It looks like the kit (clipped or super) has evolved over the years. Rolls are always I thrill with a cub. I still have the option of making the flaps ailerons so we will see how it fliys. Maiden........... When it's ready and the weather is better. Sometime next year. I haven't flown in a long time so I need to get some stick time before I fly the cub. I hope to bring it to the field for some field run up and tweaking, not sur I will fly her till I get some rust off. Will most likely be at the south field.

Yes, this is my job site in Horseshoe Bay for the past couple months and for the next couple months. It is a good hour from my place in Austin, I stay there during the remodel so flying is a good 1-1/2 each way.

Not much going on till the weekend. I need to do the cowl baffle and that should finish the fuselage off, still need to do the detailing.

I desided to change the way I have the wing servos setup. Currently I have the flaps setup as flaps only. I have them on a 1-1/2" servo arm and centered in the half flap position. I will change to the same 2" servo arms as the ailerons. Go to a 4 servo wing setup and set the flaps as ailerons. Then try and figure how I can do a mix so when I switch to flaps (down) they are flaps. Then when I put flaps up they are now ailerons. Should help in those rolling circles

Realistically this plane won't be ready to maiden till late January with work and all puls I still need to setup my trailer.

So I have been wracking my brain trying to get a mix for my flaps to act as ailerons when not deployed. So I sent Futaba support a note and then was told to call to do a setup of the flaps mix. I called Mike at Futaba and he helped me do the mix.

You need to setup 4 mixes for this to work.

In the initial model setup I chose 2 ailerons and 2 flaps, plus 2 elevator.

Then to the function page to set the control on ch 6 to Aileron 2 to J1 and trim to T1.

Then we go to model menu and chose program mix 1.

The next mix is basicley the same but with ail2 and flap 2

Now it gets tricky.

Mix 3 is a bit different.

Mix 4 is basicley the same as 3 but flap2

Axis Y is set to -50, this is how you set how far your flaps go down. 50 is just a starting point. If you need to revers a servo on the flaps you just go + on Y on the flap that needs reversing.

With this setup it is on a 3 position switch. Up is ailerons all around (flaps too). Middle position is just the outboard ailerons and no flaps. Down is flaps. I can't have two position flaps this way but that ok because I don't use them like that anyways.

Here are some shots of the servo screens.

this is with the switch in the mid position.

Flaps down.

Ailerons and flaps linked to the ailerons.

I haven't tested on the plane but I will do that next time I put the wings on.

Getting a little time in on the cub. The baffle is the last major item to construct. I like to use the carbon fiber gloss laminets from ACP.
i am glade to see that ACP is now shipping there laminets with a protective paper covering that peals off. This is great because you don't have to put blue tape on it anymore for marking.

I first cut a cardboard templet for fitting.

This should force most if not all the inlet air threw the cylinder heads.
I first tack it with CA and then epoxy with hard wood blocks.
I will hit this with finishing reason and some cloth.

Tony,
The super cub and the L4 both fly great. We built them both with one servo per aileron and one servo per flap and have had zero problems with this setup. Keep in mind we built these just to get out and poke around the sky with some relaxing and lazy flying, not high speed 3D stuff. They fly really light for a model this size and very predictable, stalls with just the nose dropping.
Just like most Cubs you need a fair amount of differential and when leading with the rudder in the turns you will need to feed in good amount of opposite aileron.
For the CG I wound up right where the front strut mounts to the wing but anything from the wing tube to there will be ok to start.
Hacker Q80-6L in the super and I went the economical route, Rimfire 65cc in the L4, both with 26x10 props. We will be out at the AZ electric fest this weekend with both planes and will try to shoot some vids. Love the scale touches on your cub by the way, looks great.

Thanks Mike. I have seen the J3 clipped fly and do all the tricks, I too will be flying as a cub and not getting to crazy, but I did set it up so I can cut loos from time to time.

Looking forward to the video.

One thing about someone's flying video it only shows how someone else can fly it. Set it up right and balance it right and go fly it is the best way to learn how it flies, like all cubs be ready to use the rudder or you can lose it, Don't hammer the throttle on take off or you could end up picking up the pieces from the torque roll tip stall and you won't save it.

Leroy I have learned the hard way, my first AW 1/4 scale sports cub with a DLE55 in it tourqe roll on a aborted touch and go on my third flight, I punched it and it was a total loss so I know all about how to take off and land a cub. On my second AW cub I had a OS 40cc four stroke gasser in it and I started off taking off from grass as this helps it track better as I tearned how to manage it. Being I have been flying giant scale 3D planes for a few years now I got some good ruder skills that helped me to do flat turns. I have always said that Cubs are one of the harder planes to fly (scale) most just yank and bank, but I will be taking this cub threw its paces slowley and I will start on grass before I go to pavement.

Well it's time to get this bird ready to fly. So I went over the fuselage and finished anything that was not done, inspected all componets for lock nuts and Loctite.

I started to do the detailing, stitching and surface detailing.

I applied the the stitching on the underside to see how it looked, I'm not going total scale, just sports scale.
I am only covering the ribs.

Not bad, so I went forward and finished the tail feathers.

The wing us getting some fun too

.

Still a little more to do, but this is a start.

Ok so with spring right around the corner (freezing rain right now) I need to get my cub flight ready so I can do the maiden soon. I have my first event of the year in March.

So I will go over the plane and finish any detailing I need to or can do.

If I get a nice day next week I will fire up the engine to make sure all is well, then the first decent weekend I will do the maiden.

I came up with a simple way to balance this monster.

In the manual for the 50% it says the CG range is pretty wide, from 8" to 10" from the LE. There is no manual for the 40% so I would think that the CG would be 6" to 8" and as far back as 10" for more tail heavy flight.

The wing bolt forward hols are at 8" so I cut a dowl out of 1/4" aluminum and this is my balance point. I just use a cople straps to lift the plane. At the field I can hoist it up and get a better look but so far I am neutral at 8".

I always use a CG calculator to figure and check the CG

The calculations show my CG at 7.98 at 30%

At 25% the CG shows 6.63 but this seams a little forward for a plane this big.
Most just balance with the wings off lifting at the main spar tube set at 7"
i did this and was level.

So for now I will leave it as it is and add as much weight as I can to the front for the maiden as Bill says this plane flies best a little noes heavy.

Final set up is complete short of fine tuning my radio.

she is ready for a field test, but not ready to fly as I need some stick time first.

I still need to install the wing tip nav lights but I can do that as soon as my leans cover come from CV.

Next I will setup my trailer and make it ready for the field, now if the sun would just come out

You can bet you will have a crowd here waiting when you geter in the air, that's a big plane, makes a 1/4 look like a 40 along side of it I bet. "Get something to warm up with" and then get that cub in the air, I think you'll do just fine.

Thanks Leroy, it has been four or five months since I have flown. This is the longest break sinc I started flying 4 years ago so I just need to get some stick time on my pawnee before I go at the cub, most of the rust is procedure not the flying.

Weather is still nasty and not getting better.
