel anything in the 80cc class is an overkill but each to their own.
Remember, this is a 10.5Kg plane with all the gear in it and the wing is big. Once airborne, she is a big Pu**ycat to fly, both stable and predictable.
Only downside to bigger engines is the side torque on takeoff is somewhat more. I have a 3-blade 24x10 on mind and need to be on the rudder a bit on takeoff. The trick is to be gentle on the throttle and allow the tail to come up as you build up speed. Steer the plane straight down the runway with the rudder and you will have very impressive takeoffs. The plane lifts off (if you let it) at speeds well below any meaningful rudder response.
Regarding the flaps, - I have stuck with the throws as per the manual. I find that when I drop the flaps, there is hardly any pitching or need for down pressure on elevator. In fact, low rates on all controls as set out in the manual are quite good for the initial flights.
As long as you come in on final under a couple of clicks of power and gently flare when you are a foot or so above the deck, you can "let gravity do it's bit" and get the most beautiful wheel landings after you cut power to idle.

Check the video in post #26. I have a DLE 55 with the stock exhaust and did not have to cut the cowl. Rotate the engine to the 7 o'clock position and everything clears. Look at the front of the cowl at the start of the video and you can clearly see the cylinder position and the factory muffler. You do not have to buy an after-market muffler!

Hi Lifer,
This is perfect!
I bet the 55cc suits this plane very well. I obviously used what I had on the shelf for mine. I considered the 50cc as well but the plane was originally assembled for an air racing event where you were allowed up to 62cc so the 58 was my choice

Why so nervous then? And asking the basic of basic
Questions?
It's common knowledge that's an easy plane to fly for an intermediate pilot.

Are any of you running the Robart electric retracts? I just picked up a Tarheel Hal and am thinking of buying the Robart electric retracts since they have a good deal on them here for Christmas. Guy at the field told me Robarts bend. I know you can't make a blanket statement against all Robart retracts because one set failed someone long ago. Let me know your opinions thanks!
