Default Bill Hempel 40% Super Cub ARF

I am getting ready to put together one of Bill Hempels 40% Super Cubs.
I have seen this plane earlier this year and was impressed in it's size, and the way it flies. There is one of the J3 clipped wing Cubs at my field and it flies great.

My kit is on order and all the additional items I need to complete the kit.

I am going with the yellow color and will spruce it up with some vinyl graphics.
For the power plant I have a well broken in EME120 that has been the best engine I have ever had, got about 300 flights on it without as much as a hiccup.

I am going with front dump cans for mufflers, the 10" aluminumn 60% BH wheels.
Some of the things I will do will include navigation lights, and i will play with vinyl fasteners and stainless steel fasteners. Once I see the kit I will have a better idea of how I will detail it. Eventually I will strip the covering and do modifications and cover with a paintable covering.

This will be a relaxing fun flying beast.

I am doing a build log because there is limited info on the 40% super cub. There is a lot more info on the clipped wing but still lacking info.

I normally build an ARF in a single weekend but with weather and work I will take my time on this one.

here is the kit.

This is the look I am going for.

Good choice.
I'm putting one together. I stripped the covering because I'm going to recover in Stits fabric and paint. Also building a set of floats..76" long. Cub will be primarily a float plane.
I'm using a DLA128 4 cyl so I had to split the cowl and fabricate baffles to be able to cool the engine, hopefully, with no problems.

I only found a couple of slightly suspect glue joints in the whole structure. I went around with the zap on all joints for good measure.

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave, I will strip and cover with Stits after a season of flying. I will give the frame a good go over on the glue joints.

Kieth, I haven't started working on Angie. I am working out of town for the rest of the year so I can't build right now. I can build the cub at where I am staying.

Just got confirmation from Fedex fright that my cub has shipped.
Bill ships threw Fedex and the shipping cost is very reasonable but if you don't have a business address you will have to go pic it up so be prepared for that!

It is one of theses maybe in the back rows as it is a super cub

Default The unboxing

I went home yesterday to go get my plane and to attend our monthly club meeting, we are voting in the new officers for next year.

I picked up my trailer and headed to the Fedex fright location. When I got there the same guy that called me the day before helped me out.

I drove around back to the forklift ramp and got my trailer ready. Shortly after a young man came down and asked if I would help him carry the big box down as he did not want to use the forklift on it, good choice!

while we carreded it down he asked what it was. I told him it was a 40% RC plane. His eyes got big and he was very interested in it, and once he saw the other planes in my trailer he was all questions.

i was kind of in a hurry as I was running late to the club meeting, but I gave him the club info and answered as many questions as I could, might have a new member

the he next day I loaded all my stuff I will need for the build and headed to work, trailer in tow.

Today I setup my temp building room and started to unboxing my goodies after work.

this box is really big, 28" tall, 22" wide and 101" long, big

The cans are K&S from Chief Aircraft, really nice stuff here

More to come.

There are two boxs, outer and the inner that has the kit in it, makes me worried that it doesn't have Masonite backer to protect it.

First layer is is off and the inner box looks good.

This is kit is well packed, my guess is Bill packs the kits.

The he cowl looks good, nice and big.

The wing is very well put together, carbon fiber wing tubs.

One of of the improvements from the first BH Cubs is the servos are inside the wing instead of surface mounted.

There re are two servo bays to each control surface so a total of 4 per wing.
i was not aware of this as there is little information on this kit so I will have to order some more 3" links and deside what I want to use for servos, I have a bunch to chose from so we will see.
I also want to use the Power Box servo matche so I need 4 of those.

The he hinges are nice, pocket hinges and they are nice and tight, well done.

Check the fit of the big wing tube.
Mine was very tight in both wings, would only go in about half way. I lightly wet sanded the tube, but made most of the clearance in the cardboard tube. I took a length of wood dowel long enough to reach the end of the tube and made a saw blade slit in one end, and inserted a strip of 100 grit sandpaper. The tube seems to have shrunk where it is glued to the ribs.
Chuck that in a drill and slowly hone the inside of the tube. Stop the check tube fit every few seconds, using talcum or baby powder as a dry lubricant. The powder also acts as a mild abrasive.

It took about 10 mins. per wing to make a nice snug fit all the way to the end of the sleeve.

Cheers,
Dave.

Nice plane Tony.

I almost bought the Hempel L-4 this year but ended up with a 1/4 Balsa USA Cub kit.

Dave my wing tubes fit just fine without any sanding. This kit has improved as a lot of the design that I have seen in pics and forums are totally different on my kit, good improvments. I am very pleased with the quality of this kit. I have hade three Aeroworks planes and this plane is right up there, for the price you can't go wrong. TB

Today I am going to mount the engine and start working on the canister install. I am waiting on wire so I can install the servos but I want to locate where I am going to mount the smart fly. I'm starting to get into the rhythm. Need to go to HD for some supplies as there in no HS in Marble Falls. TB

I glued and bolted mine in. If you want it removeable, you'll have to make one elevator removeable.

I will glue it in and bolt it too, I see no need to ever take it off.
